    Always good to check out the old books for ideas. Watching your video it just hit me how I haven't used the cry me a river lick in a while. Time to practice, Thanks Tony.

    I think I’ve heard people say the first one is reminiscent of Count Basie’s intro riff on Honeysuckle Rose. Great video, thank you!

    Another great lesson, Tony. I dig your style. So at 4:07, you mentioned someone said you end every riff with those 2 notes a 4th apart. I had learned that this is the very definition of bebop. That you *must* end your phrase like that (or maybe a 3rd, too). Those two notes are supposed to sing "be-bop". Ever hear that?

    We called the 'bebop lick' "Indiana bebop" back at school in Cincinnati. 😆

    I’ll have to check out that book. I wish it had audio examples though. Jazz is a aural language!

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  2 года назад +1

      thats why reading is so helpful ... i can hear the examples just by looking at them. Many great musicians dont read so youtube is a great resource.

      @@TonyWinston Actually my problem is I read much better than I play by ear. I’m trying to make up for that now by learning everything by ear rather than “ cheating” and reading. Music is an aural art form after all.

    This is great. My weakest bit of piano playing is creating riffs/licks/solos. At least this gives me some idea where to start. (Non jazz - I know you teach classical too - My wife asked me to learn "Married Life" theme from the animated movie "Up". Well, I've found some sheet music and am doing quite well with it - I think it's a nice piece of music. Maybe your students would like it? In my experience it's great to be able to play music from Film and TV. If you play it for friends to hear they love it. It's even better when they are not sure where they know it from. "I know that music... that's the music from? Oh what is that from???" )

      @@davidvicari5139 only point in ignoring music is that you're listening to something else.

    I think the weirdest bebop lick taken from an old tune is from MAIRZY DOATS. I hear that quote all the time in Parker and other bebop. It's the total opposite of bop, but it still fits. The Honeysuckle Rose quote was the first "lick" I ever learned. But Mairzy Doats is the most random.

    "Miles Davis said once about Freddie Hubbard... he just runs up and down the scales" - where did you hear that Tony? It is an urban legend or is it documented somewhere?
