Sticks behind the batter are called wickets the guy with the gloves is the wicket-keeper. The idea is for the bowler is to hit the wickets to get the batter out. The guy with the hat is the umpires & there are 2 umpires on the field, they are the one who decides if the batter is out or not. There is a cricket tutorial on the net somewhere it explains most the rules of cricket try find it & check it out.

To get an idea how fast these guys are, the average club bowler bowls at 70-80 mph. Facing anything faster, mostly at the professional level, and your reaction time is a few tenths of a second. Once you get over 90mph, even seasoned pros struggle. At 100mph like this, it's just instincts. I wouldn't even see the balls these guys were bowling. Sadly, the physical demands of bowling this pace are severe. Bond and Tait in particular had injury-plagued, short careers.
Other hostile quicks of note were Waqar Younis (quite a sight in combination with Wasim Akram, a deadly duo who actually disliked each other), Allan Donald, Michael Holding (one of a queue of fast bowlers from the West Indies in the 70s and 80s) and Jeff Thompson's partner, Dennis Lillee. While not of the same class, Devon Malcolm took 9 of a possible ten wickets against South Africa, and concussed one of their players, in his greatest ever bowling performance. He was unplayable that day.
As for getting to grips with cricket, watch a full game. Clips don't tell you the full story - how dominant the bowlers or batsmen are, the fields being set, the state of the game and reactions to playing conditions.
I learned watching Test matches - I've watched sides on the verge of humiliation come back to win matches from nowhere, individuals turning a game on their head with moments of luck, brilliance or stupidity, gritty batting partnerships, fast bowlers fighting through the pain or illness, wily spin bowlers (Shane Warne the best of them at this) turning set batsmen into basket cases. You may not have the time, but 50 over or T20 also offer these moments too.

I was a half-decent club cricketer. Down in Cornwall we were drawn against a senior league side (we were div 4 at the time). They had a pro from the West Indies. His first ball to me I just didn't see, luckily it was just outside off. Second ball top edged for 6 over the slips. My first thought was 'you stupid dick, why didn't you miss it?' Didn't see the third ball either. I guess the guy was bowling about 85 moph.
Second story. I used to watch Worcestershire a lot, and saw Leicester play us at home. Vanburn Holder was bowling at David Gower, and myself and my mates distictly heard Gower say 'good ball' as he was playing the forward defensive shot he had tht much time. Gower got 60-something and got out. I think he got bored.
In IPL(franchise cricket in India, like MLS in USA), an average cricketer makes $450,000 for 2 months where he would play 0 to 16 games. The top players make around $2M for the same 2 mnths but they usually play 10-16 matches.

No they don't my guy, if a player is valued at about 2 million USD he only takes home somewhere between 700,000 to 800,000 USD because he gets paid on average per game, agents fees is a HUGE chunk, and there are various other payments that get cut from that fee.

And what you're saying might be true, however, if you put 3rd parties in consideration, cricket is never the primary source of income for these players. IPL is watched by almost a billion people, so as soon as you become a part of such a league, you become a brand- you become brand ambassadors, you start getting ads, millions of followers on instagram, etc. For eg. Virat Kohli (arguably the best currently) makes 5cr INR, which is 6-700,000 USD for every post and he posts atleast once every two days, throughout the year.. then there's ms dhoni, who has a strawberry farm and is the largest producer and exporter of that fruit in his native state.
Anyways, it's all huge amount of money, and I've not mixed inr and usd like the other guy thought.
@@kevindemel5580 if you don't know how ipl works player are put through auction if a players is sold at 17 crore rupees which is slightly more than 2 million dollar and he is charges 10 % tax that means he get around $1.8 million of which 20% is paid in first week % 60% is paid in between the tournament and last 20% is paid at the end ,and the tournament only goes for about 2 months ,and yes the average salary of ipl player is around $450,000

About the clothes they all wear - this is International Test Cricket with a history of over 100 years. It's known as the "Gentlemans Game" born in a England and still carries the strict traditions that go with that.
Note in those older clips, the batters were wearing either just a cloth cap, or a helmet without a front grill.
There was some resistance to wearing helmets back in the day, before finally becoming mandatory.

