The Mercedes-AMG CLA45 is a decent car -- but it has some flaws. Today I'm reviewing the CLA45 and I'm showing you all the ins and outs of the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG.

Correction - Mercedes finally did add a couple of the features I complained about as standard for 2019, though not for 2018 (specifically heated seats, keyless go, and dual-zone climate control). It's still insane to me they weren't standard for 2016. Of course, these new features came with a price increase, and now the CLA45 starts around $54,000, which is just barely behind an RS3 at $57,000.
Go get an RS3, people. Go get an RS3.

Can confirm as I have those $9 Amazon specials on my 2018 C300 lol. Except mine don't bleed that bad even on film. And they don't have that odd bulge and they actually LOOK stock and don't look like I shredded the socket installing them.
I think in general the door projectors seem a bit tacky even when from the manufacturer. Looks way better to have illuminated door sills.
355hp out of a stock 4 cylinder engine is quite impressive.

I have a 2015 GLA45 AMG, the same car with a hatch. It has dual-zone auto climate, rear camera, navigation, the sport mode exhaust plus upgraded seats. All these make for a better experience. And we added coilovers for even better handling with the same ride, that I find acceptable. Yes the DCT can be a pain, but if you put it in Sport or Manual (a part of the exhaust package - which this car doesn't have) the clutch engagement for the DCT gets better. We still love ours!

I drive a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Limited. Has way more luxury features than this. Trizone auto climate control, keyless entry/start, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency collision braking, backup camera with trajectory and cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, etc. Even the rear seats are heated!
I don't think he means it's like it. It is. Look at the roofline and the rear of both cars.
Hyundai doesn't break as often as Mercedes does.

I just don't understand. My mom just purchased a 2016 C300 with the AMG package and there isn't a feature that thing doesn't have. And the MSRP was $54k, the same as this one. I have no idea how the ACTUAL AMG model doesn't have any features. Very odd.

My 2017 CLA also has them, they’re optional extras. The original owner of this car didn’t spec them.

ctk4949 it is aftermarket. Look at the fitment, it doesn’t line up. You can buy those for like $20 on amazon. The illuminated Star is also a cheap aftermarket thing you can buy. (Or have the dealer rip you off for $500)

Have a 2014 CLA 250 with the AMG package body style 4-Matic with all the features that were missing in this car. Got it for barely over $20K

the amg package is all looks no go lol you pay for the 400hp engine and they charge huge for options my 2019 cla amg 45 was 54k to start 3k for recaro seats 5k for limited slip dynamic package .they just kill you with the $$$$$ options so you can have a plain jane amg 45 for 54 grand and it looks like a cla 250 for spent 75k and get a cla amg that looks like a true proformance car
In australia our cla45 has leather heated/cooled recaros, moon roof, and every option the amg c63 has.
The 250 Sport I drive has literally all the features Doug mentioned this 45 not having, the owner of this 45 must have been really boring because its such a badly optioned one.

Considering it’s in pretty bad shape to begin with, with some cheap ebay parts added, I wouldn’t trust the jerkiness of the automatic or the suspensions of the car.

Everything you said is standard on the UK model and it has a completely different interior. Looks like the 220 interior rather than the cla45 (UK spec)

I have reason to believe the puddle lights and light up grill emblem are aftermarket. Both can be had on Ebay, inexpensively. The puddle lights in particular, scream that.
EMF Audio exactly my thought as there is a gap around the opening. Germans would never allow for a hideous gap like that!
CLA actually has light up benz star option. I've seen alot of rentals having that option. Puddle lights on other hand looks like chinese junk of ebay
We have a 45 as Company car and those puddle lights are for 100% Aftermarket. Mercedes offers nothing like that OEM.

I have a 2016 WRX Limited. I payed under 25K. It has a sunroof, heated seats, pockets on the back of the seats. I can't believe a 50K Mercedes doesn't come with more. Ridiculous!

