As a young Hendrix student for the past year, and out of the hundreds of videos I've watched trying to figure out his rhythm, this is the one. Done with the teachers who throw you into one box and don't hint at any direction as to where to go with it. Here you learn how to connect shapes and apply them to Hendrix's own material. I rarely comment, but this video is it for sure.

Best guess might be that Jimi found all these shapes by the sounds he heard combining strings and frets… but who could really know his genius

True! His ear was one of a kind. 🤘

Great video! Really helps to understand better what is actually happening in some of these riffs.
Just a small question. What kind of pick are you using and do I see it correctly that you are holding it sideways?
Is there a specific reason for holding it sideways? My first guess would be easier rythm playing because of the less pointy edge.

Thanks! I'm using a .73 "Tortex Flow" pick by Dunlop. I like these picks because they are slightly smaller than standard Tortex Dunlop picks. They also have both a pointier main tip and more defined sides. So if I'm soloing or playing lead lines, I'll generally use the pointy tip. For rhythm stuff I gravitate towards the side because it seems to glide across the strings easier and has a less direct "pointy" sound to the chords. Playing on the side is pretty personal to me I would say, so definitely take that with a grain of salt! It's just something my hands and ears gravitate towards. Thanks for checking out the vid!
