#SegaCD #MegaSD #FPGA - Игры
MegaSD does what Everdon't.
Mega ED is still an amazing flashcart. I paid $39 for a brand new Mega ED X3 during the last sale, and it plays every Genesis/MD game (aside from VR, same as this flashcart), every SMS, every 32X, most GG games converted to SMS.
So $39 for a cart which plays 93% of the entire collection, or another $231 more to play another 6%. It's a tough sell. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Krikzz announce his own Mega ED w/ Sega CD support since he's moving onto more powerful FPGA chips for his line of flashcarts.
Mmmm... competition.
Except for the fact that it doesn't have a USB port, which is key for game development (which I and many others do), unless he just forgot to show and mention it in this review.
VideoGameObsession Yeah, but save slots... I had the hours to spare to complete these games back in the 90s... not so much today.
Mega Everdrive Pro
Hey! You still don't own a SEGA CD?
What are you waiting for, Nintendo to make one?
we didn't need that kind of adverts in the UK as SEGA owned Nintendo over hear at one point you was considered uncool if you don't own a SEGA or some kind of Home Computer for gaming as all other platforms considered inferior wasnt until the mid life of the snes more people started buying Nintendo
i understood the reference
arranmc182 Sega had the “cool” image in the USA too, you know. They were neck and neck for most of their life and Nintendo didn’t really pull ahead until the end... when Sega was moving on anyway while confusing people about their intentions to support the Genesis in the USA.
Don't let this guy mislead you! The Turbo Duo was the first game system on the market and many games were on the Duo first, why Sherlock Holmes was released almost 2 years earlier on the Duo. Also you need to buy a Genesis console in addition the Sega CD while the Duo has games such as Gates of thunder which have the arcade feel.
@@arranmc182 sego do what nintendont
ghouls and ghosts is definitely the correct game to show whilst talking about save states!
Right.
Once again, wonderful review! Thank you for your time and energy you put into your videos! Keep them up!
Imagine bringing one of these, or an everdrive back to the 90s
its 30 years too late
Especially considering the prices of games back in the day. A lot of the time, towards the end of the 16-bit generation, the software could cost just as much or more than the base system. If an MD was 90-100US to buy a core system, there were games in the range of 70-100 depending on how large they were if they included special chips. Luckily, we also had a lot of 20-30US discount software that were major sellers.
If you traveled back in time in the 90’s…it is real risky! If Sega finds out you have one of these everdrives they will not hesitate to charge you a real hefty fine and a stop piracy letter along with
@@ilovemybeard3394 Give them something that will change the scope of computing if you have something brand new and they'll forget about the fine.

True that agreed
MVG is really good at showing products that I'll use one day when I have a lot of disposable income, lol.
Wow, $300? Guess they were trying to emulate the Sega CD price too.
I was just about to leave a comment on that. What a fantastic idea. But I feel the price tag could be at least half as much.
Yeah let's replace hardware that degrades over time with more hardware that will degrade over time. Emulation is the only way to go with classic games. Stop giving these guys money.
Stop complaining I'm gonna buy it you should too 🤷
@@nirv lmao. It's designed for enthusiasts. It costs a lot of money simply because fpga chips are expensive.
Hurr horf oh no someone makes profits off a product designed to cater to a marker HURRRRR that badddddd
@@Woodenspade You sure are a smart ass. I bet you're the kind of person who's so cocky and arrogant on the internet but when interviewed in voice, you'd mysteriously not know anything about video games.
1:56 Sega cd also has no drm or security, you can literally burn Sega cd games to a blank cdr and it'll boot it
That's what I did with my model 2 Sega CD
Yep.
And if you mod your Megadrive/Genesis to play all regions, you don't even need to mod the CD, just patch the game when you burn for the region of your CD drive, and then change the region on the MD/Gen when the Sonic screen is on. It's how I play Sega CD games on my Megadrive with an unmodded MegaCD.
@@TigerTailsTV You can modify the music in games by replacing a .wav file that is the same length so it fits the .cue.....
It works but you need to know what you are doing.
Nice. Buy it. Copy it. Sell the original.
Be careful, Terraonion relocated to Andorra without telling the buyers. When the pre-orders went online, it was written tax-free and the company was located in Spain. Then they silently announced 2 months later, after having shipped everything, that they were actually located in Andorra. Everyone in Europe has to pay between 70 and 90 euros taxes to get the Mega SD. This is a very bad move from them and a straight insult to people supporting them despite the already high price of the product.
£55 import tax to the UK. However, as of January 2020, that’s going to be a moot point, as we’ll be paying similar on European imports.
the creator of terraonion attacked krikkz for being a crisis actor in the war on ukraine so i dont think i'll support them anytime soon

