In Larry Jordan's tutorial on this technique, he states, "Skin is actually gray. (You, ah, know this by checking out your dead skin in the bathroom when no one is looking.) What gives skin its color is the red blood circulating underneath. Because all of us have the same color red blood, the skin tone line represents the color of red blood under skin."

@@JuiceBlack If you shoot a skin coloured plastic manikin (black or white), it will not show up on the skin tone line of a vectorscope. Sam is 100% correct. I've had issues with women wearing crazy amounts of concealer as they are still skin 'coloured' but the vectorscope can't see through the makeup!

    • @ziggggy53ify

@@donmcvey In that case, have them hold up their palm for at least one scene/image. Human palms are much more similar between people of different ethnicity.
If necessary, just use your own palm in the scene/image for each lighting scenario. Save the corrections and apply the same changes to all similarly lit captures.
The idea is just to make sure you have a reliable reference skin tone to compensate for lighting/capture differences.

In DaVinci resolve we have a better way. Using a selection of the skin that samples both luminance and hue to isolate the skin. Also for new resolve users here that don't know, the skin tone line is disabled by default on the vectorscope. Enable it by clicking on the settings icon above the scope and check skin tone line.
