This is a song against all war. We do not give our children. If you want war, then go yourselves ! Love this Song
Well, if only it was so easy. What if they (whoever) come to you and bring war into your country?
@@endlessstudent3512 IT is a different time now, that is something we have to deal with. Putin changed the world, tragically. As a parent of two little boys it really scares me.
@@loupitalini-jv7ns y rly think the russians come and conquer europe, as allways hmm? Stupid lies.
I think it is also a Song about understandig people who flee from war to other countries.
When you here your Irakians should Go back to their Country and fight for it - Unterstand why the flee.
I totally agree. And if you hear Lucy screaming you know what it is all about a mothers fury...
This is not about WWII, no... it is about every single f*cking war. Let the warmongers aka politicians go to their wars and fight themselves.
When I listened to this song for the first time, I did not get goosebumps, no.. I got tears in my eyes (I am a native German speaker and have to say that the subs are sometimes not that powerful as the original lyrics are)
I have tears in my eyes.
This song should be sung in all languages of the world

Hello there. You are not old, you are beautiful. Greetings.
The song is over 30 years old but the message is timeless. I love it.
Da kommen mir echt die Tränen. Ich fühl auch so. Sie lernen nichts draus. Und wir bluten ein leben lang. Machts gut und alles liebe 💘.
The video was filmed in a forest south of Berlin, where Hitler's very last contingent fought in a murderous encirclement battle in the final weeks of the war
of the Red Army bled to death. The fighting did not end until May 1, 1945. Many soldiers, most of whom were not even 20 years old, and civilians came
for life. The Halbe forest cemetery now has 28,000 graves and every year there are several hundred dead who can still be found in the forests.
The trees all only grew after the war and you can still see tree-covered bomb craters, remains of shelters and trenches. It is
a very strong symbol to record this extremely emotional song at this point. We should always remember these horrors.
I love Reinhard Mey. This is the exact opposite of the American "Proud Military Family".
I'm so glad the world finally gets to know the beautiful songs of Reinhard Mey. The world really needs them.❤
Oh you have discovered Reinhard Mey 🙂 Germany‘s best poet of daily life. Love him ❤ His voice still gives me goosebumps
This song ist original from 1986 and it is from one of the greatest songwriters we have in germany. Tanks for your emphatic reaction.
So traurig.
Just for context: This video was a 2020 re-recording featuring some other German singers. Reinhard Mey only appears for the last verse. Originally the song was recorded by him in 1986 and it is indeed about war, or more precisely about conscientious objection against the draft into the conscript army, that the Bundeswehr (German military) was back then, and about fleeing from war, to save your family.
1.143 / 5.000
In 1986, it was about conscription, not war. And that, with all due respect, was completely beside the point.
However, it now fits an autocratic regime that is waging a cynical war of aggression! But then, the language being sung is not the right one, and there is no distinction between it and defense! It is a very left-wing and unrealistic viewpoint, which fits more in with one of the church's worldviews (the church is the one that has always adapted to the situation of the respective country and in this country has encouraged child abuse...)
To now create a context for wars that is not clearly identified is difficult to bear.
It was already presumptuous in 1986!
Even if it is difficult: at 18, you are an adult and can make your own decisions!
It would be a little less self-aggrandizing if the "sons" (who in my opinion are also completely out of date, what about the daughters?) were at least allowed to sing for themselves!
PS: The "authorities" didn't exist in 1986 any more than they do today! We are a democracy. A reference to Germany is therefore completely out of the question!
@@to.l.2469Well, luckily you are not at all "completely beside the point", "self-aggrandising" or "hard to bear". And if in 1986 you wanted to refuse service in the army, there was surely no "system" giving you a hard time, because "democracy".
Jeeeeez 🙄
@@j.m.w.5064 How about addressing my ARGUMENTS instead of getting upset about the content?
@@j.m.w.5064 I had already suspected that there would be no more comments from you.
PS: The song is definitely *not* about refusing military service or the difficulties involved! It is about parents implicitly assuming that their children would be "sacrificed" in a war (that isn't even happening)!
PS2: Democracy must be defended, with armed force if necessary! Anyone who is not prepared to do this ultimately doesn't care how they are governed, which inevitably leads to conformist conformism. Germany already had that in 1933-45!
@@to.l.2469Militarist bla bla. It’s people like you who are responsible for wars.
