“I have so much anxiety that I can hardly stand to play an online game with other players” - a RUclipsr who publishes content for the entire world to see
Okay, saying "it gets good at Heavensward/Shadowbrigners" does the game a disservice because ARR is very important setup for those later parts. ARR is badly paced because its chekov-ing all those guns. and in itself, ARR isnt *bad* but you will only know how good it was when you get all the payoff in later expansions. People do tend to look back fondly on the early experiences, but it is very hard to explain WHY ARR is so important, so most people just say "it gets good later"
also, in regards to "silly side stuff"... have you heard of a certain "Inspector Hildibrand"? if not, ask your friends about it, you will not regret it
"if the story isn't doing enough to keep me engaged" i've heard this sentiment a few times and i'd just like to give my two cents on it. If you picked up a book and didn't read the words inside, there's nothing the book can do to keep you engaged. it must be read to be enjoyed. If someone decides to skim over or skip the text, even in early ARR, where the plot (the things happening) is slow moving or opaque, it would be impossible for the story to keep you 'engaged' because you aren't actually reading the story. A criticism i would levy at the game would be in the fact that it doesn't teach you how to best enjoy the story that it presents (which at many points has no gameplay). at present you can speed through the story quests, ignoring all the fun gameplay and newly unlocked systems which the game dolls out to you in the onboarding process. ARR is a game about it's world, the worldbuilding and the growth of your character's skills. It's difficult to enjoy this leisurely introduction to this beautiful land when you're mainlining an msq which is best enjoyed alongside optional quests, crafting, optional dungeons, levelling a couple of alt jobs if you want, hunting logs, gold saucer, levelling your grand company, and chatting with friends, making friends and joining a free company. ARR's story is meant to compliment these things. compared to the expansions which place a greater focus on their story. But the truth is, ARR is great, you don't have to wait for it to 'get good' later, it starts good and goes absolutely bonkers later although that's almost all at the conceptual and plot level. the writing was always just as detailed and charming as it remains today, the voice acting is regrettably lacking in performance, and quantity, but besides that, the written dialogue is great and is worth reading. (yes i'm talking about every line, even on 'boring fetch quests') A Realm Reborn does not deserve to be rushed.
I love this thought. Its just a shame that it's so hard to get friends to play because the modern playscape of gaming is just dopamine rush after dopamine rush.
@@alstermaniac it’s not for everyone, that’s for sure, you could watch all of one piece in the time it takes to read ffxiv’s story lol. It’s a game you really have to want to play and finding something else who wants that specific thing just the same way you do is rare! Though it does mean you always have something in common with the average player you see around the game so making friends is easy peasy 🫶. And hey, of the three friends who i got to download the game, one’s having the time of their life, that makes it all worth it in the end
I've skipped chunks of it first. It was boring. Then I was told that I'm doing it wrong. So I did it again. Reading everything. It got more boring. As an avid reader and someone who had played a gajillion of JRPGs, ARR doesn't do anything particularly interesting. Or engaging. Or, Lord forbid, fresh. If it's a baby's first RPG/Fantasy Story - sure. If it isn't, outside of side-content that is miles above (I was invested in that Weaver storyline), there's nothing impressive about ARR. Only glib. MSQ cope be damned. Alright, Haurchefant is great in ARR. But they chose to make a character friend-shaped and bro-coded for the first time in the ARR, so maybe that was my bias talking. And his Japanese VA was killing it. But in MSQ they had made me loathe a character voiced by Sawashiro Miyuki and that's a freaking feat.
Sorry, Time to yell at you. DON'T SKIP THE CUTSCENES!!!!! AAAAAAAAAA But seriously, Welcome to Eorzea Fellow Warrior of Light! May you ever walk in the light of the crystal.