Yeah great product. But I thought the same. Way too expensive. You can buy an original system and just burn games and have money left over
Still a couple rare cd games would cost that in itself. As long as u get the roms free somewhere it could be worth it
Yeah, that's too much! I'm happy with my $39 Mega Everdrive, and model 1 Sega CD, which still works great.. For now anyway. I paid $50 for it in 2001 when very few people cared about it.
11:30 "What else can I say about the Mega SD?"
That it does what Nintendon't, obviously.
Great video, quick (yet thorough) and to the point! This product looks awesome. I don't think I'm going to invest in one anytime soon (my Model 2 and pack of CDrs are still holding up at the moment), but I can definitely see myself upgrading eventually just for the convenience and other interesting features (CD music with cartridge games for instance, that OutRun example with the arcade soundtrack was awesome!).
This is a dope channel, and that intro tune on top
0:56 Pitfall The Mayan Adventure.. This game is sooo goood...

Dude, your intro music is freaking awesome!!!!
Отличный обзор! 👍
я не ожидал что вообще такой картридж-устройство будет, сразу видно лицензионная вещь.
Still have my original genesis model 2. I just recently picked up a little 13 inch crt tv I found at a trash receiver place and it works so well. Finally have a good crt to play retro games!
Nice! Retro games never look authentic on an LCD. CRT is definitely the way to go.
@@angolin9352 My ps2 and ps1 also look even better on it :)

My man!
I see a new video drop I hit like!
Great video, this is something I am considering
Now this is freaking awesome! I hope one for the Sega Saturn ends up getting made!
There is one in development and it has been for some time google the Satiator from Prof Abrasive, he's the chap that cracked the Saturns copy protection a few years ago :D
@@MatSpeedle I remember watching his video, but I couldn't remember who the YTer was. I thought for sure that he had dropped the project since it's been a good while since I last heard anything.
DarXide google Sega Saturn Phoebe - I own one and it's FANTASTIC! The guy making them is from Poland, but everything is in English. Stupid people complain about how he has trouble meeting demand, but he's a small operation and if you just watch his blog on his website, you'll be able to snag one of this things on your first attempt - just make sure to use a computer and not your phone.
I would love to play Pen and Teller Smoke and Mirrors on my Genesis. This is epic.
Thanks for the review.
Another item to add to my wishlist.
Awesome unit, thanks for the review. Will place one on order along with a AnalogSG.
Would be cool if they implemented the 32x to it one day
Setting aside emulation. This is honestly an amazing thing for preservation and archiving since by this point you spent how much on your cd collection? Rip to iso or bin/cue and you never have t otouch the discs again.
Looking forward to what the MD+ Format will give. I mean fine yes the 'crunchy' sound from the genesis is iconic, but being able to extend things a bit is always a nice option to breath new life into old classics.
I found this video while looking for prices on a SEGA cd.
I was about to begin collecting on it.
Thank god I waited this long.
You swayed me when you tried to put the cartridge in the CD Drive hahaha.
Double points for actually closing the lid on it @ the end hahaha.
What's stopping this stuff becoming just as rare as the original hardware in future? Is it open-source?
this niche product is going to be hard to find years from now. Buy now or forget it.
Can't wait to play Thunder Force IV with all those remixed death metal songs on youtube.
Cant wait to play final fight cd and fatal fury special
Impressive is an unserstatement for this neat little cart.
Great easy to understand review. We are definitely original hardware guys but with the price of some great mega cd games I’m thinking about buying the mega SD. Thanks for review
I bought snatcher for £80 15 years ago - when i sold my mega cd not long after I accidentally left the disc in the drive, so now I have an empty Snatcher case :(
Oh man.... sounds like if it wasn’t for bad luck you’d have no luck at all.
Hi. Do you want to sell the empty snatcher box? Id be interested
@@camposjoao28 i have no idea what it's worth - have you got a loose CD then?
FPGAs are amazing. You take a chip, and then you tell it to become a sega cartridge, and bam, there you have it.
I love all the hardware available that makes playing on original hardware viable.
Wow! As a retro gamer I can say it's amazing thing! Definitely buy one!
Sega forgot to implement a copy protection into the Sega CD, which in the later years made CD-R's come in handy.
yup. Has region protection, though. Odd that it has one but not both given the era it's from.
Home based cdr drives just didn't exist back then. Heck it didn't even become common until well past the systems death. Pulling down a 300-600mb game and being able to burn it was an expensive cutting edge kind of thing. I paid something ridiculous like $500 for an scsi burner back around the psx days. Downloading games was such a pain that I used to pay people in various foreign countries via western union money transfer. For around $5 a disc I could get a pressed copy with color artwork on the disc, and a color printed front/back cover. It was wonderful being able to play every import I wanted in a time that importing games from Japan was uncommon and hideously expensive.
@@TheRealGara reminds me of the days I bought bootleg DBZ VHS tapes at a local shop for like friggin $10 per 2-3 eps
I believe the first copy protected game console was the PlayStation. And that’s Sony for you.
It was released in 1991. The cost of a CD-writer was over $1400 at the time, and a single blank CD-R was over $10 each. Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money just to copy a game when it was cheaper to just buy it outright? By the time prices came down the Sega CD was already out of production.
The MD+ feature sounds awesome. Hopefully some ROM hackers embrace it, I'd love to do some soundtrack arranges and put my 90s music gear to good use!
Great review, thanks for posting!
This is a great development. I would definitely want to buy one of these for my Genesis.
Too damn expensive!!
@Maycon Cruz It uses the same FPGA chip as the sd2snes, it shouldn’t be this expensive, but they have a monopoly on this so they can charge whatever they want. It would be cheaper and make more sense to buy a Mister FPGA board and play the games on there.
Hey! You still don't own a Mega SD?
What are you waiting for, Analogue or krikzz to make one?
gnadenlos I think Krikzz said he might. It was in a tweet, though.
do the math aka check your money
@@ongakuwotabeta Hopefully this will get him to lower prices.
You know it's going to happen and it'll drive the prices down. Those CYCLONE V FPGAs are now around $36 in bulk. I understand there is more to it than just that, but most reviewers as quick to menrion the "powerful FPGA tech" after telling you the price. There is little reason to charge $270 for this. $150 should allow for a nice profit while giving the customer a break.
Speaking of reviews, I also wish they would stop listing the price of current Sega CD games "being $400+" as a reason to why this will pay for itself. ISOs and roms are worthless. You can also burn Sega CD games on a $.30 blank CD.
Wait for retail phase, i think it will be near 150$, when more peoples will buy it.
Awesome! I will buy it! Thanks for your reviews!
What a time to be alive. I'm strongly considering plunking down the cash for the Mega SG and SD. What a combo.