Every time i listen to this song i get tears in my eyes.
It is a very powerful song for peace. My son is 18, and he is amazing, and he is not made for anyone's war. I want him to live a long, good live
Yes, it's an anti-war song. He wrote the pacifist song in the 80s and reinterpreted it with friends in 2020.
The message: "Imagine there is war and no one is going"
It's relieving and encouraging there are still people with this mindset. My thoughts on this were largely rejected, which is ok. I don't think I have the final answer. But to this day I cannot understand why all those who clearly support war - regardless of the reason - do not view it with the same skepticism. The reasons that have always been given are nothing more than hopes about how a conflict will end. And so far, time has not proven them right. I fear that in the end they will turn away and simply ignore everything that happened at the end and what (did not) remain.
Unfortunately, your quote is an excerpt. The full quote is: "Imagine there is a war and nobody goes. Then the war comes to you." --- Another saying on the subject is: "If you want peace, prepare for war."
@@DieAuswandererDoku You found the wrong quote. Search for "Suppose They Gave a War and No One Came". And your other saying does not relate to that, but is used from those without critical thinking to support war efforts.
I listened to this Song only once before and again immediatly tears started to fall. What times do we live in. As a German: I grew up with children's songs about how we are all little Europeans who walk towards each other and now half of my friends and collegues have a plan where to escape to just in case.
My elders still talk about the familiy members who died in WW2, the trauma and guilt is still so alive. And they talk about war so easily again when my sweet 89 y.o. grandpa still cries over his older brother they sent to the front lines during the last days of war when he was only 17 and scared and already 1.88 tall.
"Of course they sent him all to the front girl, there were only boys and old men left. He was so kind to me, girl, and I still remember his smile and how he was always so hungry and still he gave me the bigger portion each time."
I would do anything to protect my boys from experiencing war.
❤
Thank you for accepting my proposal.
Reinhard Mey is a bard who has written and sung witty lyrics, but also socially critical songs.
This song was written in the time when there was still compulsory military service in Germany, but in my eyes it is timeless.
The song is timeless, since at the moment there are plans to reinstall compulsory military service in Germany.
@@Jutta-fp4fn The American military never left Germany. Still about 32.000 Americans are stationed in this country.
@@hennyreese1546 I do not write about american soldiers, but about german conscription. This song has nothing to do with american soldiers, at least not in relation to Reinhard Mey's sons.
I love this song and deeply respect its beautiful lyrics and the moral behind them. If this song were respected and sung in all countries around the world, we would finally achieve true and lasting peace. Unfortunately, peace cannot be one-sided.
I live in Switzerland and have no children. Even now at 54 years old and everyone is talking about war. Some countries are currently arming themselves. This song always makes me cry and hope the war that everyone is talking about doesn't come.
Wir sollten was dagegen tun.
There are times the German language is poetic to my English ears, beautiful song.

Reinhard Mey, Hannes Wader, Konstantin Wecker - Est ist an der Zeit (English subtitle).....check this one out too, same topic, different song, even deeper !!
Also "Reinhard Mey - Das Narrenschiff" and "Reinhard Mey - Sei Wachsam" are also great.
Thumbs up for "Es ist an der Zeit"!
The english version is Eric Bogle - No man's land (green fields of france) but I find the german lyrics are painting more powerful (and also cruel) pictures of war in your head...
Eins meiner Lieblings Lieder!

This is the newly recorded version; now done as an eclectic rock ballad, performed by various German artists, including the original songwriter Reinhard Mey. It is a very powerful anti-war, anti-military, anti-weaponry song, so beautifully done; I would think it one of the best protest songs ever made. Moves me to tears every time I hear it.
Since i became a father of a son two years ago, this song get's me every single time im listening to it.
It is great how much feeling (anger) the singers are able to get in their vocals.
By the way: The video was made at a place where nearly 100000 soldiers died in one single battle in the war.
I'm one who suggested this song. As I said when I did that: This is about "national service" something that seems to have been a topic in Britain's election campaign recently ...
Reinhard Mey is the one who sings the last verse. He's the grandmaster of 60s to 90s singer songwriters in Germany. Well, one of a group of three. They even had a gig together as older men: Reinhard Mey, Hannes Wader and Constantin Wecker. There's a good YT Video of those three together.
this is one of the best songs ive ever heard. there are so many german artists singing this song. reinhard mey normally sings it alone (and without the rock part) and it always gives me goosebombs. he sings for our children and as a german i only can agree that no one of us want to give their children to war.
