Today we’re taking a look at a new offering in the market of semi-hollow, thinline electrics. Eastman Guitars are a brand seeking to change the perception of guitars built in the east. When you build guitars using high-grade components like Gotoh hardware, Lollar pickups and Switchcraft electronics, it’s hard to imagine the end result being a poor quality instrument.
The only place where the guitar could fall short would be in the craftsmanship itself - so how does a brand like Eastman manage to deliver boutique, ‘custom shop’ quality at a sub $2k price point?
Eastman have a team of luthiers crafting their instruments by hand in their very own workshop. Not a factory - a workshop. One where the workers build Eastman instruments and nothing else.
Big manufacturers often outsource their production to Asian factories where multiple brands are built under the same roof. Of course, good quality guitars can be and are made everyday in such factories, but sometimes the attention to detail required for building a top-grade guitar is missed out on a production line.
Romeo is the latest addition to the Eastman Guitars family, and after having played this guitar for a week or so, I can attest to the high quality of craftsmanship on offer from their Beijing workshop.

I've got an Eastman T64/v, which is just stellar and now, after hearing what you did on the Romeo, man, Eastman is just going from strength to strength.
Best video demo for this model I’ve come across. Amazing review, tone and playing!
Eastman is knocking the ball out of the park with their range of handbuilt guitars, a friend of mine has an acoustic that sounds beautiful and knocks spots off his Taylor which is now up for sale
Great Video !!
Great sound!
Beautiful guitar, sounds great!
fantastic playing ! I've just bought the T59v ! Can't wait. Excellent video too I might add. \
In Brazil we do also have some great luthiers. The handcrafeted guitars here are built using brazilian wood, which is usually very expensive out there, cause it's considered exotic or something like that.
i have an Eastman baritone .. love it .. beautiful guitar
I have the 486 with phat cat p90s Eastman makes great guitars really high quality. I love my 486 it has a unique tone its brighter than my humbucker epi sheraton. It's very versatile it can be jazzy country bluesy great too for R&B and classic soul
Epic playing as always bro 👌🤘🎸🔥
Cheers Karl!
Love you playing and a beautiful guitar to .
Nothing lacking tonally and great feel!
Great playing. The clean tones are pretty good and the chord work comes out rather nicely.
robben ford style. well played!
If only all reviews could be conducted like this...perfect, Ross...just perfect!
Thank you!
You’re a great player! I have the T486 with Seymour Duncan Jazz and 59 pickups. And two Eastman acoustics 👍🔥👋🇦🇺
Man U can play and what I fine guitar. Eastman makes fantastic instruments!
Eastman is the new Gibson.
Eastman is building really fabulous guitars!! Great demo Ross!
I agree Shawn!! I love Eastmans story too... no CNC... fully hand carved .... factory is virtually quiet cuz there are no machines... building world class violins with tools only available in the time of Stradivarius himself... now building world class guitars with the same luthiers theyve had for decades... what a gift to the world of musicians... an asian company worthy of respect and support ! I now own an Eastman myself and its feel and playability are epic.. not a thing needs upgrading ! It would out perform instruments two to three times what it cost !! One of the best guitars ive played in 30 plus years...
@@markkoher3468 And on top of all of that, they are very sweet people!
Damn it's got that tele thing going on in the middle portion. What a cool guitar.😊
Someone has been watching the Crosscut Saw jam at Namm with Josh Smith, Kirk, and Ariel
Hi Ross excellent video review. You mention that Eastman sent you a guitar to say thank you for doing the review - may I ask what they sent you? Thanks.
Hard to get but Eastman are making some beautiful guitars, will probably never buy another Gibson if I can ever manage to track down some Eastmans.
Bello good
Incredible playing on the intro Ross! Very inspiring 😊. I was very interested in the Eastman acoustic parlour guitars recently - lovely guitars and amazing specs and great value for money. I did however end up buying an Auden small body acoustic instead. Similar set up as Eastman i.e. handmade guitars by a small team in China but final set up and finishing done here in the UK.
Thank you!
Was that the Emily Rose you bought from Auden? I just got one two months ago and it’s superb. I can’t believe Auden are just up the road from me.
@@andyfaden Yes, it was the Emily Rose Artist model. Cedar top / Rosewood back and sides. Such a rich and complex tone for a small body.
@@makdaddy999 Many thanks.
