That is surprising, because he is always prepared. His university commencement speeches, for example, are works of art peppered with bon mots, plays on words, homophones, parallel structure, and more. For him to arrive without a prepared acceptance speech must mean either that he thought he was not going to win or thought that it would suggest an unseemly confidence that he WOULD win. To see Tim Minchin and Lin-Manuel Miranda on the same stage brings me great joy. Both are brilliant artists; educated, analytical thinkers; men loyal to the wives and children they love; and compassionate individuals who care about social justice. If you're not familiar with all that they have done, particularly Tim with autism support groups and Lin-Manuel with hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico, take a few minutes to read about their efforts.

Having seen Groundhog Day at the Old Vic in London, I'm not surprised at all at Tim getting this award! It was such a great seamless production, the songs were amazing and the combination of acting singing and (even some magic!) was amazing!!! Well done Time and cast :)