I think this was very entertaining! Thank you for another great episode :)
love your work years and years back, and love it today in your videos. forgive me if you've mentioned it before, but, were you involved much in the dreamcast scene? i'd be curious to know with which devs you worked and whatnot
It doesn't really matter because it's too expensive for what it does.
Sour grapes much....
Great video as always! However if this is a preview unit not representing final product then why the video is titled as "Review" and not "Preview"?
The cartridge he has is the final shipping hardware identical to what customers will receive. However the shell on shipping cartridges will be slightly darker, with a thicker plastic. Also, he didn't have the color manual and box as those are being printed right now. So he is reviewing final hardware.
@@TerraonionSL He says around 2:20 that it's a preview unit, with final one being available in August. To what extent it's a preview unit and what's specifically finalized was not mentioned in the video.
Awesome channel. Unlike many kept talking about death of saturn on and on and on.
I think it would be really interesting if you talked something about the Saturn in a future video, as the hardware is super complex and kinda fun to talk about.
Maybe I just missed it but how does it handle multiple disc games like Dracula Unleashed and Night Trap?
There is an option to switch game discs in the menu. There are a few vids on this, so I'm not sure which one I saw that tested in, but it does work.
This indeed looks like the best flashcart ever, I'm all down for a Sega CD ODE! But wait.... It doesn't fit inside of the Sega CD itself? Thanks for the heads up, that's definitely a big dealbreaker...

This is a really cool idea. I myself never bought a Sega CD for my Genesis because I didn't wanna deal with the bulky mess and reliability issues that the drives can have. I've always used Kega Fusion as my Sega CD. It even plays my physical games in real time!
You left out a MAJOR issue with the 32x. With it connected you lose all ability to play CD-based games. You can only play cartridge ROMs
Wow is this true?!