The 2016 AMG CLA45 cost $49,500, with no add-ons/options
The AMG Door Lock Pins are priced at $50 in the shop, right now.
The Paint is either Cosmos Black metallic, which cost $720, or no-additional-cost Night Black.
The mirrors look like they are either the AMG Carbon Fiber Mirror Covers, which is $1,200, or the Gloss Black Exterior Mirror Housings, which cost $200.
The Wheel Hub inserts, in “Titanium Silver”, cost $25 for one, or $100 for 4
The Illuminated Star cost $550
The wheel locks, one on each wheel, cost $140 for 4, with the key.
The AMG Exterior Night Styling Lights cost $750.
The Red Brake Calipers cost $300
The owner did not get a sunroof, probably since it was too expensive for them: $1,480 for the Panorama Roof. Nor did they get any other options.
Heated Front Seats: $580
Keyless Go: $550
AMG Driver & Passenger Performance Seats: $2,250
AMG Adaptive Suspension: $850

Is this REALLY a CLA 45? Or did the owner buy a used base model CLA and slap fake badges and fools people on Turo?
1. The door light projectors are aftermarket aliexpress parts.
2. The front brake caliper cover looks aftermarket.
3. The info screen is a base model version (unless MB really does give you base parts regardless of engine trim)
It doesn't seem weird to me. In a lot of countries in Europe, when you order a German car, you have to check a long list of options, the base models often come with the smallest wheels you could find, basic manual cloth seats, no AC, no backup camera, no parking sensors, no lane departure, no GPS, no cruise control, halogen headlights, no metallic paint,... So you could get a base model for 25kEUR, but if you want it well equipped you'll have to add 10kEUR of options, and another 10k for a decent engine. And it goes the same with supposedly high end models such as the MB AMG, BMW M or Audi S/RS, but with some sportier options being in the base model.
The amg model is supposed to have red seat belts. This one is fishy.

also its a 2014 or older, the steering wheel and the center console gives it way, the 16+ have silver buttons and the new wheel

OMG!!! Doug, I adore your reviews. I'll be honest with you, I probably watch them at work more than I should, and at home I watch them at least a couple of times a week. I had been wondering when you were going to get around to reviewing the CLA class, but I was a little disappointed when I watched this video. I don't know why they gave you a 45 lacking so many options, but my 2015 CLA 250 (not even the AMG version) has all those options you mentioned and then some. I paid 36k for my CLA 250 in 2016 and it has dual climate control, heated seats, panoramic sunroof, key less go, illuminated star, AMG styling package, touch start, heck... I even had them throw in some free winter floor mats!! I got a very good deal since my CLA 250 was a Mercedes dealership loaner with only 4,500 miles. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones? I'm actually kind of glad that I chose the 250 instead of the 45 because the difference in the price of the scheduled maintenance is noticeable. Less times at the dealership, more money in my pocket, I'm not complaining. I love my car and I'm in it for the long haul. Thank you very much for all that you do to bring joy to us car guys, but I had to be the one to step in and tell you not to judge the CLA class on a subpar rental that you were given. Peace brother!!!!

I have a story about this car.
When I was in HighSchool about 2 years ago I had a part time job at TurtleWax in the detail shop. I was assigned this exact car but in the color red. I got inside, started it up and said wow this thing sounds awesome! I put it in reverse tap the gas and IT LITERALLY TOOK OFF! I slammed the brakes... the car wouldn't move unless you hit the gas. So Im trying to maintain a slow speed. I get it in the shop and as im cleaning the inside im looking around just wondering why it looked so empty. Long stroy short. This car sucks when it comes to value. Go with an Audi instead. Everything Doug said was spot on.

My 2013 A45 (hatch version of the CLA) has all of those options, including the AMG bucket seats, aero kit, exhaust and wheels which that one doesn't - all optional extras... including panaoramic roof, Distronic (adaptive cruise control) and Parktronic (parallel parks itself). Options mate!

