Wonderful presentation! I am an active 78 year old and I have maintained and increased muscle mass. I'm always annoyed by those in the medical profession that say, muscle loss is inevitable and your just going to turn into a skeleton or a beach ball no matter what you do.
Holy crap, when I was in my 20s I could not gain muscle mass at all. All I did was lift weights. and lots of protein and calories. Now I'm 64. Sarcopenia for me. I will probably need a walker at 78.
Sarcopiña is not caused by aging. It’s caused by slowing down to a point where you do nothing and lose all your muscle. Which means you need to eat right and exercise continually your whole life. Diet is the most important thing, once you have that you have the energy, once you have the energy you can exercise, once you exercise you gain or keep the muscle you have. It’s as simple as that. Do that and you’ll be the healthiest looking corpse in the cemetery. Eventually.
I used to say the same thing, why don’t people keep exercising? What I’m struggling with is pain upon movement especially with resistance training with weights. It’s interesting that when you have pain in your hands, and weight bearing only makes it worse, it’s very difficult to do a lot. Pushups, pull ups, leg lunges, deep squats, and about all upper body workouts require use of hands and/or legs. Bad knee also restricts getting a good workout for legs.
I been doing strength training for 45 years. I'm 62, still doing cross training, kettlebell & dirtbike riding (great for agility & balance). For young people keep doing exercise you love (especially when your married & have children) . For older folks it never too late. For the I'll be fine😐😐😐Good luck👌
Yup, after my Heart event 4 years ago, I take 10,000 i/u of Vit D, 240 Mcg of K2, Co-enzyme co Q 10, Creatine 5 grams, all daily, and apple cider vinegar with lemon juice every day. I weight train and am active....my muscle mass AIN'T in decline...growth is amazing. I also quit sugar and 90% of my carbs and upped my protein intake.... This guy nailed it!!.
I love this guy! He Gave the Best explaination on this Subject. I am 85 yrs old and feel pretty Good BUT Now I am Noticing this condition. So I am Happy that Someone can explain How I can get started AMEN!
Hi! Start by changing your diet. Quit sugar and drop carbs by 90% Increase protein intake, and take 2 Tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar every day, in water of with lemon juice Your digestion needs a higher acid load. Start going for long walks and start some resistance training. Good luck!
Kia ora Joe. I'm beginning to practice Autophagia by periodic fasting to improve my immune system, and also keen to regain some of the muscle mass I was accustomed to as a younger man (
I'm hoping you are still around to answer a few questions. I am 62, walk 5 miles a day on a treadmill (5-6x a week), and strength train for about 45 minutes a day (again, 5-6 times a week). I put pencil to paper on this and found that I move (arms, legs, chest, back, etc.) 30,000 pounds for each of these workouts. I've been doing this (incrementally increasing my workout up to the above amounts) for 3 months. Your post caught my attention because I think we have some important similarities. My first question is how do you best use protein intake to maintain and build muscle? Do you take a protein supplement, do you eat protein before exercise, and/or do you eat protein after exercise? I'm overweight and balancing losing weight (preferably visceral fat) with maintaining/building muscle is a concern. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
@@brianwilliamschwartz7601 I would encourage you to keep doing research. Issues like the benefits of fasting, how is protein broken down and reformed into new tissue, what sort of recovery do you need (e.g., your forearms are different than your glutes or pecs), how your hormones change with age (free testosterone and SHBG). Keep up the good work
Interesting and useful. One point - I work out a lot, and used creatine for maybe 5 yrs in my late 40s/early 50s. It had a pronounced impact on my male pattern hair loss, which has reversed since I stopped using it.
Interesting about the creatine/hair loss association. More research needed "someone." I wonder if Creatine has an testosterone-promoting effect? I have heard that higher testosterone is associated with early MPB.
Protein that break down quickly (that you digest fast) is also a good option against sarcopenia, like whey protein, with a good diet and exercises of course.
I would add that you need to eat your protein in at least 30 g meals at a time. Snacking on sub 25g meals during the day will not boost your muscle growth so well.

Two questions. What about reduction in testosterone in men as they age, any correlation to sarcopenia? If you have issues with kidney function which generally also happens as you age, they don't clear creatine from your blood as well. In fact that is how kidney function is measured. So is creatine supplementation safe as you age and kidney function decreases?

I'm just about to turn 66 until a couple years ago I was very strong for any age. But recently I've been losing strength. I get very sore when I exercise. Instead of recovery and increasing strength as before. I lose strength with exercise. I try to stay active but I am finding everything much more difficult. I feel like I'm missing some key nutrient. I don't know what it is.
Hi can you help me out. I am losing muscle mass quite lot since last 10 days. Day by day I can see changes like gap in grips of hands. And same with the legs. My vitamin d was low at 15.34 but I took supplement of 60k for a week. Kindly help.🙏
I´ve been observing old fogeys for several years and can say that at about 75 the guys hit the wall and start going down the tubes no matter what they do.
You are correct, if you actually look at sports age group records, in some sports like powerlifting, the age group records are actually very stable until about 75, after which it enters a serious decline. There are some powerlifters in their 60's and early 70's who are still incredibly strong and can keep up with the young bucks. In some sports like 100m dash, declines do start long before 75, but the declines until 75 are quite gentle and minimal, but past that it shoots up like a rocket. And by the time said sprinter is 85 or 90 they are a complete shadow of their 74 year old self. So yes, if you study old guys in sports it's quite obvious that until about 75 exercise and lifting can compensate for the aging process very well, but past that age the aging process takes over no matter what. You could say that until about 75 age can indeed be "just a number" but past that it becomes a very obvious limitation. It's probably also no surprise that alzheimer's risk, rates of physical limitations and nursing home admissions also shoot up a lot after about that age. This makes me doubt that aging is just a linear progression, it probably speeds up a whole lot near the end of life. If taken well care of, there isn't much difference between a 65 year old and a 75 year old, but there is a world of difference between an 85 year old and a 75 year old. You can usually tell by just looking at them. But I still don't see this as a bad news, even if true, this means you have 75 years to be a force, and that's a long time. I see too many people thinking it's all downhill after 30 or 40 or 50, and I think that's just sad. I mean, perhaps it is if you are trying to get into the olympics for a youth dominated sport, but most of us aren't. So most of us should absolutely not look at middle age as a death sentence to being fit and strong. Old man speed may not be real, but old man strength is, at least until 75. Also a lot of people die before 75, many of us don't even have to worry about that period.
