  • Jewelry repair is relatively common for anyone that has a piece of jewelry. Being normal does not mean that people understand what to expect out of any given jewelry repair process. We discuss some common scenarios when going to a jeweler and inquiring about a repair. Covering some questions you can ask and generally preparing you for what to expect to make for a better process and less potential worry when handing over a precious item you don't want to let go, even for a short time.

I have a jeweller I’ve used many times over the last few years, and he now knows my needs quite well. I have very arthritic hands and cannot manage the small clasps used on many necklaces, so he’s used either magnets or lobster clasps to help with that. But recently, I came up with the idea to convert my silver charm bracelet to a necklace so it would be put to use, instead of laying in my jewelry box. That involved adding to the length, adding some charms I acquired for the job, and finding a good, strong lobster clasp. He did a great job, and it’s wonderful to have that piece reimagined and back in use!

I was a jeweler for over 40 years and I feel I was more than honest with all my customers. But I know others that made my trade look bad so I agree with you

That's a phenomenally long time, Dave. I see your post is a year old and I don't mean to bother you, but I have to ask; what made jeweler your career path? I've always had a great interest in gemstones but I never chased it as my career until this year, I'm very fresh into it. I only work sales on the floor right now but I have basic gemology with GIA and am enrolled to become eligible to do more.
What were some of the ups and downs in your 40 years? I just want to know more about the field (things I won't see on youtube videos like this). Is there something I should be careful for down the road?

Very helpful, thank you. I need to have my engagement ring repaired, so this was right on time. I don't have a jeweler, so will ask for recommendations for a jeweler from friends on social media and take it from there. Keep up the great work!

This was good information. The only thing I will kinda disagree on, is taking pictures. I am MORE than happy when customers ask to take pictures of their items when they drop off, I actually encourage it. This way when they receive their item back they can see the difference and often times its quite notable. Asking questions and building a relationship is absolutely correct. Any jeweler who has an issue with answering questions or taking pictures is not a jeweler you want working on your valuables. REPUTATION is everything.....from the first day I opened my doors, I have never spent a cent on advertising. I rely solely on word of mouth and anyone who takes the time to write a review.

That is wonderful advice and I never consider the jeweller might feel accused by my actions. Thankfully I know a great jeweller I trust. What I would add, is it's good to have a receipt for the jewellery you leave for work. I once had a pendant in for repair and when I went back late, by a month or so to collect it, the trainee assistant denied all recollection of it and her tone was accusing of me. I left upset but as I didn't have a receipt, I had no option. Thankfully a couple of days later, they rang and sheepishly said they'd found it. I was just so grateful for their honesty. Mistakes happen and I just feel for both sides, even a very general receipt that said something like 'green pendant for repair' would have been helpful.

This was a great video! I recently inherited my mom's jewelry, and there are several pieces that need to be repronged, cleaned, stones replaced and some pieces I want to plate from yellow to white gold, and some pieces I want to rework into new ones. My mother NEVER did research on jewelry repair, ask questions or was assertive in her expectations. She had an alternating amethyst and diamond marquis ring that was missing a marquis center diamond, and the jeweler replaced it with QUARTZ!😨😫 It definitely wasn't a diamond, or a white sapphire, or even a cubic zirconia, because it's not only dull without any light refraction, it's cloudy like Quartz. And yes, she paid for it and didn't demand they replace it with the proper matching diamond 😓😒
So guess who has the task of getting it properly replaced with a diamond now, along with other pieces that have missing stones? I just hope I'll be able to get some kind of deal on having multiple pieces repaired or when they're plated in white gold, instead of paying the full price for each. 🙄😔

I need some guidance and I am hoping you have I sight. My diamond fell out and the jeweler had to replace the prongs. After receiving my ring back, I realized it was so sharp and catching on clothes and even scratching my husband. I checked by looking and using my fingernail and tge diamond seemed tight and secure. After 4 weeks, I discovered my diamond had fallen out and I can't find it. The ring and diamond did not come from where I was having the work done(mall jewelry chain). They had me drop it off days ago to have a close look at it. My question is, I have no insurance on it, and didn't buy it from this chain. Am I covered at all by the workmanship they did? It was only 5 weeks from picking up the ring and loosing the stone. Any imput would be appreciated. Thank you.

Last time I took a piece in to be mended they said it would take a few weeks. This place I had done business with for years. After a month and not hearing anything I stopped in. They closed, took my piece and I only has a ticket stub.

Hey, why don’t you have a jewelry store, in Maine or online? I’m sure many of us would be customers.
