- As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases from links posted in my description & comments section. By popular demand we take a look at the Hyperkin HDTV cable for the Sega Genesis! Features 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio switch with 720p resolution. Confirmed compatible with the Model 2 Genesis only, the cord included is the wrong one for the Model 1, and I do not have a model 3 to test. OSSC footage was done at 2x lines to keep it simple and not as to completely highlight the OSSC... But it can do up to 5x lines, scanlines and tons of options.

does have terrible color tint as the pound version of the cable?
The colors are much darker... :(
i mean the pound cable
Good video! Did they improve that problem now in 2022?
@@GodofWarChuka I bought mine a month ago or so and no they didn't.
Retro gaming is becoming such an expensive hobby there's absolutely no excuse for Hyperkin to make costly errors.
Cool option for hooking it up to a HDTV. I personally still have all my retro consoles hooked up to my Sony CRT TV 👍
Mine? 40" XBR Sony Trinitron Wega, KV-40XBR800.
Thing of beauty. BIG beauty.
+Retro Force the 16:9 CRTs were the later HDTV widescreen CRTs about the same time the DLPs were out.
Mine is the earlier 4:3 CRT @ 720p/1080i.
Thick glass to withstand the vacuum to maintain a flat screen, the thing weighs over 300 lbs.
@@SwankeyMonkey Thanks for the reply man. I decided to look it up earlier. Good stuff 👍
To collect crt you need to learn how to repair then or have a bunch of then as back up
@@85fabricio The day when my Sony CRT TV breaks down I'll drop it off to the recycling center and buy another one. For my next Sony CRT TV I'm thinking of buying the PVM model.
Seems to be good for the $30. It'll work well for eventually getting all my systems hooked up at once. Whatever doesn't get a decent hdmi adapter can just use component cables.
The dark output of the Hyperkin cable really rubs me the wrong way. Think I'll stick to getting an OSSC.
I've noticed a huge difference for both streaming, and just playing, by having my JVC X'Eye hooked up via Euro-SCART cable to the OSSC, and using a 5x setting to get a beautiful, crisp 1080P picture. It looks and sounds amazing. But that's a lot of cash to lay out for simply playing games, unless you have to have the best picture and sound options. In that sense, it might almost be worth buying a Mega SG, unless you need 32X support. Even so, I understand that the OSSC is made for a hobbyist like me, not so much for the general market consumer. Most general market folks will see a product like this and easily pay $30 for the product that can inexpensively make their old Genesis work on their new TV, and look reasonably good doing it. It probably won't seem like it's that much different than what they experienced via RF or even Composite as a kid, and that's probably okay. It's a "good enough" product for its intended use case and target market.
The 32x Virtua racing and Earthworm Jim had noticable difference. But at 30 bucks... Not bad.
I have this exact same cable that I just received a couple days back. Glad you made a video and talked about it. Personally I Love it and think it does an incredible job for $30. I haven't seen any real issues with it and even the 16:9 feature is good, as I thought the picture would have been overly stretched, but it seems good. The only issue I did notice was the small flicker at the bottom (below the screen) but even that seems to be there even with other alternatives. I say well worth the $30.
Yeah the junk on the bottom of the screen has always been there... No matter the solution... Even back in the day... But we didnt see that stuff due to the overscan and not being rendered in the visible play area of our tvs. This is just how the Genesis works. Im used to it and know via the OSSC you can make adjustments to make it not visible but ive never bothered lol.
Also another thing that was not mentioned about these cables, for 240p content these cables interpret it as 480i so you will see lines disappear on an object when it is in motion as well as other graphical anomalies.
For me the HD-Retrovision is the best looking cable only solution (if you can ever find them in stock) but if I was going to spend anything like $300 then I'd get an Analogue Mega SG and be done with it.
Genesis/Megadrive is my favourite console. Love the original hardware, but that slight audio buzz during a pause is a real thing. Heard it when I used to plug headphones into my Model 1.
You know it might not be perfect but going from using composite to this looks very nice.I love that Hyperkin is adding the 4:3 to 16:9 switch for authentic feel of retro gaming. Pound how hard was that to add this switch in your products for our retro gaming needs? Not perfect but a good start in the right direction.😉
Yeah but they dropped the ball on their ps1/ps2 cable which has no aspect ratio switch and is forced widescreen. Which is weird cause their wii hdmi is 4:3
Looks like the Hyperkin doesn't de-interlace, the footage is jumpy sometimes and you can see the combing artifacts in stuff that flickers quickly, like Sonic's forcefield.
