    When first-person shooters were introduced in the early 90s, most of the studios making them were content with keeping their protagonists silent. They believed that doing so would allow players to step into their shoes with far greater ease, and that the worlds their shooters explored already had plenty to say in their place. Any additional dialogue would be novel - yet wholly unnecessary.
    But before these assumptions could become fact, a PC game from Texas-based developer 3D Realms entered the market, and proved that dialogue - if done well - had its place within the genre. This game was Duke Nukem 3D, a bawdy shooter that followed its titular protagonist on a quest to liberate Earth from an alien menace, and riveted a generation of players with its real-life settings, high level of interactivity, and one-liner spouting protagonist voiced by Jon St. John. While the Duke proved a figure of controversy due to some of his more salacious tendencies, most found that his added character greatly elevated the rest of the experience around him. And before long, gamers on almost every other platform under the sun were nodding in agreement alongside their own copies of it.
    In the wake of such widespread success, 3D Realms had every intention of building Duke Nukem out into a sprawling franchise, and producing sequel after sequel that would outdo its gun-toting opus. Before long, however, those in control of the series found themselves corrupted by their own success, and these plans began to veer off course. While there would be no shortage of Duke Nukem spin-offs that would pop up in the years following 3D’s release, a proper follow-up to the shooter would remain locked in development hell within 3D Realms’s offices for years after its announcement. What was once an immensely promising series became one of the video game industry’s longest-running jokes - and when 3D Realms finally managed to get its prodigal entry out the door, most who played it found that the joke was on them.
    This is the rise and fall of Duke Nukem.

    So basically, because Ol' Georgie was obsessed with making his precious Duke the best game ever, he ended up sinking his own pet project because he just couldn't accept the fact that technology marches on and it would have become dated regardless.

      It's pretty sad. This kind of development hubris and constant feature/engine-creep has been the death of more than one game. The exact same thing happened to Daikatana. I think fully 3D FPS development in the late 90's was a really rocky place to be, particularly around 1997. Duke Nukem 3D was in the right place at the right time, but DNF landed fully on the other side.

    I think the doc over-states the controversy of Duke 3D's more salacious content in the 90s. At the time, the level of violence in the Doom games was still a sticking point for those looking to make video games a scapegoat for real-world violence; comparatively, things like the strippers were just features that made the game more edgy and adult to most of the actual audience, and thus, more desirable. Today, of course, DNF comes off as the worst of all worlds: Off-color enough to offend, not ribald enough to be exciting compared to what's available on the Internet, too in-your-face to be ignored, and not in a good enough game to "surf the wave" on style.

    • @marekjurko4548
      @marekjurko4548 2 года назад +32

      I think it's more "offensive and controversial" now than then, that's why the doc puts so much emphasis on it. In 90's people seemed ok with chauvinist nature of the content, but worried it may be "pornographic" or "illicit". Now it seems we went the other way around.

But honestly, the thought of Duke coming to the real world and going HAM on the safe spacers would make for a great game. It just wouldn't sell well and nobody would have the balls to make a proper Duke game. It would be glorious though. Imagine Duke going to a Halo convention, beating up a master chief cosplayer and leaving with his GF. As much as I would fear seeing a new Duke game, Duke is the only one who could save us.

With multiple changes in game engines, and being development hell for so long, I that knew from the start that Duke Nukem Forever would most likely flop. However, I still bought the game on day one release knowing that it already looked dated and unpolished. I wanted to fulfill that nostalgia and hear more of the Duke's one liner banter. I really wish people stopped refering to Duke as "parody" (I'm also quilty of that . . . So sorry) because Duke Nukem is Pastiche of 80s American action movie culture.

    • @psyc8407

      Parodies aren’t necessarily criticisms, they’re “humorously exaggerated imitations”. Think about what Spaceballs is to Star Wars, poking fun at the genre whilst throwing it’s own spin on it. That’s what Duke Nukem is to every action hero from Terminator to Chuck Norris. It even pokes at the dark age of comic books a bit, with the gun touting action hero and frequently sexual content.