I took my drivers Test and lessons in Germany in cla 180 diesel and even that thing had heated seads and Backup camera and even a sunroof
Wow, scoring on this one confused me. I thought for sure features would be a 3 given what it's up against, the price, and what it doesn't have standard. I would have given quality a high 5. For acceleration, that measurement always seems to be treated against ALL cars you've ever reviewed, rather than against the entrants in the class.
Whatever the case, this review has knocked my impression of this car down a good amount. I'm the kind of buyer that is very much in the options-maxed-out camp and to me the CLA45 might as well be the Mitsu Evo. I don't care if few options means weight saved; I want the features because while I may have the biggest engine, I'm not getting it to win stoplight drag races.

I have a few cars and my daily is a 2001 CLK55 AMG 5.5V8 354BHP 510tq, has sunroof, satnav, dual auto climate and heated seats and cost me 6k. The cla is a girl's plastic pretend AMG, check my vids I have an exhaust clip it even sounds better

in the 45s you learn, from a stop, to just kick the throttle a little and then hold it low. you just gotta give the e-clutch something to work with. some call it '45 foot', you get used to it

Crazy I just got a 2014 cla 45 AMG and every feature he complained wasn’t there. Is there on the 2014. Backup camera, heated seats, rear ac, dual zone ac, panoramic sunroof, built in navigation.. I wish I had the light up grill and emblem though 🔥

Glad to see your honest review. I have the CLA 250 4 Matic. I really love it it's the perfect size for me and has plenty of power for my need and very comfortable to drive. I really like how low they sit gives you good handling and a more sporty feel.

ya the rs3 is a great car but audi sucks balls good luck with getting there sports cars warranty work dont had a brand new 2017 ttrs at 10k miles the front axle was clicking and engine was runnign ruff... they said they only cover the part of the axle that attaches to the motor not to the wheel and the engine valves were warped and theydont cover valves just the components that hold then in... yup so brand new car after 8 months and 10k miles 4k repair bill and this wasnt a unique story i didnt learn my lesson and in 2018 got a rs5 same story nick and dimed what the fixed and this was even a different dealer ...audi just plays hard ball untill you just say screw it and pay for teh repairs ..got a used 2019 cla amg needed service they came and got it (didnt even buy it from them) dropped of a loaner car washed it and dropped it off at my work when it was ready and even left a care package inside for me ...so ya rs3 is a great car but the problem is the car its the manufacture that blows and that killed all audis for me ever again

James Campagna ya that’s why CLA is one of the most successful launch for Mercedes. Older CLA before 2017 I would agree to certain extent but 2017 and after. The car is seen as a very good value to me. And yes everyone has their own opinions. Bought almost 3 years and still no regrets. For the money, it was so much worth it. There are down sides of course but I got a good price on it and it doesn’t depreciate as much as people think. Try KBB and compare to the Lexus LCF or RCF. This car is a stepping stone for younger buyers who sacrifice comfort for brand, technology, sporty, and performance. Name a new car in 2016-2017 that you think I should have gotten instead. I’ll explain why I didn’t get those vehicles. I did a lot of research on this and every car in the segment and this is by far the best one and fulfill my desire. Check my video, I made it look amazing. And again, this is just beginning. GT 63 S, E 63 S, or AMG GTR are all in my radar in the future. Mercedes did their marketing right with this car. This is why their new CLA/A class will be the first car that has the latest technology “Hey Mercedes” technology, etc before even the S class.

Even for a 2016 this car should come with most of the options you talked about. my Parents recently bought the last year model of the GLK 350 which ended in 2015. It was the most Base model you could get, and it came with more options than this thing
You should review my grampa's Peugeot 309. It has so few features, the indicators don't disengage. It doesn't have a clock! It has no glove box!!! There are no door pockets!!!!

By the way that they look, I reckon that the lit-up Mercedes logo on the front and the puddle lighting are both aftermarket. The way the puddle light emitter is set up in the door is very shoddy, doesn't look like Mercedes would send a car out like that.