I think I agree with most people. For the price it does a job. It isn't perfect but would be good enough for most people to play their original hardware on a modern TV. I'd buy one.
This helped greatly. I’ve been trying to find Hyperion hdmi videos for a while to see the quality. Thank you very much. :)
I look forward to seeing them fix the model one issue since that is the same cable that works with the Master System
It's weird not hearing you say the words "soulja" and "boy" in a video. But I would love to get that cable for my original megadrive.
Not bad at all! Most gamers with model 1 will already have that short cable adapter game on.
Hard to see on my tiny phone, but one thing I noticed was the lack of detail in the clouds in the sonic comparison. I mean you could spend over $100 to do the same thing that the hyperkin cable does, but if your tv can do 240p over component then pay $30 more for the hd retrovision cables, done. I only have 2 tvs in my house that work with the hd retrovision cables. I am really amped about the genesis mini coming out though. I will throw my money at that!
Yea man, the problem is the tv capatibility with those retro hd cables. None of my tvs can support them, which is a real heart break :/.
The Shadowgate Keeper yeah I hear you. Plus some tvs are killing off component inputs all together. My 2 tvs out of 5 that work are an Apex tv I bought years ago and my Sony PlayStation 3d monitor. I would not recommend the sony ps monitor as ghosting is terrible on it. I hold out hope that sony tvs would have higher compatibility than other brands. I have access to a 55nx810 I could test too, but I havent gotten around to it. I just tried poking around for a compatibility list without success. My next tv to buy will be the 2016 sony z9d because I loved my ps3, and that is one of the last 3d tvs. I want to replay some of my favorite games in 3d now. Plus I will hold a candle for the hope that it will jive well with my hd retrovision cables. Another hope would be those wii2hdmi adapters. I saw a couple diy og xbox to hdmi using the component output to the wii2hdmi board, but I was never impressed with the quality of the image. I have a couple of the sewell wii2hdmi which I could mess with. The plan was to mate it to a powered component switch. I am just not sure what power the wii2hdmi would need to function. Sorry for the long reply.
Did not know that Hyperkin was making an HDMI cable for the Sega Genesis! Hope they can make one for the N64 and GameCube at some point! The one they made for the Wii is fantastic!!
They are making one that supports snes, n64, and gamecube which outputs an svideo quality image upscaled to 720p.
In my opinion the only good cable they made was the wii one lol, everyone cable after that has been incredibly disappointing.
Really nice review! Thanks!
That tower of power looks clean af!
Thank you for the tip about the Model 1 Cable Adaptor. Your videos are excellent btw.
Thanks for the video Pixel, well presented and informative as always.
I just have one question, do you think these cables work better then the Hyperkin Mega Retron HD? I prefer using my model 1 over some 3rd party box, but I cant tell which is better to go with of the two (especially because of the model 1 cable issue youve mentioned). Any thoughts?
Thanks mucho!
Yes I do feel the results are a lot better with these cables than the Mega Retron, sound is better and visuals are better for sure... Since we are using real hardware. The mega retron is not a horrible device... But original hardware will always beat it out and these cables do an ok job.
@@Madlittlepixel Thanks a lot, ill keep my eye on it and see if they ever update about the model 1 cable issue
Well, now I want an OSSC. Those games looked GREAT on that thing!
That was just with like default settings at 2x lines. Ossc can do up to 5x lines and tons of other options including scanlines.
@@Madlittlepixel Damn! 5x is crazy. I wonder what it can do for PS2...
We have the exact same Genesis setup down to the 8bitdo controller and the OSSC audio adapter cable.
Awesome setup! Quality~
Hyperkin does make sharp looking boxes. Thanks for the video. I definitely want an ossc, but this might be a good stopgap for some.
Very anxious to check this cable out, cause my OSSC makes problems especially when using my Model 1 Genesis with my Sega CD 2.
Oh God, i hope Hyperkin makes one of those for SNES and N64, it would be amazing!!
