#SeaOfStars #NintendoSwitch #ChronoTrigger
Something refreshing about this game it's that there is no color swap enemy (there is no red wolf, blue wolf, yellow wolf, etc). Each area has unique enemy with unique skill/animation.
Never really thought about that but it’s true, all of the enemies are different from one another and different enemies for each area. I do t think there are too many RPG’s/JRPGs that does this if any at all outside of Sea Of Stars
Sea of Stars looks absolutely magnificent🤩
If I didn't have a massive backlog, and the fall lineup wasn't so unbelievably STACKED, I'd download the game right now: good thing we have the eShop Wishlist😊
Ya the gamepass option makes me glad I reactivated sub for starfield perfect title to play between ac6 and sf
Chrono Trigger love shines through every pixel but I love the other influences that shine through in the battle system especially. The Paper Mario style timed attacks feel great- I can’t wait to play the full game!
Super Mario RPG* did timed hits first
Just to repeat the previous comment: that's a super Mario rpg inspiration
I'm super excited for it to drop tomorrow!
As someone who played chrono trigger really late in life, I thought it was great.
But as someone who adored the messenger from Sabotage, they got themselves a fan for life.
I never played The Messenger, but word is, it was nice.
Thoughts after 8m ?
Just finished the demo today and was so excited to learn it’s coming out tomorrow! Sadly I think I’m going to wait for the physical release in 2024 and finish my backlog for now but I’m looking forward to finishing the story!
Its on gamepass if you have that, which is how I'm gonna play it (even if it does hurt to not be able to play it on my switch or steam deck 🥲) then pick up my physical copy later.
This year man. I've never had so much quality backlog in my life. 2023 its just insane
I had a backlog long before this year. lol
And the year is only 2/3 over. We still have the holiday months to look forward to.
As a Game Pass subscriber, I've been intrigued by this for the past few weeks seeing it on the coming soon tab. I can't wait to start up Starfield, laugh at it while it struggles not to implode, then go play this and have a WAY better time and actually finish it.
Just finished playing the game for the past two hours strait. Didn’t even realize so much time had passed until I checked lol, I’m getting so immersed already. If I didn’t have to go to bed for work tomorrow I’d certainly keep playing it for so much longer
In The Messenger, one of the music note macguffins was from submerged ruins of a forgotten civilization that had sun and moon guardians. It was one of the most memorable ones with its own little exposition, but had no other context, just one of those things a writer throws out there to make the world bigger.
It actually has more context. In the music box lore dumb... it states that there were three gods who power waned as the world became disconnected with the stars. Then the world flooded, humans made a kingdom on the last landmass.
The messenger talked about 3 gods... this game is a story about their ascension.
played 16 hours already, LOVING it so far.
Just from the demo I played a while back - there are just so many references and mechanics inspired by the SNES and PS1 era JRPGs that it'd be day one buy... If I had the money...
The battle system is neat, a little SMRPG and a little Octopath. There's a fishing game like BoF series. There's references to other games both in item descriptions and characters (don't think I didn't see that Secret of Evermore reference).
Update: Bought the game, and am already halfway(?) through... Oh sweet RNJesus. The references run SOO much deeper than I thought. So. Many. References. Like holy sweet mother of God, there are so many references.
Here's a short list of the ones I noticed and can remember off tops:
- The Messenger (duh)
- Final Fantasy 7
- Breath of Fire 1 thru 4
- Secret of Evermore
-Secret of Mana
- Chrono Trigger (obv)
- Super Mario RPG (obv)
- Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
- Jirard the Completionist
- Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
- A Song of Ice and Fire
- Tales of Phantasia
- Star Ocean 1
- Nicholas Flamel
- Dungeons and Dragons
- Altered Beast
- Terranigma
And that's just a few... A few! I swear this game has more memberberries, puns, and in-jokes than a gaming forum from the early 00s.
This game is really good so far, better than I thought it'd be. Not enough credit is given to the level design in the reviews I've seen. The dungeons are really fun. I like the characters and dialogue a lot and that's coming from someone who typically mashes through story and cutscenes. The game just puts me in a good mood in general.
Also the "Wheels" minigame is also worth mentioning. It's a cool distraction from the main story.
I for one am happy to see it!....glad to see RPG's on Xbox again, I remember "Blue Dragon" and "Lost Odyssey" were 2 of my favorites on the 360.
