The Fascinating History of Ukrainian Cinema - A Documentary

- Every nation has its own art. Some form of creativity fed by traditions, folklore, cultural and historical heritage, as well as social and ethnic characteristics. Korean cinema is different from Thai or Mexican cinema. We would never mistake Almodovar's work for that of Iñarritu or Wong Kar-Wai. Nevertheless, modern cinema is a train on the railroad of globalization, and Hollywood is its finest car. It destroys individuality for the sake of the mass consumer. That’s not meant to be an insult, it’s just the way the market works. And yet, this approach is failing. In recent years, films that were shot thousands of miles from the dream factory have been garnering more and more attention, even at the Oscars. Today, I’m going to tell you about the original cinema of my homeland. A cinematic tradition whose very right to exist was stripped away. Filmmaking that was drowned in censorship. Cinema that has resisted, and unfortunately continues to resist the whims of dictators. Today we’re going to be discussing films that were made in Ukraine.

What a ride this was, a couple of these films were actually a part of my film studies program in college. The editing, pacing, and writing of this documentary is absolutely incredible. This should be required watching for any and all lovers of cinema.
Damn man, can't believe this only has 1k views this deserves way more. I watched your videos on Scorsese, Guy Ritchie and Tarantino and they are so great. Maybe do a doc on Edgar Wright who made Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim, Baby Driver and more.
Amazing and insightful work as always, folks. Every time you guys upload, it's a "Stop what you're doing and watch" kind of situation.
This literally made me look up some of these films to watch. I'm excited!
This channel is the best film channel on YT! My watch list has just skyrocketed!
Plemya(The Tribe) is one of my all time favorites that it's the homescreen on my iphone. Glad you mentioned that.
cant wait to watch this. i worked with a Ukranian who showed me some old Ukranian cartoons. very interested to watch
Looking forward to watching this.
Thank you for your work!!!
Great video!
Excellent channel. I’m so happy that I came across your platform. Subscribed and will share. Aloha from Hawai’i 🌺
Masterpiece. As always.
Thank you for your important work!
i love this channel
Great video
Truly a great video. I believe one thing that will change will be the language of Ukrainian cinema, as it reflects our world today. Many of the films you feature include either Russian or "Russified Ukrainian". Even Zelensky's famous TV comedy series uses a very Russifed version of language which was commonly spoken in the central and Eastern parts of the country. However, after Putin's full invasion, Ukrainians are increasingly choosing to reject Russian words and idioms - speaking Ukrainian is part of the resistance struggle. You can bet future Ukrainian cinema will reflect this linguistic assertion.
So nobody is going to talk about the amazing Ukrainian funkadelic acid rock music in the background? Where is the damn playlist?!?

