The toughest part of networking is the transparency of it...when someone meets you with the end goal of aggressively talking business rather than building a relationship organically. The best types of networking is when its barely noticed as such.

What a breath of fresh air! You have no idea how long I was looking for a video that covers precisely this. Thank you for the insight into cold mailing and the approach you take to make a un-personal form of communication into one that makes sense. Sooo many people, incl myself, mail potential clients (that you just want to have a sit down and chat) sales pitches. Its so frustrating to sit there and type a email and know that you are forcing the sale. Thanks again for the insight.

I can attest that walking into small shops and finding some common ground, often leads to a discussion about project work. I even managed to score work in exchange for a lifetime supply of underwear/socks for myself/family from a local underwear outlet by using this approach. The only thing I'd like to say is that this approach isn't really 100% transparent. You ARE looking for a sale and most people know there is no such thing as a free lunch. I believe the key is that it's all about a human connection. Finding some common ground to discuss that isn't sales related gets your foot in the door. Small talk more often than not, leads to them asking you to pitch your work/skills.

Mariany I was just about to ask the same thing. I have tons of design studios in my area that are ”open to the public” and they encourage people (pretty sure they mean potential client's) to come in and say hi but how do I, someone who wants a jr design position, do that lol

Hey Ben, I followed exactly what you said on this video and cold emailed a bunch of agencies from Instagram and Dribbble about wanting to possibly collaborate with them :((( To be honest, I was getting a bit hyped up by the action I was taking but felt like I was too hard-sell. Fortunately, I DID get a response from one agency a country away, which led to a Skype call earlier! When I reached out to them, I realised that doing this expanded my network and if ever I needed their services from the projects I'm doing, I could just outsource it to them! I think I was very very lucky to have this encounter.
Now I'm going to reach out to 30 more people this week with the step by step process you showed in this video and I'm so excited! Thank you for helping us out

I gave myself a 30 day challenge - meet 30 people in small businesses in my neighborhood in 30 days. Some of the streets in my neighborhood have 30 small businesses just on one street. The First round of 10 people I approached was really positive. They all asked for my business card.

@@mrbenburns Yesterday, my business partner and I called the mayor and scheduled a breakfast with him using the communication tools you outlined. Super cool guy, and a real influencer in the area but I am not expecting anything, I honestly just want to meet him. Near the end of the conversation I said no business talk, sales pitches, etc. let's just get out and talk about our city, lives, get to know each other; He seemed to get excited and began telling me about how he loves to connect businesses together and how he has that opportunity all the time.
No fishing on my end, I guess he was just refreshed to have a conversation where someone isn't trying to get something out of him.

LinkedIn is a growing community with an increasing amount of people building their personal brands on that platform. I think the thing to look out for if reaching out on LinkedIn is, how active is the contact you're looking to get in touch with, how solid is your profile, and whether or not you're active on LinkedIn. I've personally been able to connect with a lot of new people, however, that was only because I was engaging with influencers. Would love your thoughts!

Instead of cold-emailing companies I chose to update the mobile version of my website, by creating a "customer feedback form" that I could link to clients and ask them to write a small review/opinion on the services that I provided for them.
This will suit as proof for newcomers that want to know who they're dealing with before they hire or connect with me through social media.
So right now i'm collecting reviews and post it online once I have enough of them.

What about how to act or what to do during the meeting? What types of topics should I discuss and how can I make the time worth for both parties?

Hey guys, can you activate the automatic closed captions please? Actually, I'd really appreciate it if you could change the standard settings so that they're always available. I'm hard of hearing and they help me a lot.
    Thanks, you guys rock!

People should read about introverts in the book Quiet, by Susan Cane. She talks about how introverts love talking about things we feel passionate about. We're not anti social, were selective about where we spend our extrovert energy. Cheers.

Amazing video. I’m curious to know, are you contacting individuals who (if all goes well) need your services or who are providing the same service as you and you’re simply networking? If the topic of conversation shifts to “ok what are we hear for?”, what is your response? At the very least we’ve made a friend, i just what to be prepared if the topic requires a little more structure.

Awesome video!! May I ask if there are any guidelines when you're talking shop?

I second this! As an introvert, I would love some advice/guidelines on talking shop.

Thanks for this. I'm late to the game and only saw these vids recently. I did the first 30 last week and completely bombed. I even got someone who responded back and totally railed into me for even contacting her. LOL. Lesson learned. I started again this week with a completely different approach (and through a different platform) and have received 3 positive responses out of 11. And, one of them has already suggested that I build out a website for them. Thanks again... and are there more of these vids that you'll be producing???

Still working on the challenge. Is it possible to give business cards to reinforce that? Or reassuring myself and my abilities. Or does it sounds too needy? Cause I am talking to people about my validity. And I have beforehand. People are been interested. But too nervous to give my contact information at times. One time someone ask for my assistance with an design on a project. And I hesitated. I rather share my email address than my phone number. So hope this advice helps. Cause needing it at this time.