After trying out a bunch of Gibson and Epiphone 335s in my local Guitar Center, I bought an Eastman T59/v and it is worth every penny and was better and any 335 I played and it's not even close.
Very nice feeling and sounding instruments!
Can you post the tab for the piece you played around 6:30? It was beautiful.
I can see the Spruce but is that a laminated top. It doesn't matter that much I'm just curious. It's a great guitar.
How big is the block under the bridge? How is the feedback?
What drive were you using on the lead tone?
I picked up an Eastman T59v in Feb. Haven’t put it down since then.
Nice!
Sounded hella good. I wish you would tab out your solos.
Michael Schneider just slow down the video on RUclips’s little playback options and transcribe it. Super easy. And you can watch and see what frets he’s playing on.
Do you still have the Eastman SB56? Cheers
Just curious, but which model were you given by Eastman as a thank you for doing this review?
The tones of the semi hollowbody really do justice to Jazz and classic blues! Excellent design and performance, with great and meticulous technique indeed
My understanding is that this is a hollow body.
It’s a hollowbody
Best value guitar company. And if you can find one used you will be quite pleased.
For the record if a pick up comes in the guitar it is not "aftermarket" boutique yes, but they are "stock."
I know what guitar your goin to recieve
that be the red Les paul stylie guitar
no other way to go. Enjoy bro
great playing
Thx, just knicked a coupla licks from ya mate, and you're not getting em back ! Lol. I dig Eastmans man... everything I've seen from them is showing me Gibson is getting ScHOoLEd! Haha (even as I say this, I am lovingly cradling my [Gibson] les paul... My one & only...sigh!).
Thank you Ross, you're review is giving me serious GAS . The one point that will help me to finalize my decision is to know whether the neck edges are rolled. Thank your in advance for your feedback.
Gorgeous axe and great playing of yours...do u have tabs for that?):
If you need tabs, you wouldn´t be able to play it anyway.
I was looking for a 335 style guitar two years ago when these first came out and I almost bought one. I wish I had. I ended up with an Eastman T184MX, which is a great guitar as well, but I think the Romeo might be a tad bit sweeter.
That’s interesting. I have a T386 and I’m thinking about upgrading it to either a T185 or the romeo. What do you think Romeo might have that you’re 184 doesn’t? Not having played either of them it’s so hard to know which one to choose.
@@jdotte it's just a little cooler looking guitar. My 184 sounds awesome and I love how light it is, but that Romeo is just a sick looking axe. A Romeo with Loller pickups might sound a little sweeter too.
@@JimmyRadloff agreed! I really dig the look of the Romeo. Love the simple controls too. I’ll hopefully report back to you soon! There’s a Lollar Romeo several hours from me I hope to try. The lower output of Imperials sound amazingly versatile. I think I’ll like the smaller, lighter size. Just not sure if I’ll live the 1.72 nut as much as I do the 1.75 of my 386???
A bit late but I thought it important to mention their website says it’s a maple neck, not mahogany.
I have an Eastman acoustic, an E20P-SB...it is really well-made!
We believe you, get on with it.
I wonder what kind of overdrive he's using.....Anyone know?
Don’t know about resale value but I can’t get hold of any used ones, whereas Gibson 335s etc no problem. My guess is once you have got one of those you really don’t sell it. It’s scarcity (plus they’re probably not made in anywhere near the quantity the big boys do) will probably keep its price up. For this quality a hand built semi, you’d be lucky to get a US equivalent for less than $5-6000. By the way loved the playing, one of the best for this guitar I’ve yet seen.
Looks and sounds nice, but I don't get why manufacturers keep using boring dot inlays on high-end models.
Yeah, Fender, WTF?
What’s your thoughts on this vs the D’Angelico? I’m looking for a semi hollow body in the distant future.
Hmm good question.
I'd say they're both great guitars with different strengths. The D'Angelico has more of a classic semi-hollow, 335-style tone which I prefer. The Eastman to my ears, had more of a focused, less resonant tone. Closer to a solid-body. It also felt like an easier guitar to play due to the thinner neck profile. I'd imagine that you would feel more comfortable on the Eastman since the neck on your Veritas feels relatively thin.
The Eastman costs more than double what the D'Angelico does, but it feels the way that an expensive guitar should - better hardware, pickups etc. If I was to get one for myself I'd swap the pickups for something a bit hotter.