Welcome to Eorzea! I hope you enjoy your adventure with your friends and make a lot of great new memories! ARR is a real tough nut to crack as 14 being an MMORPG makes the learning curve quite steep. The game is SO large and SO expansive that entering it with these high expectations set by other players makes the gap of what enfranchised players experience vs new players really wide. That being said, I'm proud of you for sticking with it and really exploring! and here's to more fun moments to come!
a tip for 7:18 There is another Fast travel to Waking sand through Limsa Lominsa, just walk past Arcanist Guild and use the Ferry, it goes to straight to the Waking sand.
When I saw you for the first time in game the other day my face lit up so much. I love seeing more and more people joining up in this game and are enjoying it as much as I did. Also the fact that you snuck around EVERYONE to beat ARR is wild
A friend of mine was legit like you with the Waking Sands. She forgot about the existence of the tickets, and she had like 60 or 70 something of them at that point XD Granted, she didn't play often, but it was hilarious to see her realisation that she didn't need to teleport to Horizon every time she had to go back to Vesper Bay
I played through ARR when it first came out, and again 2 years ago, and it's definitely a much improved experience, especially the post-expac msq. HW was a revelation though, with an actually compelling story and dungeon content, and I really enjoyed it.
So the reason the eight man and twenty four man battle content isn’t soloable with npcs isn’t due to laziness but is just a technical reason. Basically the devs had issues getting the npc ai to work properly in these larger number duties. There are some later eight man duties that have this feature but they were designed with the feature in mind. Also the duty support (solo) feature only applies to MSQ duties. Any duty that is not required for MSQ does not have this duty support and may never get it just due to the game being an mmo and the devs wanting players to engage with other players. Generally other players are very friendly in dungeons and battle content and will help out if you ask them for advice. I’ve played for 5000-6000 hours can count the bad experiences I’ve had on my hand.
ARR feels like a tutorial for the rest of the game and I'm ok with that. After playing through it again recently it's bearable. A solid tutorial and beginning to a legendary game
Fun thing. The guy that created all of the early FF music from 1-12 and beyond, is Nobuo Uematsu. His band that has played everywhere in japan from small venues to large stadiums is called The Black Mages.
Welcome to the game! As someone who also struggled at first, both because I feared that style of raiding I had never played before, and because the story wasn't getting to me, it gets better. People really mind their own business, but are largely understanding and take the time to explain mechanics if you say you're new. There are jerks, but in my experience, they're a minority (thankfully). The story only really started picking up my attention in by the end of ARR patches. Before that, I was really sure I wouldn't be sticking to the game. It's no joke that it does get better. And the side content is where the game really shines, with thousands of possibilities. Don't be afraid of taking breaks in the story and doing other stuff in between.
Funnily enough, I started to enjoy the game more when I tempered my expectations. My friend had been hyping it as the best story he'd ever played, but I found myself burned out and underwhelmed at the start. It wasn't until I started to take my time more and take the breaks I needed that I started to pick up the story events that were happening, and before I knew it I realized I was enjoying myself a lot more. Now looking back at it, after catching up to msq when I finished EW, I do agree with my friend's sentiment on it being one of the best stories he'd ever played. And I enjoy my fair share of JRPG's a lot. It's a slowburn, but please enjoy the journey as you go! Remember, there's absolutely no rush, and you only ever experience the story once. I think it took me almost two years to finally finish, and even then occassionally I'd take month long breaks between expansions. But when it finally clicked, there was no going back. Enjoy your stay in Eorzea!
Id argue to stop skipping somewhere towards the end of ARR. A lot of post-ARR cutscenes aren't half bad and set up the story for Heavensward, although there are still a *couple* I skipped. The majority were enjoyable and flesh out a lot of your characters that you'll be taking with you into Heavensward, i.e. story with Tataru and Alphinaud respectively. But eh, play how you want to play! As long as you're having fun, that's really all that matters yeah?
ARR was on a really tight budget and that shows when it comes to cutscenes. It gets way, way better in the patches after and keeps getting better every expansion, so make sure to actually try to not skip once in a while, so you can judge if it got better.