You can also find hidden abilities in chests. I found one in the demo 😊
Well this is going in to my gamepass backlog for certain. This is the kickoff to one of biggest seasons we've seen in awhile and gamers of all platforms are eating like kings!
If this game is as close as to an Chrono Trigger sequel we've been wanting for so long, than I would take it. Because this game looks incredible and definitely look like an better follow up to Trigger than Cross has.
You want Chained Echoes, not this
Chrono Cross is one of the best RPGs of all time. Did you just want a CT expansion pack?
@bigduke5902 Don't take this the wrong way. But I'm not an fan of Cross. I tried to playthough the entire game. But after 10+ hrs, I've gotten so bored by it that I call it quits. It's not that the game is awful. Just wasn't doing anything for me and I got so bored by it.
@@cashnelson2306I completely forgot about that game. Is it as good as Trigger & Sea of Star? If so, I'll buy it.
I'm never hyped about neo-retro-SNES-RPGs.
But I'm truly hyped for this one !
Just bought this after hearing the completionist talk about it and cant wait to dig into it tonight.
This is the game Square wishes to make nowadays. I might even start to play Starfield a few day late because of it. Currently playing on Gamepass but definetly will buy on Steam on sale
I watched an documentary about the hatdships Yasunori Mitsuda had to face while composing the OST of Chrono Trigger. So maybe this OST doesn't hit the high notes as well as the depths of the soundtrack they aspired to, but the track in the background sounded beautiful! Thanks for the review :)
I would appreciate a video comparisson between Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes!
Absolutely stellar, can't wait for this to launch tonight!
I'm not an RPG fan... in fact, I think the only ones I've played are the Paper Mario and Mario&Luigi series... and yet, I feel I really want to play this game!!
You'll feel right at home with battle system then! If you've got gamepass or playstation plus it's certainly worth trying out.
May have to give the eShop demo a shot, seems like this might be the big indie of the year. Heard loads of good things about the Messenger (didn't play it as I heard it's a Metroidvania, a genre I'm not super keen on), so this should be great as well
The soundtrack alone is the reason this game is a masterpiece
Nah , you can’t have an incredible soundtrack and crap gameplay , sea of stars has it all. Unbelievable soundtrack, art, level design, atmosphere, story , combat
Been looking forward to this for some time. Played the demo last night and found it difficult. However, if I had read the instructions/how to play I think it would have been a bit easier. I was hoarding my magic and saving it. I also didn't understand what the icons meant above the enemies heads or that you could block/reduce damage or even increase yours by timing it. Once I caught onto this the game did become a bit easier. I also turned on the relic so you'd get an indicator whenever you timed your blocks, made me feel better that I was actually timing it correctly.
I need to fuck with more indie games cause this looks amazing 😊
This year has so many rpgs!
The world design and puzzles remind me of Golden Sun, and the battle system is a more refined one from Chrono Trigger
this is literally if someone saw Star Ocean: 2nd Story and said "Yeah that."
Can't wait to jump into this today.
"A lot of missing commas," I've wanted to email them to ask for a copy editor job since I started playing.
Gosh the graphics look nice
After what a huge letdown FFXVI was... I *really* hope this is as good as they say.
it is a retro style rpg which brings nostalgia but in no way is it as good as final fantasy 16
Pretty good game!
how are the setting options? is it possible to adjust the textbox popup animation? that is the main thing that bothered me in the demo and it seems that it wasn't changed... it would drive me insane if I played the game
RPG Golden age already here. An indie game didn’t just spark it.
I know, the release of Super Lesbian Animal RPG at the end of last year truly does mark a new golden age for the entire genre.
too be fair, it might be Wild arms influence instead of just Lufia 2, since that was the more prominent jRPG with field actions
This game is really insanely good ❤
I'm super excited for this but I wish everyone didn't mention Chrono trigger because then I just wish Chrono trigger was on PlayStation or the switch so I could just play that.
The rainbow colors on the thumbnail, are that a symbol for the 4 letter group?
Sea of Garl! That character ahahaha. Nothing but a sea of tears for him.
Call me nuts but I liked it more than chrono trigg.
But is it as good as Chrono Trigger?
What exactly about this game is at all similar to Illusion of Gaia or Final Fantasy VI? Now, I only played the demo (which, dialogue aside, I enjoyed enough to buy the game), but this is 100% Chrono Trigger to me and nothing else.