JMGO Extra they do. Just reviewed it the other day. Colors are Ok but not great. Looked at it exclusively on the N64.
The OSSC has a more of a green-yellow tint (which is going to have a brighter image)..... Where the Hyperkin has more of a blue tint (which is going to have a darker image)... I do prefer the darker image (Hyperkin) the colors look better in my opinion on a hyperkin.
why, how did hyperkin bundle a funky cable for G1? Maybe a revision one day?
If I had these HDMI cables for all my retro consoles, then my issue is that I'd have to buy yet another HDMI switch. I bought the RetroTink specifically to avoid that and just use RCA switchers into that.
Interesting enough that I just ordered this cable. It'll be here by Wednesday!
You will like it. Let us know if you experience any color issues because what I see seems good enough. The picture is clear and crisp and looks way better than the Original composite cables that came with the system.
@@JBLmobileG1
I'll let you know when they'll arrive.
UPDATE:
The cables are fantastic!!!
I have a model 1 Genesis, so thanks for the heads up, I was about to buy it... what would you recommend for me to purchase that wont break the bank?
You can get this adapter, just buy a model 1 to model 2 adapter as well.
@@zzzhuh I bought the hyperkin HDMI and it came with the adapter. 👍
This is a good excuse to bust out my Sega Genesis, but even though its a model 2, I might wait for a revision anyways. Plus I'm planning on getting the Genesis Classic too.
What about control latency? There has to be an analogue to digital conversion which consumes milliseconds and makes the display lag behind controller input. Just curious.
I like the Mega SG footage at the end, because all I kept thinking about was how the Mega SG looks better than the cables and OSSC for an HDMI solution.
Haha yeah... had to put some of that in there as well!
Please also review the hyperkin snes/n64/gcn hdmi cable when that one releases next
I give people what the want when I can... so sure why not... that will be an interesting one.
@@Madlittlepixel im a little frustrated their ps1/ps2 hdmi cable lacks these newer aspect ratio switches. Honestly forced widescreen for me is a deal breaker and i dont get why its like that by default when their wii hdmi cable is still 4:3. Hyperkin quality is all over the place
Thank you for making these useful videos!
the screen shakes with the hyperkin cable almost like juttering or something..you can see it on the water line if you watch that part and compare both cables
glad you noted the problem with the first version... what is the solution...don’t have a second version... and what about the CDX?
Well you could build an adapter from U to C shaped connector, build your own connector cable with the correct big plug, or mod the one that's included.
YASYTU don’t have the knowledge or ability to make one
Maybe just wait a while and they'll fix it. :-)
The CDX uses the Gen 2 connector.. so no problem there.
The shield in Sonic 2 and the drop shadow 240p test show how awful this is: instead of interpreting the video signal as 240 progressive lines @ 60Hz it's treating it as 480 interlaced lines at 30Hz. Flickering things like the shield and the drop shadow don't flicker, instead they look stripped (line on, line off). This is terrible for games, as it greatly affects the smoothness of animations and scrolling. If you care about your retro games at all, don't use this.
Quess I stick to my scart rgb cable. But for for 30 bucks it's OK I think.
Man you just saved me alot of money. I only own a model 1 mega drive, and i dont want to break it.
Thanks this helped setting my cable up
That really blows about the model 1 adapter. The model 1 uses the same connector as the Sega Master System so, in theory, you could hook up a Master System to an HDTV with it which would be an added bonus if they did it correctly.
Yeah, i was looking at this for my sms
@ 1:50 I have no idea how you got those pins to line up and connect fully black to black like that. I can’t get it all the way in. I’ve bought two of these and one from another brand. So spent total about $100 on these cables and all 3 have had the problem. I’m not dumb, lol. Wife can’t do it either and she’s way smarter than me mechanically.
Thank you so much for the intention put in this video.
Visuals look a bit darker but I wonder if turning up the brightness on the TV would help it....
I wondered the same
Yes adjusting the brightness/contrast etc will get better results. I adjusted via software to see how it looked and not bad but I typically dont record that kind of stuff as I want to showcase the product how it works for a typical user.
I was wondering about this. The HDMI cable certainly looked better than expected. But I'm just gonna roll with the HD Retrovision cable and Retrotink 2x.
