Before all the techniques, the main thing to increase your chance of knocking the ball loose is simply to be aware of that possibility -- to remember that just stopping the runner isn't the only thing you can do. The next thing to remember is that the farther from your shoulder that your extremity makes contact, the weaker your contact will be. So shoulder > arm > forearm > hand. Also know the form your opponent is carrying the ball by, because that tells you whether you have a better chance coming down or up on the ball -- and on the carrier's extremity holding it.

Coming from the ball side Grab hold of his thumb and pull it away from and off the ball Then push the ball up and out. The thumb is a key element for holding things Try to hold anything without your thumb.

Interesting take, never heard of that technique. Might be difficult to aim and pull a thumb while running but its true you cant hold anything with out one.

But your chance of getting under his thumb is extremely slight. Much better chance of prying his elbow away, for instance. The space between the ball and the thumb is an awfully small target.
