What a great episode. Sure, Sawyer had a tragic past, and like some feel, just because of that he didn't have to become like that man, but he did. One things for sure, if you remember, when he went with the party to climb up higher to test the signal on the radio, he said to Kate... 'I'm a complex guy sweetheart', he sure got that right. He's more complicated than you first think.
Wait a minute, Sawyer isn't profiting from being on the island? He's ransacked the aircraft and horded all kinds of stuff. He uses that to barter for things, at the very least, it makes it so he can't be ignored. People come to him for things, that's a form of profit, a form of power. So, it depends on how you define 'profit'. I do agree though that Locke, has certainly profited from the Island.

And Sawyer is definetely a complex guy. Maybe even more than the writers knew by the time they wrote the Pilot!

Yes, Maggie Grace is amazing in this episode. Even though Shannon was just annoying me at this stage, I really felt for her because her acting was so fantastic.
I don't think Kate is just being 'nosy' when she tries to intervene while Jack and Sayid are dragging Sawyer off. She realises that something extremely bad is about to go down and she can't just say nothing at all.
When she says "If you do this...." we can assume she means it's something they can't come back from...they will go from being civilised human beings to mere savages if they follow this through.
This episode definitely changed how I felt about Sawyer...I had a lot of new-found compassion for him and found him far more interesting than I had done previously.

I liked Sawyer from the very first episode. Even when he shot the Marshall and missed... you could see he hated himself for that mistake. But I really feel for Shannon here.
Sawyer, ame ou odeie sempre vai ser um personagem interessante de assistir. Nessa altura do campeonato quando eu tava vendo a série ao vivo eu lembro que eu pensava assim "Porra esse cara é muito cuzão, mas eu amo quando ele aparece" ahahaha... Um adendo final, Rodrigo eu sou hetero, mas se o Josh Holloway piscasse pra mim eu não sei se eu manteria a compostura auhauah

Esse episódio é a razão de o Sawyer não ser um dos meus personagens favoritos em toda a série, é o ponto mais baixo dele e não consigo não levar em conta nem lá na frente quando ele melhora rs a parte boa é que quem não odiou ele ai com certeza vai amar ele no futuro

See, THIS is brilliant, complex character writing, I can get behind. Not just Sawyer, but Sayid and a bunch of other characters, too.

Without people in danger, this episode would show a handsome smartass pulling everyone by their nose and doing some entertaining stuff just to kiss the main girl. But the whole premise of the episode is that a girl's life is at risk. I can't stand people defending or justifying Sawyer in this episode, context is everything. He took advantage of everyone's kindness (even Kate's) for basically no reason. As you guys said, he chose to become Sawyer, nobody forced him to do so. And even if someone forced him, on the island everyone had a fresh start, nobody was pressuring him to be a jerk
Old habits die hard. It's true that everyone gets a fresh start on the island, but a fresh start isn't always that easy to, well...start.
And Sawyer knew that he couldn't help Shannon, so his general behaviour in this episode didn't actually make any difference to her whatsoever.
He was presented with a situation which gave him the chance to make himself even more hated and (seeing as this seems to be what he wants), he took it.
This WAS his reason.
The only person to genuinely suffer as a result of his actions in this episode was Sawyer himself. And Kate may have been pressured into kissing him, but she did seem to enjoy it, so I wouldn't really call that suffering.
I love that I can agree with you both haha! Humans are complex (as stated by Sawyer himself). We are whole universes ourselves. Victor said something very true in a video, I don't remember which one... He said "we don't have to make sense". Now, I know we want to make sense of a TV character and it bothers us when we can't. Which isn't even the case here, cause you both make sense, but being that complex, it's natural that we have different takes on those characters.

Who were the two men who had the biggest influence on Sawyer's life?
His dad -- abusive murderer.
Original Sawyer -- con artist.
Maybe our Sawyer is more afraid of being like the former than than the latter. And maybe becoming another con artist is the best way to find the original Sawyer...?
I have always found the "initial" Sawyer character as a badly written. His ultimate motivation and his actions have no correlation. Scamming people to get revenge on a scammer, furthermore the exact same scam, adopting the "name", wanting to be hated because he was hurt.
These character traits make no sense when compared to other characters who also have past traumas but their past trauma shape their present personalities better. i.e. Michaels personality reflects his trauma, so does Jake's savior complex, Jin's anger issues, and so on.
It's like a revenge fantasy written by a teenage "sigma gigachad" fan.

Sawyer is one of my favorite character, but his initial character is so silly.
I understand that... but Victor said something interesting in a video, I can't remember which: we don't always make sense ... our attitudes sometimes don't reflect who we are and they make our motivations unclear.
But that being said, I know what you mean, and I think the reason why it's hard to buy that is that we don't relate at all with his motivations in those first part of season 1.