I can’t see the point when the normal av cable does the job
Yeah the basic AV cable does the job... but trust me... you notice the difference on an HDTV with this cable. It looks so much cleaner and sharper.
I have my mega drive hooked up to a 50 inch tv does the job fine
Would like to see the results when working with a Sega Master System.
Okay I have a quick question. Did you have sound problems when using the hyperkin cable? Best way to describe it would be a screeching sound. It was much worse when using the Sega CD.
Hyperkin aren't the most reliable... heck their supaboy wave1 and wave2 had issues where the inductor got so hot, it melted the back of the casing. had it happen twice. they wouldn't accept a return either. I would stick with good'ol RGB modding. nothing beats genuine scan lines.
dont expect much is only 30 dollars .still have the saturn and sega genesis connected in svideo on a bravia sony lcd from 2006 and it looks better the hyperkin hdmi cable outputs a darker look maybe it depends on the tv your using
Where did you get the HDRV model 1 cable from? While I have the 5 pin AV cable for model 1, I'm not sure if it's exactly the right cable seeing how the model 1 av port has all 8 pin holes.
The semi good news is that if you have a 32X, then using a model 1 Genesis won't matter since you are connecting it to the 32X anyway, which using the same connection as the Model 2 Genesis.
Thanks for the adapter warning
The clouds in the Sonic 2 footage lost all of it's shading and detail using the Hyperkin cable. Yuck.
Good video thanks, I just got a Megadrive model 1 recently, trying to find the best way to use is +wire it up etc. It didn’t come with the SEGA RF adapter. Just the one RF cable (with the white coloured end) … wondering if I should get this HDMI adapter and is this the best solution. And if so, do I also need another cable to plug into the audio in? (at the front of the console) Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for the upload. How are these cables used with a Majesco Genesis model 3? I can't get the Hyperkin version to output any picture at all. Everything is working fine.
doesn't look as good as the YPbPr w/ OSSC, but for just 30 dollars you can't complain. wonder if there was any difference in input lag
Nick Bilello if nothing else it’s an acceptable backup solution.
But the cable coming out of the 32x is a model 2 cable right?
Yep! If you have a 32x you're good.
Great! Now it's exactly like running an emulator on your PC. I can understand these gadgets are useful for video capturing purposes but for playing? What about the good old graphics? That's what's retro gaming is IMO.
Hello there my friend. I had a question. Would this cable work with the Sega cdx? Not sure if it has the same connection as the model 1 or model 2. Thanks in advance!
The only issues I see are with the -deinterlacing and the contrast. The whites are a bit blown out (look at the clouds in the games and you can see more shading and such), and the imagine is like 10% darker. If they could fix those two issues in a later revision, this could be a steal.
It works for neo geo aes
i have one of these cables
michael kovatch thanks for this info. bought!
How's the lag? Was the sound a little off?
Sound wasnt really off.. Maybe slightly lower than the hdr cable. Lag I had around 5 frames of lag with the Hyperkin. Mite not bother some. With the ossc and hdr through the tv I capture it was around 2-3 frames of lag. Your TV will contribute to the lag, even using game mode doesnt completely remove it.
I can't even find an HDretrovision OSSC 2x. Guess I'll get the Hyperkin cable. Shame. I wanted a brighter picture.
My question is, will nothing get rid of the buzzing sound? It even happens with my scart cables..is this just something with old consoles
Awesome review man! That's a shame about the Sega Genesis model 1 cable :-(
How well does the Hyperkin cable work withGames like Street Fighter 2, NHL ‘94 or Tecmo Super Bowl as they use a special 256x244 rendering that makes the screen shimmer and show horizontal lines on the Hyperkin Megaretron HD
I just brought a sega cd 2nd gen with 2nd gen sega system this will help me play on my 70inch in HD .. I hope..
I didn't understand which is the problem with the Sega Genesis 2 to Sega Genesis 1 cable adapter provided by Hyperkin: is it the size of the pins, the disposition of them, or the internal pinout connection is not right?
Oh, Hyperkin. I guess it does the job.
To be fair, it doesn't seem to have flicker issues like a composite-HDMI adapter I've played with.
I would rather pay more for better quality. Hdretrovision all the way.