I've never actually seen a CLA45 without any of the things you just named, you must have been very unlucky to find the only CLA45 in the entire world without those options ticked.
Would 100% take the RS3 over this. Looks better, more HP and 5cyl sound is just orgasmic! Still a nice car and entry into the AMG world

I always felt like all Audi models have had the same shape and grille. Nothing changed over the past 20 years in terms of design. Same goes for bmw. I love the different curvy shapes that Mercedes’ experiments with here. Just my opinion though.

I have a 2014 cla 45 AMG. I have a pano, roof heated seats, dual climate controls, navigation, and a backup camera. I had no idea if I bought a newer one I would have gotten screwed.
So someone bought a totally stripper version of the CLA45 and put it on Turo ... it happens, but I don't think its representative of the car itself. Browse around, most used CLA250s and 45s have all (or most) of the features -- sunroof, heated seats, dual-zone auto climate control, backup camera and even keyless-go. The sunroof option was somewhat expensive, but everything else was cheap to add and was often equipped with a single option (premium 1 iirc) package.
Yes it's crazy that none of those features came as standard, particularly on the CLA45 since it's so expensive, but ... they were options and they were commonly equipped. You can rag on Mercedes for getting people with tons of little options rather than doing these things as standard, but you make it sound as though none of these features were even available for the 2016 model year. They were. This was an owner that made a lot of bad decisions in his/her car buying process more than anything.
All that being said, I agree the CLA45 isn't worth the money. You're paying a ton extra over the CLA250 for a car that is 90% identical to the 250 and just has a (much) nicer engine. Just shows you what a difference it makes to start with a higher-end car if you're going to get an AMG version -- the c-class, for example, is clearly a nicer car, and the C43 and C63 are proportionately much nicer because of it.
The doug effect just dropped this cars value around 5-8% in the US. They should never made a backup camera optional in 2016. Its standard in a 12k nissan versa.

Aaron Chantra Good god it’s not that hard to tell it’s a legit AMG 🤦♂️. Just the shifter itself is a dead giveaway that it’s an AMG. The standard CLAs have the shifter mounted on the steering column.
For the price point (here in Australia at least) it’s still an awesome looking powerful amg

CocoPlayer actually it’s 0-100 in closer to 14 seconds. Also speed isn’t always the answer, I’m sure that Merc will struggle to get to 100k miles while I’m at 122k and counting now

The car is on Turo, speaks a lot about its owners. If I had a fully kitted out CLA45 I wouldn’t even think of lending it to someone else.
Got mine 2018 for 25k last year out the door with 90k miles it has been a champ I love it and is completely speced out it does have keyless go auto climate control essentially has all the stuff this one did not. also has a sunroof , heated seats , Apple play and android auto ,back up camera , power seats , interior lighting, has rear climate controls and fans also has rear arm rest and cup holders , has the amg exhaust and suspension and rims don’t let this review sway you to opting out from this amazing car do more research find one with good options go out there and test drive one

As a German I was always surprised at how Doug reviewed the options in German cars. Here it is well known that if you buy any domestic vehicle without options, you will get a metal box with a 50-90hp engine and a manual transmission. Audi for example treats cruise control (not adaptive, just regular old cruise) as an extra. - The result of that is that two German vehicles in Germany are almost never alike. I for example have a relatively loaded 2017 car that doesn't have a backup camera either and the reason for that is that the previous owner simply didn't check the corresponding box in the online configurator.
This is not all bad because I don't have to pay for some shit I don't care about. For example electronically adjusted seats are a feature I would never spend a single Euro on. Keyless Go on the other hand is something I would never want to miss.
Yep. There was a time where you can get manual windows on an S-Class if you felt like it. In America however, cars are optioned so much differently, especially luxury cars. Instead of being able to select individual options, most features are bundled up into separate packages. I think the German way is so much better.