Padded gloves to protect the hands were first used in 1850. A hard "box" to protect the groin area came in 1874. The first helmet was used in 1974 causing great derision. It took another 40 years to make a helmet mandatory in the game. Just shows priorities 😂

I think it's a bit tragic that we never really knew how fast Jeff Thompson truly bowled, as by the time we had the chance to measure his actual bowling speed, it was very late in his career and he was getting a bit older. In his favour though was the fact that it was specifically tested how fast he bowled in a more informal setting, not in a match, so he could likely go all out without worrying as much about actually bowling well, but I'd still imagine that over a full career he likely would have had a few km/h more to give.
Exactly, and don't forget that collision he had with Alan Turner that dislocated his shoulder, he was never the same after that.
Rod Marsh once said that he had kept wickets for a few bowlers who could hit 100 mph on occasion... But according to Rod, Jeff Thompson blew them all away by regularly being able to bowl closer to 110 mph when at the peak of his fitness and career.
What a pity he was underrated but much admired in West Indies

Guys who were there tell the story of one getting away from Jeff Thompson, it flew past the keeper and hit the sight screen on the full. I don't think you could do it no matter how hard you tried.
Obviously people occasionally die being hit, but it's pretty rare with modern safety equipment.
Saw Mike Procter do that once at Canterbury for Gloucestershire in the 70s and the ball slipped out of his hand just as he was about to release it. Six wides.
I was at a game at the old Gabba (i.e. before its redevelopment) in Brisbane in the late 70s and Thommo bowled a bouncer which flew at least 3 metres over the 'keepers head (Ray Phillips, I think) and landed on the dogtrack which ran around the perimeter of the ground past the boundary.
Bowling is much harder than pitching. I mean bending ur arm and chucking is much easier to generate pace😂then bowling with a certain action without bending ur arm to generate pace

The cricketers wear white clothes and sweaters as its a tradition made by brits. It's usually cold in England so they used to wear sweaters and tradition continued. Though cricket has different formats so they only wear white in test format. Rest formats they wear different colour jerseys.

So 100mph is 160kph, 60mph is around 100kph, easiest way to remember if you aren't into making calculations.
It takes about 0.4 seconds for a 90 mph ball to leave a bowlers hand , travel the pitch length , and arrive at you. In that time you have to spot the ball, determine its trajecory, length, try to see if it is an inswinger, outswinger, or some sort of slower ball. Decide what shot to play. Get into position to play that shot. Finish your backlift and actually play the shot.
That is 90 mph. Shoab Akhtar was timed at 100 mph, and he still didn't look as quick as Jeff Thomson.

It`s all about the movement of the ball through the air and off the pitch. The winners are the ones who score the most runsby hitting the ball past the fielders. If you hit the boundary rope you get 4 if over the boundary 6 There are 10 ways to get a player out - Bowler hits the stumps with the ball, ot batter stop that by getting legs in the way, (Leg Before wicket - umpire`s decision, playing the ball in the air to a fielder who catches it, failing to get your bat down behing the line as you run to the other end but a player hits the stumpos with a direct throw. . Very complicated & lots of mind-games! Best to watch one-day matches to get the idea . Like the appreciation!
No way any of those bowlers are quicker then Thommo. I have seen all these players bowl in my lifetime and Thommo was 10k quicker then any of them before he injured his shoulder playing against Pakistan. When Clive loyd, Barry Richards snd Viv Richards say her was terrifyingly quick that speaks volumes
Thommo ended the careers of quite a few players. It takes a lot of courage and great reflexes to face someone bowling 150+ kph. Thommo was clocked at 160 a few times but anyone who faced him or stood in the cordon when he bowled knows that 170 wasn't unusual.
I saw Brett Lee bowl for NSW before he had surgery prior to his international debut. He too was significantly quicker before the surgery
@@Art-fl8jn I used to live at Mosnan in Sydney and one of my friends played with him and and brother Shane at the local club (where Shoaib came out for part of a season too) and I got to know them both. After Brettt's injury(s) he worked with coaches who modified his action to put less less strain on his body and when Australia toured New Zealand in 2000 I rate him as being at his quickest then - plus he could maintain his pace for quite long spells

In terms of numbers, West Indies produced the most genuinely quick bowlers, but most of them were 30-40 years ago. In more recent times, Australia and Pakistan indeed have the most success in that area.

@@HaroonKhan-pd1pz I believe Ian Bishop, before his injury, was the equal of them in pace. Holding was pretty terrifying too. Malcolm Marshall, though a hair slower, was the most skillful of them all, a true master of the art along with Lillee. It's sad he died so young. Curtly Ambrose wasn't as quick but was perhaps the best of them all due to his height and accuracy.
Note, there were few speed guns around in their day. Thompson was only ever measured in the nets. Brett Lee was quick but he was never a top class Test performer. He was better with the white ball. Shoaib could have been so much better if he'd looked after his fitness. He ate poorly (he enjoyed his takeaway chips as a club pro in Northern Ireland) and smoked! "Toecrusher" Waqar and Wasim were the best Pakistan produced, with Thompson and Lillee, Australia's best quicks. McGrath stands out as their best seamer but was much slower for much of his career.

You are not allowed to block the “sticks” with your leg pads. Basically, If it hits your leg pads (without touching your bat) and the ball was heading for the wicket (sticks) you are out.