I really loved the narration on this. Different guy then the other ones but I really like it
Thanks so much for making this! Very well researched and eloquently edited, showcasing why film and art is so important culturally, politically. 10/10
Thank you very much! I´m very glad you liked it. This is surely the most personal work I´ve ever made.
Thank you very much for this amazing documentary, such underappreciated, wish you best of luck!
this is gonna be epic
This is pure gold. Thank you for the effort of making this video, much appreciated.
Wow simply amazing video!
Omg, what a great doc!!!! I loved it, it is quite hard to find docs about Ukrainian cinema in English. Thank you so so much for this, cried while watching it :') can you please share the titles of the songs you've used here?? Because, I can't find the right versions of it:((( Яка чудова музика, я просто в захваті!!
Amazing doc!
I love the thumb in PUTIN’S eye of choosing a clearly North American narrator! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yes!
Except If your name is Taras, and you just listened to how the narrator butchered that name 😫
@@DucatiKozak Well, nobody’s perfect. I’m listen to an audiobook right now where the narrator consistently mispronounces “gimbal,” but I just go with it, ya know?
There's a translational mistake at about 16:35 they say "показилися" - got mad, it's close to "показалися" - showed up.
Can someone PLEASE tell me the name of the song at the start and end?
"Три трембіти" by ВІА Калина at the beginning and "Озовися" by Назарій Яремчук at the end
It's a crime this doesn't cover cartoons, since it's also a form of cinema
This is fantastic.
40:54 Why do the closed captions depict the words “another example of the critical need for denazification”? I’m confused as that is not what you’ve said in the documentary
Do Czechoslovak cinema next pls❤
I'd love to know more about it, but probably there is someone much better than me from Czech Republic or Slovakia to do such a beautiful work.
Why is there a skipping between 16:14 to 16:22?
Right-holders doesn’t allow me to use speech about peace from that movie.
Wow! Thank you from Israel,
😮⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Of course this is trendy now.
It is interesting that the clip for The Cranes are Flying was removed from this documentary due to copyright. That movie is the property of Russia's Mosfilm studios - and even though the entire movie is free here on youtube, it seems the Russian film company did not want to be included in this video on the virtues of Ukrainian cinema.
It is very notable that most of the Mosfilm catalogue was suddenly placed free on youtube at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In addition, this isn't just an ordinary clip; it features one of the greatest pacifist monologues in cinema history, comparable to Charlie Chaplin's iconic speech in 'The Dictator.’
@@OkoloKino That is interesting. Let me make two more points. One, your documentary mentions the "Marvel hero" style of war movie now coming out of Russia. Recently I analyzed the style of recent war movies - and especially since 2017 they have produced at least 18 WW II features emphasizing action and showing heroic Red Army soldiers and pilots destroying the German invaders. (Of course earlier films such as 2012"s Stalingrad also did this). All these films emphasized "the threat from the West" and Russia's heroic duty to triumph - totally consistent with Putin's world view. More reflective and personal films about the cost of war, which were part of Soviet and Russian cinema in the past, have been absent.
Second, as the son of Ukrainians born in the West, I feel an emotional need to reject Russian culture, which is awkward. Directed by Ukrainian Bodnarchuk, War and Peace is an amazing film. At this point in history I am especially struck by Prince Andrei's cold speech on the night before the Battle of Borodino when he says he would simply kill every French invader who has invaded and destroyed his homeland. (This is clearly how many Ukrainians feel about the Russians right now). However, despite the film's humanism, it embraces "being Russian" which is troubling for Ukrainians whose nation and families are under attack.
Thank you for your excellent video - I am finding some of the films discussed on youtube. Slava Ukrainii.
Yes, I've come across some profound analyses of propaganda in their recent films. They've been cultivating animosity towards Western civilization for years. The conversation has shifted from the war with Germany to a generalized 'war with the West.' The narrative now downplays World War II, focusing instead on their own version of the Great War, marked by different dates and key historical moments. In many ways, it seems as if nothing has changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Progressive society was duped for years, led to believe in the democratic values of the country. Even after the events of 2014, and continuing into the present, some people still view this as solely Putin's war, failing to recognize that the population has been inundated with lies. This level of conditioning and manipulation is almost Orwellian, akin to the characters in '1984.'

@@OkoloKino Yes, the more educated and the ones who could be the basis of opposition have largely fled the state. Many of those who remain do not wish to believe the "terrible truth" that Russia may actually be the aggressor - this is never an easy thing - and will therefore be more willing to believe the convenient lies which allow them to passively accept the dictatorship. Facing truths may force you to take action and taking action condemns you to lengthy prison sentences.
good movie channel but starting making it political?naaahh, thank you,not interested anymore!
I imagine it would be hard to talk about the history of Ukrainian cinema without having a bit of politics infused. I'm sure if you stick around you'll be pleasantly surprised by the next few videos!
@@addisonford i dont have a problem with the ukrainian cinema,i watched those movies when i was younger, they are good but when you re including commercials for pushing the war?! Then i have a problem with that!
If you have a problem with that, you whether a ruZZian slave who love your dictator in kremlin, or you don’t follow the main message about the Ukrainian film industry and how that was tortured and badly influenced by communism and modern fascist riZZian regime.
@@Denact0r im not either of that and if you have a problem with my opinion you re certified nazi supporting the nazi propaganda, azov batallion and all the nazi supporters
and by the way,you re using communism and fascism in the same sentence as they are the similar thing?are you insane?do you know what even you talking about?
You should also do Russian Movies. Since they are gonna win the war.
Whether you didn't get that this was made by Ukrainians with the message to introduce Ukrainian culture to the world and support Ukraine, or you are deliberately trying to offend the whole nation and the creators by your ignorant comment… Ukraine WILL WIN!!!
nice try troll but russian orcs already lost it
Ignorant comment
