- Hope y'all had a great week! I'll be the first to tell ya that I don't know a great deal of Breaking Benjamin material but Chad Szeliga is a drummer who I personally think has done phenomenal work at every stop in his career. Chad's style is one that does not come naturally to me. He was a guy who I watched immediately. You know how some players just connect quickly - he and Shannon Larkin both got my attention in this general time frame. Even though his style was heavy, his influences such as Gadd or Copeland showed through (to me anyways). His fills are extremely interesting and live, he is a blast to watch. So on this particular tune, I wanted to stay in line with his vibe but my style will always be more bottom heavy (more footwork and less splash, stack action). BUT - I'm working on buying a splash cymbal 🤣🤣. In all seriousness, Chad is a drummer I really dig. I think he is a great talent and he is a very tasteful drummer. On top of all that, watch any of his personal videos and it's clear he'd be a great teacher and he has a passion for the history of drumming. I've got Sunday off again this week so I'll try to squeeze in some more as long as it's entertaining to y'all. As always, thank you all so very much for your support and kindness.

The difference between a musician and a drummer is that a musician doesn't just play.... they become the music. Watching you drum it is easy to see that when the music begins, you ascend space and time.... and for a few minutes.... you become the story of that song. Keep on doin what you do brother....

Wow......First off, what a killer band, killer fucking song and you did it such amazing justice. Thats the biggest thing I've always liked about you/your drumming, you have such respect for the music. You're intense, precise, never overplaying to the point its obnoxious. Right down the razor thin line of killer fucking beats and power. You killed it bro, you have what many drummers crave and will never obtain because they force it.......charisma. Killer drumming Trey, mad respect.
Marcus bro, that's some humbling stuff. Every time I go over to your channel, it's well worth it dude. I also have a ton of respect for you and you bring a smile to my face dude! Yo Don! Great observation my friend. Great hooks and verses help someone like me when we're learning a song or getting it to the point where we're comfortable with doing it. Seriously, the devil is in the details on this one and Chad Szeliga has a number of very tasteful fills. @@TreyBDrums The drummer Chad was on that album, and that's when BB really blew up. W/out Chads drum parts, I wouldn't have given it a listen. It goes to show how a drummer often makes, or beaks a band. You really did a great job on a very unorthodox tune. My wife loves your song selection, and vids. It's pretty cool. Hey Jamie - my apologies for running so behind on my replies on here. I'd have to include myself in that batch of people LOL! Not so much in that I thought they weren't heavy enough or anything like that. I just never really caught the wave of this era. But like a LOT of other songs I've covered on here that weren't really my thing, I find out really fast that so many of these drums tracks are incredibly unique. Granted, I never cover them in a truly regimented lick for lick manner but I do try to stay true to the essence on most of them. Anyways, I think Chad did a phenomenal job on this and honestly, it's a hell of a song with a hell of a hook. Appreciate you! 🙏🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘

@@TreyBDrums They have such a deep catalogue, great drummers on the different albums. Some favorites are "Diary of Jane"and "So Cold". You would do them justice 🤘

I love BB! And you nailed Chad's parts flawlessly! As I was watching your video (before I read the description), I said to myself "Trey plays alot like Shannon Larkin". So huge props for bringing two of my favorite drummers Chad Szeliga & Shannon Larkin into one of my favorite bands songs. How long did it take you to learn this track? It seems like a daunting task...
What is up bro!!! Man, I had a slight leg up on this one just because I liked the song when it came out. So it's been one of those that's been on various playlists for a long ass time. But even with that, once I laid it out to cover it still took an evening of playing through it and committing the approach to memory. One thing I've started doing is filming that aspect. I don't film when I'm just sitting and screaming "FUCK" or "I SUCK" over and over 🤣🤣. But, once I get a song where I'm going through it one take, then I can film it even if it's rough. Watching that back helps a big, big bunch because I can see / hear things that need to be corrected a bit faster. Hope you've been doing great my friend!!!

Yo Mike! Man, I was going to just do this one with the regular snare but I watched Chad do this in a clinic type setting and I couldn't tell if he was using a piccolo or if it was just a tom. Either way, it sounded bad ass so I just rolled out the 5.5 deep snare, tuned it high, threw it down on my left, turned those snares off & mixed it for that timbale type sound. He threw in some really tasty parts in this and I tried to pay attention to most of 'em anyway 🤣🤣. Diary of Jane? What do you think? That's a strong maybe for me right now - just curious how you think that might go over. I'm open to any other BB suggestions too dude! Appreciate you my friend

Hey Nick! No dude, not an insult in the least. Chad Szeliga is the type of drummer that goes against the grain of the songs I drift toward. He's so incredibly tasteful with his hands. For me, I am more of a bottom heavy drummer so you are spot on. This particular song has to come across as rigid in sections (if not the whole thing). But, the fact you were cool enough to sub and leave this awesome comment - bro, I'll take it. Awesome Trey! Chad Szeliga ? Is one of my favorite rock drummers! Such tasty drum parts that fit the songs perfectly. I like your interpretation with a few extra kick licks without straying from the core. I’m psyched to bring my 21 year old son to his first metal show this Fri and we are seeing BB at Mohegan Sun Arena here in CT. We used to live down the street from the Casino and being both big BB fans we are going to have a blast. I sprung for some great seats too. Watch for the pics coming up on FB this Fri night! That's awesome Mike! I did the same thing with my 16 year old son. In 2019 he wanted to see FFDP & Breaking Benjamin and so did I. I actually loved FFDP's performance, they were killer on stage.

@@TreyBDrums yeah man great show with Papa Roach! Was a bit disappointed watching Sean Foist though. He’s true to the albums but basically no showmanship and he was so far back on the stage the other members didn’t really interact with him….was like he was just a fill in guy ya know what I mean? He did have about a 5 minute drum solo which was pretty lame IMO as there was no structure to it and his rolls between hands and feet were sloppy…But I’m a critic of course! The music was tight and they played a good variety over about 2 hours though and it was awesome to be able to take my son since it was his first rock concert! Cheers Trey

I had to run it a few times to get the feel. It's a surprisingly deceptive tune in terms of difficulty. Or......maybe not difficulty as much as nuance. Dude - Considering that I'm running behind on our other tune, I saw this comment and IMMEDIATELY threw the drum track, the stems and the video onto my external drive. So if you want to cover this one, the drums are done and they are yours! And I do have this to a click as well so I can send you one with a click and then you'd obviously have the click free stereo file to put in. Yo Zax! Correct you are! And he did a fairly long stint with 'em if I'm not mistaken. I want to say he went into BLS around 2014 or maybe just before then. Great job brother. This song isn't that difficult to play, it is making the transition from one section to the next and using the correct sticking in order to execute it precisely.
That's an interesting point dude! This tune in retrospect does move from section to section breathing (no pun intended 🤣🤣) in its own way. It's a seemingly great example of how ultra chops aren't needed in creating what is best for the song. Not saying they're bad either. Just saying Chad is a drummer loaded with chops but he's laying back and letting the song come to him in this. I think I watched him doing this in clinics on here and the footage was older. But he is such a damn good drummer.

@@TreyBDrums your right, the song does come to him, he lays back, and the music unfolds. I notice when I want to go from section to section, just to be patient then do the fill. It's like the music sets up the fill instead of the fill setting up the music.