C'mon dude, you're an Aussie like myself. Call it a Megadrive. Good video.
It is quite annoying having something you have always known as Mega Drive being called Genesis 😀 😩 it’s not a Phil Collins/bible computer!!!
at that price its almost 350nzd i would rather just use an emulator
Always a great vid 👍👍
Now I can finally play Snatcher!!!
Just remember, don't buy it used or cloned. Terraonion will tie firmware updates to serial numbers and you'll need the email address of the original purchase to get updates.
First 🤣 seriously though an FPGA cartridge.. I've been into emulation since the early 90s (and heard of it long before then, it just wasn't viable on slow 80s hardware)... But this sort of tech is really impressive!
FPGA is a mean of fit all circuit board of original sega cd (including mentioned motorolla chip). Because fpga is made from 14 (or 28) nm nodes it can fit whole board of sega that was made with 130 or so nm techprocess.
In conclution: this is NOT an emulation (by software), it is real hadware but in a small package. Same goes for Analogue consoles.
@@vadnegru yeah I know it's hardware emulation, , I was just saying it's amazing and pretty clever that they put FPGA onto a cart
I'm glad you compared the price to the Mega EDX7. A lot of the comments seem to compare it to an X3 just to highlight the price difference. The X3 definitely has good compatibility and does the job, but the X7 and MegaSD have several other quality of life additions and increased compatibility that make each of them worth their asking prices to me.
I have a MegaSD since i've never had the desire to own a Sega CD console, but did want to experience some of the games. Considering there are a handful of individual Sega CD games that are excellent and cost more than the MegaSD by themselves, I felt it was a good investment to not only have access to all of Sega CD, but also multiple other Sega console libraries. It's a nice product and it's also helped me cut back on scouring Ebay for physical genesis carts, which is nice to save money and have more space.
This is cool but I love having the actual hardware. I bought one on eBay for like 20 dollars and got the fuse fixed and BAM. Love that laser grinding away lol
But 32XCD games don't work. I think we still need an Analogue Sega CD adapter on MD's side.
PS.: When they create one.
Exactly, I want an all in one Masters,Genesis,32X,CD, cart.....the chips have gotten much smaller these days, somebody make it happen.....
I don't think any current consumer priced FPGA can handle 32-bit calculations just yet. It may be a few years away, but I'd love to see Analogue release an FPGA based Sega CD add-on, which could allow you to either play games from SDcard, or from an optional USB 3.0 portable optical drive. Those currently sell for as low as $18 brand new and arent much larger than a CD jewel case. It could sit perfectly under the Mega Sg itself. A nice visual throwback to the model 1 Genesis / Sega CD as well.
@@videogameobsession Consumer-priced FPGAs can most certainly handle cores that perform 32-bit calculations. There's nothing special about that support. Every FPGA out there can handle such cores. Keep in mind, FPGAs don't perform any calculations themselves. The merely provide a gate array that is field programmable (meaning the end user can reprogram it--"in the field", meaning wherever the customer is located). The cores define the gate arrays, and the cores can use more gates in their definition to perform calculations at higher bit width. Even the cheapest FPGA available today has enough gates to create a CPU that performs 512-bit SIMD calculations (like AVX-512 on the latest Intel Core chips), or theoretically unlimited bit width. You don't have to implement an ALU of the same bit width as you wish to perform calculations at with your ISA. As an example, the Z80 was an 8-bit internal CPU, meaning it had an 8-bit internal bus and registers and it performed calculations on 8-bit operands. However, it used a multiplexed 4-bit ALU. The same can be done to perform 32-bit calculations using 8x multiplexing. Or any other bit width ALU could be multiplexed. With an FPGA some cores use a single adder circuit (1-bit), and cycle the 32 bits (or other number of bits) through, thus allowing for a simpler, smaller circuit at the expense of performance. I'm not sure if any cores have multiplexed a 1-bit ALU to perform 32-bit calculations, but it's theoretically possible.
Just going on data that was said by the ones programming in Verilog. The current Cyclone V FPGA was said to have used up around 70% of its logic on just the 8-bit Z-80, 16-bit Motorola 68K, Yamaha audio, and the rest. I didn't see how it could be possible to fit a dual 32-bit Hitachi CPU + 4 more co-processors on an affordable consumer grade FPGA. consumer grade being like current prices of Cyclone V tech.
Technically 32X CD games will work (if you have a 32X and aren't using an Analogue Mega Sg) but you'd need an expansion port adapter. TerraOnion have said they'll make them if there's enough interest.
Way too expensive.
Lords of Thunder. Mang, I was not ready to headbang when i clicked this video. 9:37
This is awesomeness ✌️👀
An FPGA flash cart in an FPGA clone console... it's like the ship of Theseus. Is it even still considered playing Mega Drive? :D
Well, not really. FPGA is just emulation, ultimately. Posh and expensive emulation but, nevertheless, emulation.
for that price, you're better off just buying a sega cd
Thanks for sharing, I’ll make a decision based off of your opinion.
Cool background music in the beginning, what song is that? Great review by the way
Just what I have been waiting for. Good price point in my opinion.
Apart from the downsides of handling 32X features, this is really amazing.
The price is too big a barrier for entry for me. An actual Mega-CD is cheaper and you can just download disc images and burn them to CD-R and they run on the actual hardware with no modification
With 2019 patience have fun with the load times, plus CDs break down and wear out the system. Who wants to spend hours burning discs? It's a time saver so yes, a worthy investment for those who would rather not deal with all the frustration.
Great content!
I just ordered one and i have my analogue mega sg. God I'm so hyped.