Don't skip the cut scenes in Heavensward. The story is much better and worth watching. And....the story just gets better in the next expansions. I JUST finished Shadowbringers and holy hell do it surprise me.
Brayflox was a lot harder before. Not just gear and job changes, but the last boss itself got nerfed majorly over time. It was a lot harder when you did it back in the day.
After trying the game 3 times in the past, I never got into it. Last week I started a new character from the start and read everything. Altough I'm still lower level than I previously was on past account, I find this playtrough way more enjoyable why you ask ? I take the time to read most of the MSQ dialog, I have a reason to do every small quest. And it makes it a lot more easy to immerse myself in the world
Heya as someone who was guilty of skipping some cutscenes as well. Fun fact: you can go rewatch cutscenes in any inn room with the unending journal whenever you are in the mood
What do I think about FF14? I think it's an amazing game. The story is amazing, the npc's a re like my friends, it's a wonderful virtual world to escape to when you're feeling down. Or feeling great, that works too. For your skipping story? Well, you do you, who am I to say anything about it. I hope the story catches you later though. And about your anxiety for doing dungeons with other people. Yes, believe me I know exactly how you feel. I am like that too. But I've played FF14 before it had NPC assisted dungeons. Sure, there are some bad apples, but mostly the community is pretty nice. Slowly but surely, I learned to not be so afraid of queuing up for dungeons and trials that I needed. Of course the anxiety is still ever present, but lesser than it was. I can't do multiple of them back to back without resting a little, but I can go in without massively overpreparing myself. And yeah, I don't think people care all that much what you do there, the MSQ stuff and Alliance raids (like Crystal Tower you were doing) are easier stuff and couple of new faces should not make that much difference most of the time. Some of them are of the mind that they are free to watch and learn too. It also can help to mention that you're doing it for the first time, then someone might give you some pointers.
I finally got my sister to play after telling her there was a plugin in the game that virtually made everything voiced. And I don't mean Text to Speech but a proper one that actually sounds like the character.
Welcome to the club, man. Much like you I tried it a long time ago and fell off. But I'm hooked again and mostly thanks to the friends I've made along the way. Hope to bump into you on a random dungeon, trial or raid!
Love that this community will always yell at you for skipping cutscenes. Play how you want to play, I skip them too. Nothing against people that love the story, but I've just never been able to get into it.
Aww yes Final Fantasy 14 my favorite Final Fantasy game that has sooo much content its ridiculous. Actually no maybe FF1 and FFX-2 are still my favorite along with Crystal chronicles but oh man FF14 has sooo much stufff its crazy
0:11 , Yeah, without the concept being so popular there wouldn't so many anime that share this premise. We've seen how anime, manga, and light novels deal with a player solely devoted to only character. It makes me wonder what it would be like to see them tackle an altaholic.
To be fair to your old tank, they changed that dungeon. It used to be a huge difficulty spike for tanks especially. The positioning of that dragon boss was super important because the aoes used to stay. I feel like players in general are way less tryhard than they were back then so I doubt you'll have many (if any) bad experiences like that in normal dungeons now
I’m on the same boat as you! I play 100% alone in this game so I rely mostly on npcs when I do dungeons. I have anxiety as well doing stuff with real people lol. It’s like, you want to be alone and yet you love seeing people running around in your game. It’s like, do not look at my character to please can I have some friends in this game… kinda thing lol
Welcome to Eorzea buddy! I have about 10k hours in this game and still play daily, love it to death xD I gotta agree that ARR does get quite boring, but the payoff later makes it really good. I skipped parts of ARR myself, and have later returned to rewatched cutscenes. So no shame in doing it that way. Hope you enjoy your time with my favorite game! Love from Twintania on Light ❤
Yeahh fair for the cutscene skip, I went to replay the game ans skipped every cutscene until the last few ones of Arr? And the postgame is doing decent about keeping me from skipping, because of some plot stuff that ties in later (and my fav boi in the crystal tower). Plus skipping most cutscenes helped me jump through the early game real quick! (Although personally I only did this cause it was a replay). But I can't blame you at all.
