Greetings from the Uk l have never owned a copy of jazz at the Pawnshop. But l am waiting on the delivery of the deluxe edition and watching your video and listening to your feedback has heightened my excitement to be able to listen to it on our system.
AudioNautes just released a One Step 45 rpm boxset with 4 LPs. An audiophile must-have classic in the sense of offering a credible authentic listening experience of what has been recorded on those evenings back in 1976 and how it has been recorded. I truly believe that one cannot get any closer to what is on the original tapes. Some reissue labels have tried to top the original Proprius release with partial success but the AudioNautes one is at current the ultimate release. By its nature, vinyl records cannot be perfect but the AudioNautes is a 99.99% one. Fabio Camorani and his process partners have delivered a masterpiece ticking all boxes. This is highly recommended for those who are able to appreciate the outstanding work of everybody involved and Fabio‘s vision, leadership and courage to carry thru such a difficult and costly project. This is one of his masterpieces. Highly recommended!
I think this is a great example of how the recording and mastering make such a huge difference in how good something sounds on playback at home on a HiFi system.
Totally agree about the music and the recording. It totally sucks me in to the music and it swings so hard for me at times, just Love It! I’ve listened to this set since I started my audio journey in the late 80’s. I’m also Swedish, so my father had heard some of the musicians live. Arne Domnérus and George Riedel also played with my hometown Brass/windband!? (I played the clarinet myself). George Riedel (on bass) is also famous for composing several childrens song with Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking etc). Well, off topic, thanks for the review😊
Hi Kenny, I hope you're doing well! I’m a big fan of your content and really appreciate the insight you bring to the audiophile community. I have a quick question for you regarding Jazz at the Pawnshop (the deluxe version). I recently ordered a copy directly from 2XHD since I'm in Canada. Unfortunately, my 33 RPM copy came with excessive static noise-enough to significantly impact the listening experience. I reached out to René Laflamme (the sound engineer who mastered both the original album and the Late Night version), and he mentioned that all 33 RPM copies seem to have similar issues. I even shared a video of the noise with him, but his stance was that this is to be expected for the 33 RPM version. René pointed me to your review and suggested I consider replacing my order with the Late Night 45 RPM version instead. Before I go ahead and order from Analog Productions, I wanted to ask for your input. Could I share the video of my copy with you to see if the sound quality matches what you've experienced with your copy? I’d really appreciate your thoughts on whether the 33 RPM is inherently problematic or if I just got a bad pressing. Thanks so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing your opinion. Best regards,
Kenny: I too have the version you do from Acoustic Sounds. That is the only version I have. I would rate the performance as an 8-9 and the sound as 11. Over half of the songs are favorites of mine and considering most all of them were done in one take it is a very good performance. If I went to this show I would feel I got my money's worth and then some. Yes, maybe you can find better performances by the artists that made the songs famous, but you would have to buy many other records to do so. I have the original hit recordings of many of these songs. This is not a "covers or tribute band" trying to capture the exact sound of the originals. I am always open to hearing covers or new interpretations of great songs. The sound is amazing, you are taken inside the club. You are there. The level of detail is amazing. You almost expect someone the sets some drinks on your table. The sound stage is amazing. The sound of the instruments is amazing in their realism. you hear the mallets striking the vibraphone. I love the sound of the vibraphone and I can't think of when I have heard it more realistically reproduced on a record. I have no other version to compare this LP to, but I am pretty confident I would be hard pressed to find something sounding better. This is one of the handful of disks I will choose from if I want to show off my system and why I spent all of the money on my gear and why I buy LPs. Anyone I have shared this record with is usually sold already after listening to Limehouse Blues. I think even Benny Goodman would have liked this cover.
I agree with you 100 percent on this record and the sound of the vibraphone and the detail of all instruments and the venue that it was recorded at comes through fabulously on a audiophile system. It's not the best jazz performance that I have heard but it's one of the best sounding jazz performances on record.
Your last question about hype is an interesting one. I don’t have this album, but lots of albums have some amount of hype coming from different audiences. The audiophile community certainly seems to have elevated a few records due to sound quality. Hip hop fans have also elevated some jazz records that have been sampled often. Nothing wrong with any of that, but I think it’s helpful to keep the context in mind.
This record was £100 in my local record store and £74 on Discogs for a near mint original pressing. Much as I remember loving the record originally when it came out I did not purchase either.
I have a copy of the CD. Such a well recorded disc! If you're interested in classical, I can also highly recommend Reference Recordings release of the Minnesota Orchestra performing Aaron Copeland (RR-93). That's a goto demo disc for me!
One track from the original 2xLP seems to be missing. Strange. In total, I believe 27 tracks have been released from the two nights over three albums in different configurations. Maybe one day we will see an AAA box set with all tracks.
as a mix engineer i don't find anything special about how this record sounds. It's a great performance for sure and it sounds good, but I tried to use it as a reference for speaker tuning and room balance and it is useless. it lives entirely in the mid range. the low end is weak and the stereo field is entirely narrow. Maybe its a generational thing, but sonically this just sounds like an good old recording. Strange to me that it s a hifi fave.
I just listened to it and the soundstage confused the heck out of me. At times the vibes are 10' wide. The snare and floor tom move all over the place. I thought I heard the piano move from stage right to behind the drums.
@@jcfab1266 Agree 100% ! It's definitely not just a 2 track stereo capture. It doesn't even sound like it all happen on the same night/setup, sometimes sounds like a different stage or distance all together. Sometimes its almost mono, other times REALLY wide. I would imagine it was multi tracked (8 or at least 4 tracks) and each song got a different mix treatment. IT's really (other than the playing) kinda a mediocre sounding recording. Doesn't strike me as special in any real way. Audiophiles get all in a huff over certain records and 99% of it is lore.

Iconic record to say the least. From recording quality, mastering to performances this is a must have in any collection.
So true 👍 👏
Found AN OG in the wild @ a THRIFT shop...SONICS R WOW ! Thx TONYS LPSRUS
That was a cool thrift store find 👏
I didn't want to embrace another musical style, but I got into jazz. And then i found this kind of records. And so a great passion began.
Jazz is great 😊😁

That AudioNautes version is very tempting but I'm not sure at the $200.00 price tag, but I'm definitely considering it.
Recording 10, performance 8, musical choices 6

recently discovered this. fantastic recording. would love to hear the r2r
I think it sounds better than my 2016 copy that was pressed at Pallas, but I’m only going off of memory. I haven’t compared them back to back yet.
Thank you very much for your comments and viewing 😀

Yes for shure, the ambiance and realism is tremendous 👏