    • @Mecks089
      @Mecks089 2 года назад +9

      I agree on the surface of the content, but with the context it kinda was relevant to the story though, the whole deal with the aliens in DN3D is that they wanted Earth's women, not resources, not a world of slaves, not total elimination, but for reproduction purposes, kill off the male species, and use the female one.
      It's physically shown in both the Plutonium Pak expansion, and in DNF.
      So in a sense, it's the aliens that are the real misogynists, it it even applies to an alien species. -__-
      Point being that Duke was fighting to save women and save humanity along with the Earth, doesn't help that the women caught by them were already traumatized and abused into begging for death. In the console and some spin-off versions you could literally save the babes at a push of a button, don't know why the original game never had that feature.
      And the only time I can remember, where Duke had to purposely kill off women was in the Christmas Expansion: Nuclear Winter. Killing militarized female elves working for a brain washed Santa Claus - Yeah Nuclear Winter was pretty much held as the worst expansion for the series.

    I honestly loved the heck out of the Duke Nukem PS1 games , more so Land of the Babes then Time to Kill due to it's more structured plot and Zero Hour being my favourite of them all.
    I think people just give the PS1 games a bad rap because of the bad controls and acting which was pretty much most of the 3d console games of that era.

    With the resurgence of retro FPS games, Duke could make a comeback with a new old-school build engine game.

    10:19 This is BullShit, the one time GVMERS really fucked up. The "sexist" thing in Duke Nukem 3D was AMAZING for Duke Nukem, even back then! it gave the game and the protagonist much more personality and engagement, not to mention these activities were OPTIONAL, so even if YOU were all ultrasensitive and hateful about feminine sensuality (as the writer of this video - Alexander Kozina - clearly is), you could SKIP all that, because Duke Nukem 3D is a SHOOTER GAME. On top of that, this sensual content was actually VERY WELL RECEIVED by the PLAYERS and even MOST of the Press, this writer is very ignorant about how Reality on Duke Nukem 3D was. Shame on your writer(s) who tried to rewrite History to impose his impious particular morals, GVMERS. Not on Steve though, he narrates as great as always.

      Ironically society is more puritanical now then it was 20-30 years ago. What was edgy and cool in the 90's is now utter heresy in 2022.

    People always hate on the 64 version, ''it's censored' they say. It ain't censored when it comes to blood and gore. Im glad it was changed up the way they did it, a different experience. The missing music was a little underwhelming but I liked the ambience of the game. Much more immersive experience and the graphics were superior on the 64 . The guns were interesting variety as well. The plasma cannon was awesome compared with the freeze gun. And the original Duke 3d didn't have explosive shotgun shells.

    The amount of hard work and dedication they out into making Duke Nukem Forever shows you they're really passionate and they actually care about making thier games the best they can be. 3D REALMS was a good gaming company i can only imagine the amount of good games they'd make these days.

    This is one I have been waiting for. I always have and always will love Duke since the original. It was a little weird to me when it went first person, but then realized Duke was always meant to be an FPS.
    I don't care what anyone says. Duke Nukem Forever is an amazing game (if you're a Duke fan).

      As a Duke fan who saw it as a "parody of modern games and troupes" it's actually pretty damn good.
      Although I'm not sure if the questionable AAA gameplay mechanics thrown in were a joke to the industry or actual concious design choices.
      Choosing the former makes DNF the Scary Movie 1 of FPS's and choosing the latter makes it the Scary Movie 5 of FPS's.
      Regardless, The Doctor Who Cloned me is a baller DLC that turned a solid 6/10 game at worst to a 8/10 imo.

    Love how you guys pretended like we didn't like the sexualization in Duke 3D.
    We loved it, it fit Duke's archetype perfectly, and was exactly what teenagers playing those games enjoyed. Don't pretend like people didn't like it just because it isn't enjoyed in today's culture.

      @@GeneralTantzu True, it's just that sex appeal is broad and a bit more varied in its representation now because it turns out that body types, fashion and trends come and go and are subjective depending on the individual.