This seems geared more so towards those with modern tv's that lack component inputs. That and hdmi is a single plug. Convenience over quality i guess
Damn it, I only have the model 1!
You can get the 32X model 1 adapter cable and use it instead.
What is that power cable you have that powers all three? Very interested in one!
Picked one of these up from eBay only last month, new sealed and was quite inexpensive, purely for use to capture some MegaDrive. The MK1 convertor cable it came with was now correct a Din8 262 U config, unlike the Din8 270 C config shown here, looks like it got revised.
Cuz some stuff like the HD retrovision cables don't even work with your newer TVs you have to get some kind of upscaler like the Retro Tinker because I was using something like the GBS 8200 and that wasn't even upscaling it enough to work on a newer TV. I just want to make my connection simple so this would be a good solution
I'm watching on my phone... phone
Is showing video in 144p 😂
I carnt tell the difference 🙄 lpl
With this 240/480 issue of lines being missing, is that something which isn't an issue on rca composite cables? I have the choice of hyperkin or rca for my speedrunning and I'm wondering if the dirty cheap option might be better for me.
My current setup is a gen1 with Sega CD and 32x and I output from 32x output to scart cable to an HDMI adapter box then to my stereo. Picture quality is amazing. But I am curious how this hyperkin would compare to the scart adapter HDMI setup.
Modded Xbox with pound HDMI cable much better
You could place a Mcable on there for $#!+s and giggles. Would love to do that myself just wrestling with the idea of spending a little over $100 more... Pound does make solid cables for xbox.
the Mcable does work...a solid investment
First thing that happens to packaging if I get this: it goes in the recycling. I may be taking a risk at not being able to sell this years from now after its appreciated in the vintage market, but I'm ok with it.
I knew this wasn't gonna be good..., it absolutely PERFECT!..works for me!🙃
What do the controls feel like? Is there any input lag? That is one of the biggest killers for me when trying to play games i grew up playing on console on a crt, to HD TV playing various ways of emulation using wired/wireless controllers. I just can stand it and quit with in minutes
Would this Hdmi cable work with Retrovision's Saturn adapter?
So at around 10 minutes, does that mean that the hyperkin cable is not processing the 240p signal properly?
I wonder if it works on the Wondermega/X'Eye.
I have a model 2 Mega Drive. Since it comes with a cable meant for the model 1, do you have to buy another cable for the model 2?
No, it comes with an adapter cable for the model 1, just don't use that one then.
Stupid question, is there any other model 1 to model 2 video adapter one can replace that one with?
Hyperkin has a snes cable too...accordin to the box it will play n64.i dont see how but i hope u review that cable as well..
Snes n64 and gamecube used the same output socket
@@forbidtuna it has the same output but they took the rgb out of the n64..most of these hdmi cables only work on rgb systems.im.i have a n64 i cant wait too see the review..my snes and n64 share the same cable on my crt..n64 still dont look great even on my crt..im crossin my fingers that tje hdmi cable will be good..
It wont output in rgb, itll output an svideo quality image because all 3 consoles supported it and hyperkin is more concerned with compatibility than quality
@@ians_parksthanks ian..i cant wait too see the reviews for this cable.
How do I get my Sega Genesis mini to look like this? I plug the HDMI to my Samsung but the games are still pixelated... I want it to look like this... I’ve messed around with my settings on my tv but have had no luck 😢
So Is this hyper skin cable ok to hook up to the model 2? Without damaging it?
Thanks for talking about the adapter cable, it has been so hard to get it to work on my model 1 and I get nervous every time I try to get it to work... Guess I'll have to get a new adapter. How can I get the right one?
The 32X model 1 to Model 2 cable is pretty cheap on eBay
@@CardboardSliver I actually need the model 2 to model 1 Genesis cable.... Can't find it anywhere...
I'll keep my Mega SG.
I have a problem that after a little while all the white gets like a purple hue
I wonder if this would work with my RGB mods on other systems that use the genesis output for scart?
The model one adapter is accidentally for a Neogeo? or at least in that shape? Does it actually work on that system with the adapter or is that dangerous?
It works on the Neo Geo just fine. Ill be doing a quick video showing that later. Some people have used the model 1 cable for their model 1 Genesis, but it winds up bending the pins, can damage the din connector on the Genesis, so Id not risk it on the model 1.