Welcome! :D When I started in 2019, I was warned by pals that I would enjoy it in the descending order of SHB, HW, SB, and ARR. They were spot on. EW was.. good. Feels a bit Deus ex Machina-y to me. My lawyer has advised me not to talk about DT on the internet. But the MSQ does get much more engaging after ARR!
As someone who played Genshin last year and just finished ARR. ARR is 100 times better than anything I experienced in Genshin story wise. That’s one boring ass story but to each their own.
I feel this! Granted there are moments like Furina's bit in 4.2 that are excellently executed but the few moments of greatness are not worth the pain of the rest of the story
Sounds like your tank wasn't best suited for that job. I get back in the day that dungeon was very unforgiving, but only if your tank was going in too aggressive. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that
The dungeon you're talking about around 12 minutes has been changed, both literally and due to level progression changes and combat changes after new expansion releases. Back in ARR, that boss would literally take less damage and heal itself, if you didn't drag it out of the green slime pools and that alone would be enough to wipe a group. Additionally, it applied a cleanseable, stacking damage over time debuff that could easily kill someone if the healer didn't clear it (which, by the way, you had to level white mage to do. Scholar didn't have access to esuna without having leveled white mage and slotting in the ability). A failure in that dungeon could be on either the tank, the healer or both. But if the guy you were talking about was literally standing in the green stuff, he probably didn't move the boss either. It was the first dungeon you couldn't just auto pilot through. Brayflox's Longstop and Stone Vigil were the big difficulty spikes in ARR. I already talked about Bray above. Stone Vigil was the first time the tank's ability to keep aggro was tested, and there were some really nasty enemies in there that did a lot of burst damage (ice elementals), that would test the healer and the dps' ability to focus fire
ah dont worry skipping cutscenes is fine people are just salty people with the story people really let people play games how they like it dont press ur opinion on everyone
the story was kinda boring for me, and except everyone tells you the game has a lot more content than msq grinding, is a very social game and you have acess to most of things even before completing msq so is not a rush to do a run away to get to the end game
Honestly, I recommend just skimming through the story rather than skipping the cutscenes. Just so you sorta know what the hell is going on so you can pick up once it does get interesting. Nobody cares if you’re a sprout and mess up. They might give some pointers if you fuck up, though.
Just play however you want, people malding because you're skipping but not everyone has the patience to play a visualnovel of LITERALLY 159hours of cutscenes without including text boxes, thats like playing 4-5 games, the average playtime to reach max last expansion was 300-600h played, I have seasons of not wanting to read a lot, others craving for it, you can always go back to the Inn and watch cutscenes or check some cool Lore videos
If I could give this video 10K Likes, I would! I was laughing, smiling, and crying because I went through much of the same thing with anxiety and all! I was stalled in the game for years because I was afraid to play with other people, afraid of messing up. But I loved the world and the other things you could do in it! Then I heard about in game nightclubs and decided I wanted to check them out. So I made a new character and long story short, found an amazing FC, and made some wonderful friends which really made me happy and pulled me into the game! So I'm so happy for you that you're enjoying the game and can share it with your friends!
here's the thing about ARR, it was done over the course of like a year/year and a half while also updating 1.0 to work towards the end of that and the start of 2.0. The voice acting was done in a rush with like zero direction from a director, the VAs were all separate when doing their voices, it's so bad. Hell, the VAs didn't even know what they were voicing for! So you can't blame them for it not sounding good, especially when there's a lot of really good voice actors there. On top of that, apparently the localization changed a lot of things for the worst. On the bright side, not only are there new VAs for Heavensward but everything just gets so much better.