I so want this but I'll have to get it down the line. 😭
I'm kinda interested in this but I don't think it has time travel like Chrono Trigger did, which was my favourite aspect
longing the tooth. his voice sounds like Remy from ratatouille 😅
a missing comma ? bruh i could give 2 shits about grammar in a game
I just wish the characters got more spells to be honest after the first 25 hours
Hello, 667th like here, this game is cool.
So glad Jirard the Conpletionist is being removed from the game.
I wouldnt call this game an rpg, you play with the tools you are given and dont have much choice in anything
First 🫶🏾
I should’ve waited for this instead of buying FF6, that game was overrated…
For the love of god could you PLEASE put Discussion in your video title when it's an unscripted video? I'm barely watching this channel anymore because not only you're putting out WAY too much unscripted videos (and I'm not into those, they feel like a waste of time to me most of the time) but whenever I click on a video that looks interesting it's another godforsaken discussion video, which makes me distrustful on clicking on any other of your video, making me probably miss some great scripted videos... Just put, like, (Discussion) at the end of your video titles it would be so much easier to follow this channel, for now I think I'll just unsubscribe and stop clicking on your videos
Dandori issue
I was interested then I read the description and all of those comparisons make it sound like a bad game
The Messenger had the most obnoxious writing I’ve ever seen in a video game so not sure I’d enjoy an RPG prequel. All the praise it’s getting is making me take another look though.
Sea of Stars
Both are really good, but don't have the same design philosophy. Chained Echoes focus more on an political story/lore/evil empire. Sea of Stars is more about the adventure/journey. In Sea of Stars there is a "main story", but each island have its own "story arc".
@@Terranigma23 Right, I feel you there. The execution of the narrative is a bit different for sure, with Echoes being definitely more mature. And even though Sea probably has slightly better pixel art, I still feel Echoes is the overall better game because of the unique battle system, specifically the overheat mechanic. It's totally unique to the genre and really clever. I just feel like Echoes is genuinely unique and ambitious, I mean it was made almost entirely by one guy, whereas Sea is extremely well executed, but nothing unique or new. It's basically just an amalgamation of every 16 bit rpg classic.
@@Terranigma23 another thing I can mention as most likely being objectively better in Echoes is the script. For being written by the same guy making the rest of the game on his own, he's a very very good writer. None of the sloppy execution that's in Sea. Echoes has genuinely good writing.
@@luminary6162 I mean, Chained Echoes took a LOT of ideas from other games. Mech battle are from Xenogears. The deal system, hunt system, and Ograne Grottos are basically from FFXII. The made your own guild and find new crew is from Skies of Arcadia. The overdrive system is clearly a hit or miss for some people. The game is well or less balanced (some boss fight are more easy than normal encounter). Chained Echoes is my favorite game of 2022, but so far I really dig the world of Sea of Stars, especially how well level design is made.
@@Terranigma23 That's the thing though. All the rpg comparisons you made are from other, more technologically advanced eras with more ambitious ideas and mechanics. Xenogears, FFXII and Skies are all games with ideas that have never been executed in an indie 16-bit one man rpg. But yet there they are, all wrapped up in a 16bit labor of love. That's my thing. I think Sea looks amazing, but it does things that we typically see in 16bit rpgs. That's not necessarily the case with Echoes, which is why I prefer it overall so far. It's just really ambitious and I can only imagine the stuff the creator will make next. Overall, I'm glad both games exist. They don't even need to be compared, even though it's inevitable that they will. And when that discussion is brought up, I'll probably always champion Echoes. But as I said, I love Sea as well and it's possible my opinion cam change when I actually get the game, though I doubt that will be the case. Gosh, the 50$ price is a little ridiculous. Echoes is cheaper too! Haha I know I sound a bit cynical, but I just really admire Echoes. And no one on this channel even paid it any mind. With Steve and Ash's supposed favorite games being Chrono Trigger, it's baffling to me that it was basically blatantly ignored by both dudes. Oh well.
How can @AshPaulsen at 2.14min in say that its been years and he cant remember much about #TheMessenger from @SabotageQc #SabotageStudio but at 20:50min he goes deep and speaks about the lack of polish in the writing and in depth compares it to Messenger. This "real review" claiming to be 10hrs in hmmmm seems a bit dodgy.