My Friend, I first heard Reinhards Songs in the early 80s, when I was a child. Since then, he always had a piece in my heart. He is the good soul of Germany. Born in the Firestorms of Berlin in 1942, he is unique in a French-German Friendship since the 60s!
Mey has been a singer/songwriter known as a pacifist for decades. This song here is ignored by the public media and I'm glad, thanks to a hint from a friend, I found it on and downloaded it from RUclips. Hopefully your reaction will help spread it, and I'm looking forward to your future reactions to German songs. I take your announcement as a promise and wonder what surprises you have in store.
The forest they stand in is a forest where 100.000 soldiers in WWII died and thousands are still missing...
Reinhard Mey is just one of our best poets. Every song he ever wrote is a manifest to peace!
I have heard the song countless times or played it myself and I still cry every time. Reinhard Mey is the greatest of the German songs artists. I have experienced how this man only enchanted a huge concert hall with a guitar. His songs are very autobiographical and at the same time as when he wrote them while sitting at my table (For example Alle guten Dinge sind Drei). He is best known for "Über den Wolken (Above the Clouds"" This is only one of his works. And by far not the best.
I was at a protest about the war in Ukraine and there was a German-Ukrainian woman who had fled Kiev with her two children and sang passages from the song on stage and I swear all the participants were bawling.
Best song ever. The old version of Reinhard Mey and the new version which has a lot ovf artists I replay like in my growing up years. I'm 40 years old now and I know this song as long as I can remember. Lovely your reacting to it!
The song is against the war, not against a war.
Another German singer-songwriter (Hand Söllner) once said "If all fathers loved their children, there would be no wars, because my father can tell me that he likes his child when he shoots another father...."
For your interest, thats the Forrests around Berlin, where hundred and hundred of thousand Sons died....
This is timeless and especially a strong statement these days where politicians and media talk about being ready for war.
That is what my parents - born in 1925 and 1930 - said and did, supporting my bother and me refusing conscription!
In the current context of the Ukraine war, where the NATO wants to send troops sooner or later and discussions in Germany going on about the possible return of compulsory military service for both men and women, this song is more contemporary than ever...
As a mom to a year-old daughter, I just hope and wish of a peaceful world for her and pray that she'll never have to experience or even fight in a war.
Reinhard Mey is not only a singer/songwriter, he is also a poet, observer, pacifist, feminist, activist. What makes him a great artist is, that he CARES about what is going on in this world today and back then.
I like how everyone making a reaction vid to this song goes completely wide-eyed at that point where the song cranks up to 15/10. I love this song, both versions, this and the original, have me in tears every fricking time.
Luci van Org nailed her part. So powerful.
I really love gute nacht Freunde from reinhard may, I think it's one of his best songs
By far the sweetest reaction I've ever seen! Love and greetings from Germany - Gerd.
Hello, I am from German. This song is against war. Because over the hall world is war and say don‘t want to give their son’s for war
As a German I never heard this.😮 Reinhardt Mey is "Über den Wolken " for me. This one made me cry though!
And a little cringe, too.😂
reinhardt mey made many political and otherwhise controversial songs, look up "der kleine wiesel" or "Sei Wachsam" for example
In light of the senseless wars in Ukraine and Israel, this made me cry today. The relevance after so many years is crippling!
And you have never heard "Narrenschiff", "Männer im Baumarkt" or "Gute Nacht Freunde"?
Reinhard May is the German songwriter of the German language. A poet and chanson singer who is also known in France.
Thank you for reporting on this, we don't want any more wars. Certainly not against Russia either, it's time for peace.
My song since my oldest son was that age... luckily my second son is not in the question for the army! And even more so since Germany is messing around with military service again!
This calm old man with his round glasses in the end of the song (after the screaming woman) is Reinhard Mey himself. (7:10)
He usually is allone with a guitarr and sings wonderfully, no, he tells storys and tales!
The song means on one hand "I won't give my sons (children) to war" but also "I won't give my sons (children) to the army" (written in a time where militairy duty has been mandatory for young males in Germany)
And he tells "children" since aditionally to his two sons he has a daughter (mentioned several times in his songs)
Just seen the "and friends"-Version doesn't end with "no, I don't give my children)
Wonderfull song!