Ross Campbell thanks dude! Yeah I have those same pickups in my veritas. They are super dark and super “polite”. I can’t wait to swap them out, lol. But cool man! Thanks for the input! Always appreciated!
Great guitar but the fret access is kinda limited
I have 2 Eastman. A solid body and a slimline hollow body. Why? I wanted to by Gibson always have but the price you have to pay is way out off what I can afford. To be perfectly honest those 2 guitars are amazingly well built and sound awesome for what you pay for. Yes resale value is not going to be good. But I'm not interested in that. So they are just great guitars.
Great video, thanks Ross! Eastman portrays this as a hollowbody. Is it correct that there is no center block running the length of the body?
From what I've read a few times in other reviews, there's only a 'small block' located right under the bridge and connecting to the back.
It does not have to be made in USA to be good!!!
Agreed!
I agree! Most of my guitars are made In Asia.
Mrlz56 you have the right to buy any guitar you want. I agree $2k is a lot of money. What do you mean by slave labor? I doubt Eastman is not paying their employees.
Mrlz56 where are PRS guitars made? Thanks
Mrlz56 thanks
I have an Eastman t59 I absolutely love. I did swap out the Duncan 59 pickups for Bare Knuckle Boot camp vintage though. The Duncan's were just lack luster imo.
Doesn't the T59 come with Antiquity pickups? The T486 comes with a Jazz/59 combo. Love BKP though, I used to have some Mules and they were amazing. Stupidly, I sold them.
2300$ its listed for on the website. Same price you can get a Heritage.
Two years later....H535 is $2700....a Romeo can be had for around $1700 and it's just as impressive if not more. In fact, I sold my H535...wasn't anything special...whereas my T486 inspired me, big time. Picked up an SB59GT....and it keeps up with my Gibson Traditional in every way. Both great...one $1500, the other $2700ish.
I had a chance to play a Romeo at Huber in Breese in Michigan. Great guitar and great guitar store. I played it alongside my Ibanez AM153. I really wanted to get that Romeo. To be honest the AM153 was every it as good as the Romeo. The 153 design may not be as beautiful. Eyes of the beholder but the sounds, playability and quality of build are on par. AM153 new $999, Romeo $2,499. Thought this might help someone make a decision.
Ok, but I wanna go to that wedding that starts with Aretha and goes to GnR.
China is NO different than US.. you got some good stuff and you got your crap and all points in between. I have seen lots of American made crap
Except China has higher literacy, lower homelessness, actually produces things, doesn't start wars all over the world with 800 military bases
Mi saluti?
They are quite pricey for a far east made guitar though but you get alot and they are exceptional instruments
You don't see people complain about the prices of nice MIJ guitars do you?
T'would have been nice for them to let you keep it, or to let you pay the difference bewtween their "gift guitar" and the semi's retail value. It's not how business works, but you can dream. I'd swap that for my CS339 no question.
EDIT: Is it a semi or hollow??
It's a semi-hollow
It’s not a semihollow, it’s hollow, apart from the retaining block underneath the bridge, no centre block through the guitar like a es335 it’s hollow like es330 or same as PRS hollowbody.
Eastman guitars are going to be really expensive in the future. Romeo. Is not a good name for this kind of guitar
This guitar need a trem!!! Than its perfect
It would be possible to add a bigsby to this, or a duesenberg trem, very easy fit.
The newer Romeo LA has a tree bridge!
I believe music (especially guitar playing) ought to remain politics free BUT. Watching developments in Hong Kong and just having read about the millions of imprisoned muslims in western China, to be ethnically "cleansed" is gonna count me out of owning a guitar made in China. Feel free to delete this note, I kinda understand.
You are sooo right, I heard that US school kids are killing each other, so I am afraid I cannot buy any american products anymore. And white policemen kills black
innocent guys, American politicians are lying to the people, Americans have been slaughtering native Indians in the past... you can extend the list yourself.
So you have "read about the millions of imprisoned muslims in western China", but have your ever been to western China to see if it is truth? I have traveled Xinjiang in various ocasions through 2 decades, and I can assure you that the uyghur muslims are just fine and live a much better life than the muslims in Central Asia or Middle East. That's to say, you don't necessarily need to worry about Xinjiang muslims when deciding to buy or not a guitar made by a TOTALLY PRIVATE COMPANY in China. If so, you may also worry about the hundreds of millions of muslims bombarded by the US Air Force, whose country fabricates Gibson and Fender.
