- Rear differential cover modification to allow servicing. It is recommended to do this modification with the complete RDU removed from the subframe and Differential cover removed!!
TOOLS REQUIRED
PPE
Wooden wedge
3/8 drive serpentine belt tool
16mm ratcheting wrench with swivel head
Torq 40 bit
1/4 box wrench
1/4 ractcheting wrench
1/8 pipe tapm
11/32 drill bit
Suitable filler tube
4 jack stands
Really good idea. I changed my RD oil at 70k by sucking it out, and unlike the PTU oil, it was surprisingly clean. There’s no doubt the PTU up front needs more frequent oil changes than the rear one.
Easy peasy solution!!! Well...easy for the rest of us thanks to your detailed info and measurements. I,seriously, appreciate your advice.
yup that's real nice
I just replaced the Rear Diff on my wife’s 2018 Ecosport… it started howling like a banshee at 40 K miles. I saved the cover from the old junk diff and will be doing this mod… thanks!
Good job. Sometimes creative service personnel can solve issues that an educated high paid engineer cannot see. Thanks
I would exactly the same. But the drill& tap to fit the new Ford drain plug for 2020+ Escape models. Great video
I'll be doing this real soon thanks for the video
Excellent video, Precise info, no fluff. Thank you ! Do you think it's possible to precisely drill a hole into the rear subframe to access the fill plug ? I realize it would require drilling through two walls of the subframe but there might be enough meat in the walls to handle it.

This rear differential no drain, the PTU no drain, (on 4x4 AWD), one side adjuster for timing chain assembly, (3.5), water pump inside engine, (3.5), transmission filter inside transmission case and having to split case to change filter, (6 speed) A-pillar covers flying off, carbon dioxide poisoning and such makes my on the whim choice to buy a 2015 Ford Exploder give me a lesson on always do good research. Just because someone you know has a vehicle they say they love and have had no problems with means little. Especially if you do your own maintenance.
Is there room for a 1/4 inch plug?
So are you saying the rear fill plug and the front side plug are at different levels? Or are the at the same level? To fill, you just pump oil in until it starts coming out but it doesn't matter which one? I'm asking because I'm going to extract the oil and can only do that from the rear plug...and was just going to refill from there.
The rear plug at the top of the differential is only for filling not leveling. The differential holds 1qt, if you have fluid coming out of the fill plug it's to much.
How about the front side will the oil drain out from the drain you have instilled? Thanks
All the oil will drain out.
@1:44, what do you call the 3/8” “bit” you have in the ratcheting wrench? Where do you get one? Please advise.
The 3/8 bit is available in a set that comes with the serpentine belt removal tool. KD, Lisle, Mac and Snap on are popular brands.
@@fordfixer3602 thanks!
do you have any of these for sale?!
Did you repair the different and replace the bearing
Sorry for the late reply😊. The unit in the video was scrapped. Bearings and crush sleave were not available at that time.
Will this work for a 2012 ford edge awd?
I believe the Edge rear diff is similar but I have not attempted a modification on one.
