What a brilliant walk through, so much I don't understand about big engines like these streamliners, to look "under the hood" like this gives more meaning to the term "beast of burden". Great capture.
Love the paint livery - looks like it escaped from the circus. I'm guessing having a separate generator room between you and the engine helps reduce the noise and heat a bit.
G'day Adam, What I was meant to say that I saw a SSR ute on Geelong Rd I rolled up the side of it at a set of red lights, asked if it was you & as soon as I mentioned your RUclips channel the 2 guys laughed realising why I asked. SD40 with a Bulldog Front my second best loco's after Big George C501. Have a Happy New Year & see more of your video's in 2025. Cheers Louis Kats 👍
Hahaha gold!! Defs wasn't me. Glad you enjoy them, I'm trying to ramp things up a bit but it's very hard flying solo to get it all done and work. But I'll get there. Have a great new year too!
Despite their shitty desktop layout these were a good loco. good hooters too but were stuck under the damm nose. merry christmas adam and your family regards big man
Nice tour and great sounds Adam! One question...after starting and idling, is the turbo still gear driven or is it running on exhaust only? I've read that it is gear driven up to a certain notch? Cheers Gregg.
Hi mate, yes they are gear driven to notch 5 -, 6,7,8 are exhaust driven when the clutch disengages. Similar to a vortech supercharger that could then be powered by exhaust in the top end.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Thanks Adam! Didn't realise it was driven to such a high load... the gear assembly must be a great bit of engineering! Cheers Gregg.
Generator set, for passenger working, these engine were the lead locos for the Indian Pacific and Trans Australian daily services in the 1970s and 80s.
Originally held a generator for passenger cars lighting/climate control power. Was removed sometime in the 2000's I believe when they went to doing exclusively freight work. The radiators for the generator are still visible behind the main radiators though when looking from the outside
Listening to a 2-Stroke EMD's never gets old. Why the large empty space at the rear? Did this unit formally have a steam or head-end power generator for passenger service?
Yes they head head end power units in the rear.. The issue I see is a lack of weight across the rear axles and thus the CLP was bad for wheel slip prior to having Qtron installed but still they would loose adhesive effort and are still rated heavier than they truly are.. I wish I was in a position to change the rules. Haha.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER If memory serves me right when Santa Fe got a bunch of SDP40f's from Amtrak they put giant concrete blocks in place of the steam generators they removed to manage the weight issue when they put them into freight service.
Merry Christmas mate--keep those Nathans honking through Southern Cross :) The long driveshaft coming out the front of the engine, is that to drive the Aircompressors?
What's the chance of putting a set of chrome valve covers on that and degreasing the engine and painting it coral green (I believe that is the color designation by GM)?
Since this is a "P" version, should it have a Head End Power unit in the rear? I guess it would have gone in the empty area at the rear? Were they all removed even if its called a CLP?
What shame to see these great locos in this awful condition. The space behind the engine was for a gen set to use on passenger train working. The engine rooms were spotless in my day.
Nice mate We've got our CM/MC and Toc train going in there (on the other side). Always interesting to see, the other operators running around Appreciate the content mate
Definitely not clean and the oil stains are pretty visible unless your Stevie Wonder. Last EMD engine I did a “B” service on a few weeks ago was a lot cleaner than that despite being over 10 years old!

Hi Adam, great video many thanks for sharing, all the best for Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers Lee.
some pretty impressive oil leaks there, I guess the fire suppression system is good
Oil won’t ignite it’s totally infertile.
CLP9 has a nice prime mover. It's paint job is epic

This is the loco l want to see in the wild, nice work

Horns on the nose now! Thank God! Merry Xmas too mate! 💪
@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER if they aren't on the nose are you really driving a streamliner? excluding the b class of course.
Again wish the CL’s in SA also had the horns on the nose, very slack of gwa/1rail/aurizon
Merry Christmas Train Driver

Great video Aussie Train driver, keep up the good work, and merry Christmas, any news about the A class? Thanks
A class should be out before Feb 2025. I'm as eager as you!
Thanks

What is/was the purpose of the large empty space at the B end of the engine room? Excellent video BTW...!

Yes used to have a HEP unit on the CLP units for the IP/ghan and overland back in the day.
That's for the DCC speakers!

@Trains-With-Shane should have done similar here. I did hear they did that, Makes sense.
Merry Christmas mate--keep those Nathans honking through Southern Cross :) The long driveshaft coming out the front of the engine, is that to drive the Aircompressors?
Yeah mate, to drive the compressor, 2 side cylinders are low pressure, centre is high pressure, water cooled, wet sump compressor.
Omg, the numberboards use the Comic Sans font??
Yes.. It's a subject of debate haha

They were removed after AN lost them to privatization.

It is a shame, rhe list of reasons why that is, is longer than the loco itself. It is a shame really.
Appleton?
Yes! 👍

motor looks a bit dirty a lotter oil stains needs a clean badly :)
That's a clean engine... Some are barely Visible, defs needs some attention
