Watching this as I'm preparing for my run, when I saw the turtle I had I light bulb moment that most of the slowest animals in nature live long, which is a reminder for me that I don't have to go fast cause I'll be running for the rest of my life 😊keep things simple

I find running a bit like meditation when you get in the zone just relax and concentrate solely on breathing. Great video as usual Ben and Mary.

Noticing your body pleading for you to stop, and those pains Ben mentioned, then ignoring them, bringing your attention to the present moment, one step at a time staying present. ... its Meditation, and pushing your body to get those extra feel good hormones

I feel very very fortunate that I usually have at least one “ magical” run each week. Usually my long run. Those runs where you just feel amazing and all the world is a beautiful place. Those runs where several times throughout the run , you get lost in thoughts for 5-10 mins at a time and then when you come back to paying attention, you realize you were still running that whole time and didn’t even notice. Those are the best! My drug of choice. Well, that and coffee:p

This is all so very true. I'm 56, had 6 spine surgeries and currently dealing with a hip/achillies issue, which is frustrating. When you're good to go, you have to persuade yourself sometimes to get out but when you can't due to injury, all you want to do is get out the door!
I have a Tesco express about 300mtrs from my house and on really crappy weather days my mantra is 'just make it to Tesco' 😉

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to. Do you realize that this is the very path that goes through Mirkwood and that if you let it, it might take you to the Lonely Mountain or even further and to worse places?” - Bilbo Baggins

This is what I need it. I started running just 8 months ago. 240 pounds, 6 feet tall and every time I go out and push, I learn more and more about myself. My resting heart rate has decrease drastically, self stem has improved and how I face adversity is different now. All the good that running has brought to my life is something that I cannot put a price. I am a better father, husband, son, coworker and overall person because of running. It is that moment of solitude that allow you to fight the battles to come. Thank you for this video my friend and may you have a nice day. English is not my first language, I apologize for my grammar. Thank you.

I ran 10 miles this morning after an injury which kept me away from running for 3 weeks. After the first 3 miles I knew this would be a good one. So for the next 7 miles my legs did everything I asked them to. I passed other runners who no doubt felt exactly like me. I finished my run at a sprint and relished the sense of wellbeing which enveloped me. If anyone wants to better themselves then simply take up running and once you become as one with the pavement as the miles melt away....you will realize why. Yes Ben you are totally correct running never gets less uncomfortable but the benefits are truly huge. I have to say the Bangkok skyline is absolutely stunning. Superb video. Well done Ben and Mary.

The moment I got addicted to running was when I realised that most of your runs should be super easy. The joy of running easy, its life changing. Of course I love workouts, tempo runs, etc. But easy, zone 1-2 runs are just amazing. And those are the bread and butter of every runner

New subscriber ... have been watching your videos since early October.
Don't have much experience running. I've probably done about one year's worth of consistent running. Unfortunately that has been from a stint of 5 months running, combined with my current 7 months of running with about 10 years of nothing in-between. Im currently 45 years old, with a birthday in January 2022 coming soon. May of 2020, I was in the hospital for 12 days from typhus fever with pneumonia, 305 lbs, and was being told by doctors that serious kidney and liver problems were in my future if changes weren't made.
As of today, I'm 206.5 lbs, almost 100 lbs lost, ran a 5km race my gym sponsored in October with a PB of 27:31. Signed up to run a 10km race on January 8th 2022, with my eyes set on a potential half marathon on February 26th 2022 being sponsored by a local church in the town I live in (otherwise I wouldn't be considering it because I'm so green to running) I'm using the half marathon training grid your channel has created with some personal modifications of my own. Started the program a week after Thanksgiving in America, and the 10km race on January 8th fits great. I'm including in the training plan my weight lifting schedule (3 days a week, full body program - 2/11 exercise programs I alternate each week), treadmill walks (1 day a week, 45 to 60 minutes on HILL program, interval incline work, increasing speed a fraction every 7 minutes) and swimming (1 day, 50 laps, half regulation size pool). The one thing I've removed from your plan is the interval runs. I'm not in a position to say my aerobic base is good enough for the speed work. Right now I'm more concerned with form, strengthening my running muscles (namely glutes/hips to avoid IT Band problems on my left side and knee), and paying attention to my breathing.
Your down to earth advice and experience, and the adventures and races you and your wife have done are a truly wonderful inspiration and fundamental bedrock for the ups and downs in the reality of making running a lifestyle choice. I appreciate the candor and warmth of your channel! Looking forward to more Messy Happy to come, from both of us!

Love these videos. Someone once asked me why I chose running for exercise. At the time I said because it just feels correct. I still don't fully understand it, but it seems to me that running gets you in touch with your core primal self; your physical strengths and weaknesses, your character, and even your fears. Running makes you face all these things and deal with them. And if you persist, you can come out the other side transformed in a positive way.

  • @hughmoron3576

Appreciate the way you're putting the WHY into words. Personally, if I know a run is going to be shitty, I focus on the time I'll get home and feel amazing from having achieved something despite the hardship. That also helped for the last kilometres of my first half-marathon today, which I ran as a training long run in 2:20. Walking back to my car, bent, but not broken, I remembered where it started: your beginner 10k plan. Thanks to Mary and you for being the inspirations you are.
PS: I just saw your recent uploads to Strava. Can't wait for that video!!

Great video. I started to run 4 years ago when i turned 55 years old. I've been a keen cyclist for most of my adult life and never could get away with running and I still don't know why I took it up. However here I am, 4 years later addicted and finding running is taking over my cycling to some degree. Your video summed up my journey so far, and no doubt the journey ahead :-}. A question if I may. There are a vast amount of books on running claiming this and that, but which book would you give an older runner (now nearly 60) to read, which would it be?