Did you notice that in the older videos the batters weren't wearing helmets, just a cloth cap! Having a 5.5oz missile legitimately thrown at your head at 100 mph - they definitely didn't get paid enough back then!

In the 1977 Ashes Centenary Test Australian batsman Rick McCosker had his jaw broken by a bouncer in the first innings yet still came out to bat - still without a helmet - in the second innings with his jaw wired shut and held together with bandages; the first ball he faced from England's captain Tony Greig was another bouncer.
There is a line on the ground that the bowlers' heel must not go over, the umpire (guy with the hat) is looking that first his foot does not go over that line, he then looks at the line (angle) of the ball to ensure that it is a legal ball - too far to the left or right is a no ball (bowl it again), too short and high is a no ball also bowl it again. The umpire also adjudicates if the batsman is out if the ball hits the batsman's pads in the right position.
Cricket ball weights over 5 ounces , it comes at you at about 90 miles / hour while swinging both ways , there's no way of saying what direction that ball might take after pitching & then there are these freakish bowlers who bowl at you over 100 miles / hour ... Cricket is one of the most dangerous games out there especially when you are batting in Australia, South Africa, NewZealand & England due to the combination of wind, heat, hard pitch & deteriorating pitches during test matches.. That's why you see batsmen heavily padded from top to bottom

Simply. You can bowl a bean ball (Full Toss) or Bouncer ( Ball bounces Off the Pitch), both where a bowler can aim for their body, or head.... At these speeds, between swing and the when bouncing , Using the balls "seem"..
Theres no Virtual box to aim if for, You can aim for whatever you want... Pads, Wicket, Body, or seduce them into a bad stoke, and caught behind.... Theres not just a catcher,. Theres multiples, Not wearing gloves, called "Slips"

Dennis Lillie of Australia 🇭🇲 was the fastest and scariest bowler all Batmen hate to face him and I don't blame them. He was so quick, you couldn't see the ball what so ever.
Thompson was always acknowledged to be the faster of the two, but Lillee had more control and skill. Together, they were a handful.

I was very lucky to watch Test cricket in the 90s as there were so many excellent pairs of quicks - Ambrose and Walsh, Donald and Pollock (he was terrifying in his early years - look up when he took four in four balls in the English county championship), Waqar and Wasim.
@@colinmorrison5119 I can remember as akid watching some of the windies bowlers Marshall, ambrose, garner, holding etc. Akram was brilliant because of pace and being able to swing the ball so much. Kapil dev was similar to Lillie after he came back from his back injury. Even though he wasn't express pace Kapil would outthink batsmen.

I have seen Shoab Aktar, Lee, Sean Tait and Johnson in recent years; but the two fastest were definitely Jeff Thompson(70's) and Frank Tyson(way back, the 50's)

I saw all those except Tyson (only in newsreels) plus Dennis Lillee, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Imran Khan, Richard Hadlee, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Alan Donald ("White Lightning " is too often overlooked when the fastest bowlers are mentioned) etc, and Thommo was quicker than them all - you could barely see some of the balls he bowled.
Although he's on that list at #5 Jeff Thomson is considered the fastest bowler of all time. He was bowling at just under 100mph in that video but that was late in his career; early in his career he collided with another player while fielding and broke his shoulder and was out of the game for over a year and when he came back was at least 10mph slower. He was truly frightening at his peak; legendary wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, who despite being perhaps the greatest 'keeper to pace bowling openly admitted he had trouble with Thommo's speed and claimed he bowled at at least 175km/h (110mph).
Plus they didn't really start timing the speed of balls during the games until the 1990s, In Thommo's era i.e. the 1970s they had a World's Fastest Bowler competition which was one of the first times they used radar to accurately messure the speed. The competition included Andy Roberts, Dennis Lillee and Michael Holding, who were considered some of the fastest of their day. Because of a contractual issue Thommo wasn't playing that season and didn't think he was included in the contest, and only turned up to watch and hadn't played in over six months. However, the cricket authorities told him he was participating, and he had to quickly borrow another player's clothes and equipment and had reportedly consumed a couple of beers for lunch beforehand. Yet despite all these handicaps Thommo still won the contest and was noticeably faster than rhe next quickest, Michael Holding considered one of the fastest of all time.
Also, you need to consider how they measure the speed of the ball. These days it is measured directly out of the bowler's hand aprpox three metres in front of the bowler before it lands on the pitch, while in those days and for the contest it was measured when it passed the stumps and after bouncing, which it is estimated reduced the speed by 15%. So if Thommo was clocked at bowling at around 160 km/h at that time it would mean that by today's standards he would have been over 180km/h.

He was measured but not often and not by the same standards as today - but never at his peak when he was truly frightening.