This is the german view of war. I never can understand how anybody can be proud to be a soldier or parents who want their sons to go to the army. And when their son dies, they tell them he was a hero to make the pain less.
It's about protecting the people, not about invading other countries and killing people. Are both the same sometimes? Indeed.
@@echtvergoldetyou here yourself talking? Tell me any war the Americans fought to protect their country and not for economical reasons 😂😂😂😂😂😂
When I was a child I heard so much Reinhard Mey songs. This was one of these I loved the most. This new version hits me right in the heart and throw me back in this time. It made me sad because of the message (I like that you realized it right at the begining) and it also make me happy because it made me go back in time back to my happy childhood days
why you have a whole list of artists is explained pretty easy. Germany hast the 3rd biggest music market in the world after the USA and Japan. Some are performing in german some in english. check them out, I'm sure you gonna love a lot of them!
The forest in the video was the scene of the "Battle of Halbe" between Germany and the USSR shortly before the end of the Second World War. Many of the fallen soldiers are still lying there. The losses amount to around 10,000 civilians and 50,000 soldiers on both sides. Remains of the deceased are still found and buried there today.
The older gentleman at the end of the song is Reinhard Mey himself, he wrote the song in the mid-80s when the Cold War threatened to get really hot again.
Großartiges Lied, passt in die heutige Zeit ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The last one is the Songwriter.. Reinhard Mey.. ❤
What a song, what a message, puuuuh
It's an anti war song. It's not about the past it's about now. And I am all here for it.
This is a Song about war in general. As we Germans have our experience with war and the consequences, a lot of us are saying "you want get our sons". They will not get my children either.
good choice of music. Reinhard Mey has some good songs, always profound. sometimes he also tells little stories with his songs. thank you very much for this video with reinhard mey and his friends. t was great 🙂 best wishes and have a good time 🙂 Flora
We need this song translated and distributed all over the world, then it would help to stop the new age of insanity...
Thank you for this emotional reaction ❤ Roger Cicero with „In diesem Moment“ is also very beautiful
Totally love this song and I fully agree with all the lyrics, statements, context, background - everything - if someone is in the shoe of being forced to support an AGGRESSOR.
However, what does a nation/people/country do if it gets militarily attacked and needs to be defended? What are the real options in such a situation? 😒
I love this amazing, powerful song and I've cried every single time I heard it. I feel empowered by it too - when we raise our children (and I don't just mean a biological family but also neighbors, students etc.) as critical thinkers and embassadors of peace, when we teach them compassion, respect and love... we actively change the whole world.
Yes, you are right, this is a very very very powerful rendition of the Reinhard Mey's original song from 1986. Indeed it is an anti war song, but also protesting against the forced military duty. His sons have been 10 and 4 years old when he wrote that song, so he was experiencing all these things he sang about first hand.
Reinhard Mey is one of the most well known German singer-songwriters with songs covering all types of topics, not only politics, but also bureaucracy, doctors weird attics, journalists, rich people, environment, neighbours drilling holes in the walls in the very worst moments... every day stuff. ^^
This is one of my favourites from him, it's about the pioneer of aviation, Otto Lilienthal: ruclips.net/video/A9dMjg6jz2I/видео.html
Feel the anger! It might need take Metal Music to wake people up. Mey is one of the greatest German songwriters and lyricists, He can rock a stadium with just his voice and his guitar. This song goes down to the core. We don't need hate, we don't need wars. Why can't we become wise? I think that this song should be a warning, too. Be careful who you vote to. Don't let those Haters and Nazis seperate our community.
This is a recording of a classic by Reinhard Mey. It always came to the surface whenever war in any form became an issue in current politics. Recently it has been played more and more because the reintroduction of compulsory military service is being discussed in Germany.
Another very good reaction, I love this song aswell
I only knew the original verson ...til now. Thanks!
Reinhard Mey is a great storyteller sometimes with humor sometimes with deep meanings. Love his song about Kaspar Hauser, a historical "cold case"
Nein, meine Kinder gebe ich nicht! - No, I won't give my children away! - Non, je ne donnerai pas mes enfants !