Given that, I'm actually surprised they got a couple of roles where the VA was consistantly good. I will still stand by ARR Merlwyb being as good as anything that came after. Not that she ever gets many spoken lines.
@@tylorhobbs8920 ARR Merlwyb was soooo good, I miss her. And there were a few VAs that stuck around into HW and later because they were introduced in patch content.
The reason why the story couldn't keep you engaged is because you're not smart like the average FF14 player... or it's extremely overpraised for being a 5/10 writing most of the time.

Couldn't agree more.
ARR ended up being tied with my favorite FF (8) for just pulling me into its world.

I feel like The Golden Saucer hooks so many people 😂
If I see one more meme of my wife asking people to return to some place, I'm gonna flip the table...
I have about 10k hours in this game and still play daily, love it to death xD
I gotta agree that ARR does get quite boring, but the payoff later makes it really good. I skipped parts of ARR myself, and have later returned to rewatched cutscenes. So no shame in doing it that way.
Hope you enjoy your time with my favorite game! Love from Twintania on Light ❤
Soon you will have emotional vampires descend upon you like a hunt train upon an S-rank mark
But I can't blame you at all.
welcome to hydaleyn love and if you want someone to help with anything ive been playing since 1.0 beta
LETS GO MIKAN! I'M HAPPY YOU PLAYED A MMORPG I LOVE!
As someone who played Genshin last year and just finished ARR. ARR is 100 times better than anything I experienced in Genshin story wise. That’s one boring ass story but to each their own.
I feel this! Granted there are moments like Furina's bit in 4.2 that are excellently executed but the few moments of greatness are not worth the pain of the rest of the story
i can't believe you did this to us. amazing work by the way
Sounds like your tank wasn't best suited for that job. I get back in the day that dungeon was very unforgiving, but only if your tank was going in too aggressive. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that
WELCOME TO FFXIV!
Shame I can't travel to play with your character, but you can always come visit us in the OCE server.
Welcome to Eorzea! I hope you continue having fun 🙌
YEEESSSS!!! Love this for you
10:10 no way you just spoiled me the msq
@@teroril Oh, this is good to know! I was so baffled as to why it was such a struggle all those years ago!
ah dont worry skipping cutscenes is fine people are just salty people with the story
people really let people play games how they like it dont press ur opinion on everyone
the story was kinda boring for me, and except everyone tells you the game has a lot more content than msq grinding, is a very social game and you have acess to most of things even before completing msq so is not a rush to do a run away to get to the end game
Good times. Hope you keep up with ffxiv.
Honestly, I recommend just skimming through the story rather than skipping the cutscenes. Just so you sorta know what the hell is going on so you can pick up once it does get interesting. Nobody cares if you’re a sprout and mess up. They might give some pointers if you fuck up, though.
I have no idea who you are, but welcome to the family
Glad to see you took an interest in FF14 again :D
Wait…. You can buy a house?
HEAVENSWARD LETSGO
i enjoy the story of ffxiv, but skipping cutscenes is fine lol. Enjoy it how *you* wish to enjoy it.
Best secret decision ever ! :D
here's the thing about ARR, it was done over the course of like a year/year and a half while also updating 1.0 to work towards the end of that and the start of 2.0.
Not that she ever gets many spoken lines.
....is anyone going to tell him about Wuk's English voice?
@jamesrusselleriii8284 it was one line out of 100s. Get over it already.
@@tylorhobbs8920 ARR Merlwyb was soooo good, I miss her. And there were a few VAs that stuck around into HW and later because they were introduced in patch content.
Go get arcanist that is still magical and you heal too egg might be right if you did that
Escape while you can.

Ff14 is great though the story got alot of low points especially in ARR but the gameplay is fun and the community is usually nice
The reason why the story couldn't keep you engaged is because you're not smart like the average FF14 player... or it's extremely overpraised for being a 5/10 writing most of the time.
skip all cutscenes you want man, don't let the toxic community dictates how you play.
