I did 4 years of pottery in school and left it there. Now my daughter decided to do her sr project on the stress relieving aspects of pottery. I jumped on the wheel and turned a pot like it was just yesterday, after 35 years it seems i still got a nack for it and my kid is a natural. She turned a small bowl first try! Thanks for all your vids they are truly inspiring me to create. My new wheel is on the way and I spend my early mornings watching your magic. I can only hope to mimic your art. Thanks
Stumbled upon this looking at woodworking videos. Nice skills. Gives me an appreciation for pottery I never had. Im gonna look for some locals to buy from
watching you bring back some memories young man .little village in North Yorkshire called coxwold .they had kick-wheels back in the day .and they had big wood Kilns to fire the pottery .we went to the local wood yard for offcuts of wood to to fire the Kilns when i was Young Lad .happy days
Really appreciate the time and effort you share with us! I love watching and learning from you! I also like that you have "events" and you don't worry ..,. you take it as it comes! Thank you!
Thanks for the new clip. I'm probably not the only one who collects pieces from the potters who have been most helpful to me. Is there any way to purchase your work here in the US?
Hello, I love your videos. I'm trying to learn the turning of the potter's wheel. But it is not easy. The correct potter's wheel and find the right clay is difficult. And unfortunately, I'm left handed .. Greetings from Markkleeberg / Germany sends you Sylke
I've not really made any wide plates before but if it cracks while you throw it maybe the clay is a bit too dry, or if it cracks when it dries maybe it's drying out a bit to fast and you could cover with polythene to dry it out really slowly. Not sure, sorry, Dan
I laughed a bit to myself when you talked about the amount of time it takes to do a foot ring because it would take an eternity to make a bowl like that on a wood lathe compared to how fast you are. A question, probably stupid, but... can you re-use all the clay that ends up in the basin below the wheel?
As a Yorkshireman you should know I don't waste anything. All the waste clay goes back through the pugmill and is mixed with the bagged clay to make it softer if needed. All the sloppy stuff is collected to make the coloured slips. What do you do with your woodturnings ? Cheers, Dan.
youdanxxx I usually throw them in the fire cos they're crap! I've actually stopped turning and I've been using the lathe as a shelf for about 6 months but I'm going to get at it again soon. The problem with turning is that you fill the house with bowls and vases so I made a lot of pens in the last few months I was turning which are good fun and small. Circumstances here recently changed a lot of plans but I'll get back to turning soon. I'll be posting turning videos in the near-ish future because I'm being hounded by a couple of guys to do so. I wish I could reform wood shavings but, alas, it's not to be but I'm quite happy that you can reuse the clay because I don't like waste myself so I'll enjoy your videos even more now. Best Wishes, Brendan.
baconsoda I meant to say what do you do with your wood shavings not turnings.. I think you need to get a Wheel. Same principle as turning but you get your material in bags, damn site easier than seasoning wood.. Go on Bacon Potter !
youdanxxx LOL, shavings are dumped in the veg area to help raise the ground and make what I hope will be a pumpkin patch. I toyed with pressing shavings and paper pulp into briquettes but never really spent much time at it because the process was slow. If I went back to look at the press again I could probably make a better one using what I learned and other ideas on RUclips. I would be interested in pottery but I don't need another hobby right now because I have a couple of other projects in the pipeline but more of those later.
Would love to see a video or even a couple videos going over wheel types, bat vs non-bat, horse power, RPM, kick-wheel vs powered etc etc. There doesn't seem to be one out there.
To be honest I can't comment on that. I've used this ancient old wheel since I started 20+ years ago, and never used any other. I wouldn't go for a kick wheel, but I'd love to have a cone drive wheel that you can make go really slowly for bigger stuff. Cheers, Dan.
I think he said 5 - 6 pounds at the beginning? And I'm hoping I'm correct but it looks like a grey clay, the slip he uses is cobalt, he stated this in another video
Are you good a sculpting, or at least ok at it? You could sculpt an animal (lets say an owl) and put it into a closed sphere that you threw and cut designs, kind of like a double walled vase. Leave some (a bit) of clay at the top of the sphere thing to sculpt an owl face.
I've never tried my hand at pottery XD While I think it's amazing (you're also amazing and very talented!) I'm just far too clumsy. I just know I would ruin anything I tried to to make.

Do you have any tips or a video on cantering your clay? I see you were able to center it so fast! I’d appreciate it!
its so cool to see clay in action like on a wheel i mean
Why you didn’t show the dryness of the plate?
Thanks for the new clip. I'm probably not the only one who collects pieces from the potters who have been most helpful to me. Is there any way to purchase your work here in the US?
Muchas gracias me ayuda mucho, son excelentes tus videos.

Me too
how do you remove it from the bat? simple things but good info for the beginner
He uses a wire attached to what looks like 2 rings. They vary in sizes so that you can remove bigger pieces like this platter
It's incredible how much water you use. How does all the water effect your work?
I was wondering if you have any suggestions for getting rim cracks, I have been trying to make mine a bit wider with about 10 pounds of clay though.
I've not really made any wide plates before but if it cracks while you throw it maybe the clay is a bit too dry, or if it cracks when it dries maybe it's drying out a bit to fast and you could cover with polythene to dry it out really slowly.

compress the rim a ton! That should help.
Beatiful
Thank you for the video and for stating how much clay to use.
Very nice. :)
Veri good
what was the second trimming tool you used?
That actually looks like a nice pie pan for making apple pie. The bottom needs to be made more like a baking pan, though.

on the lathe it is nearly complete- once a bowl is made on the wheel it requires trimming, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing.
1st 👌👌😊

Hmm. Okay, thanks for considering it! (love your work and seriously appreciate your videos)
Where did you get your wheel? I'm looking in to start pottery and selling the outcome in my moms soap shop when I get good at it.
I love our Northern accent it's so iconic. Like if you're another proud English Northerner 💖
From where I get this wheel
youdanxxx How many pounds of clay did you use and what color?
I think he said 5 - 6 pounds at the beginning? And I'm hoping I'm correct but it looks like a grey clay, the slip he uses is cobalt, he stated this in another video
Why do you need water?
u 4 real ?
To keep the clay from cracking or drying out
Beautiful! Would be great for pasta or a pot roast with all the veggies. Loves it.

I like platters, me.

Cybele Sylens You don't know til you try! Why not give it a whirl, it's fun :-)
You're right. I'll have to try and see. I mean I can paint and draw so maybe I won't be THAT bad with pottery who knows lol.
Cybele Sylens There ya go!! You're already an artist and creative, so who knows what you'll create with clay... it's all about the adventure ;-)
Cybele Sylens don't be too discouraged, it's hard at first to learn how to make pottery on the wheel but if you work hard at it, it can be learned.
Am I the only one that finds this really attractive? lol
very nice ^^
can u also mention de no of pounds u use in ur video
Raining outside.