The song was written in the 80s. During cold war. In Germany, there was a peace movement. "Frieden schaffen ohne Waffen." It was against Atomic Bombs, again war. It is a Anti-War-Song from the 80s.
In my opinion, the original is much better.
I went to school with one of his sons. Sadly he passed away from pneumonia a while ago as a young man but Reinhard Mey has song written this song from the standpoint of a pacifist born into the war (1942) and raised in post war Germany that now has children of his own and wants to protect them from the atrocities his generation had to face. His beliefs have carved him into the song writer he was and still is. I admire his music and talent and not just because I lived next door to him for a while.
this is a song against war. Not a specific war, it's against all wars in the world. He has two sons and he don't want to give them to that people, who want war. He is a true pacifist, idealistic and I really like this musician.
Gonna be honest here - the moment this song doesn't make me cry anymore you better burry me cos that'll mean I'm dead.
I don’t even think this song is musically catchy or even super good but for some reason it still makes me cry
It doesn’t need historical contest. There is a war going on in the Ukraine right now. With a border to Poland. Which has a border to Germany. So, it’s a remake of a song he made during the Cold War in the 1980. Since war unfortunately never goes out of style it seems it’s always up to date. Unfortunately
When there was still compulsory military service in Germany, a friend of mine wrote his refusal inspired by the song lyrics. This friend is now a great photographer in Hamburg and had the idea of re-recording the song. This video is the result. You can see him very briefly at the end of the video when you pressed pause.
As a german sometimes I feel lonely being against armament but then I realise that we are many who don’t support the decisions of our government. Stay strong 🕊️❤
Es ist an der Zeit - Hans Wader, Konstantin Wecker und Reinhard Mey.
Thats some straight to your face brutal war song
At min 7.08 : that man is Reinhard Mey
Thank you for this. I want to tell the world about the meaning of (i hope) most of the german people.
iirc Germany is like the second biggest music market in the world (after the US), so yeah, we do have a LOT of musicians/artists.
You didn't expect something like this? Never underestimate a loving mother. The last singer wearing a leather jacket and round glasses is Reinhard Mey, who released this song in the 80s. Back then, he didn't have any friends with him. But this version is much more intense. The song is aimed at those in power with the message that he won't make his sons available for possible wars. Although the song is so old, it is more relevant than ever.
Try "Weiße Fahnen" (white flags) from Silbermond. It's also about war and the time when a small boy is dreaming while sleeping where he can escape to piece
The song, "No, I won't give up my sons!" has its origins in the guitar solo with Reinhard Mey.
I already knew this. It features Eric Fish, singer or Subway to Sally (and his beautiful solo project aswell).
Maybe check them out as well.
The artist at minute 7:03 is Reinhard Mey.
He originally wrote this song. This video is based on his ballad.
He was alongside to nena and hannes wader one of the last true musicians from germany...
He especially used music to express his life, experience, opinion and most of all his warnings .. he is a true poet and artist... Last of his kind... The rest here in germany .. nothing but small spineless critters. Not many know him so yea... Btw he was one of few artist who was able to play a guitar with 12 strings instead of six. Together with hannes warder... True legends ..
I tell u the last old guy with glasses is him. The one who sings about leaving the country living as thieves and the last to say "ich gebe meine Söhne nicht"... This is him. And this song is a remake of an old hit he made with his friends. He made it to warn us Germans of the current politics the so called "ampel" which is pushing for war. They caused ukraine situation to become much worse since the start.
Please do me only ONE favor: Never again compare Reinhard Mey with such a lousy commercial singer like Gabriele Susanne Kerner. I am a soundengineer and know both personally and believe me there is an marvelous difference.

In the 80s we had the threaten of the 'cold war' with soviet Union and Germany still was divided. This for the historical context. I grew up in this time and remember the growth of weapons on both sides. There has been a constant threat.

That wonderful female singer, who's screaming in the middle part of the song, was quite famous for another song in the 90's: Just search for Lucilectric - Weil ich ein Mädchen bin ;)
Of course every line in this song is true. But over the last two years, I've thought about it again and again. The song was written decades ago, when nobody could see the current situation coming. But so many people have died in the last centuries for the fact that we are allowed to live in a democracy today. Nobody should be forced to defend a country. Nevertheless, I hope that I would do my part should it be necessary to protect this democracy.
