Tough injury Ben. I had something like that about 2 years ago where I had some sort of issue with my back. Basically an issue called spondylolisthesis. It never goes away completely and you basically work around it by doing core exercises. I've gone to physical therapy as well to help address it. But when I had it at its worst, I could hardly run more than 10 yards. Some days, with it, I could run 10 miles but more often than not it stopped me in my tracks. Take care of it and getting it addressed. I am hoping for a speedy recovery for you. Your running / videos continue to inspire me to work hard. Been following your progress for years and I love to see where you have come.

@@BenIsRunningget better soon Ben... 👍🏻I'm a 7minute km runner and I guide my V I friend at races.. Just 3 days ago we ran a LGBTQAI race only 8km but very hilly and I nearly pulled out for first time ever as I took terrible pain in my back ( probably the massive hills).. 😬Had too keep going though as I wanted the goody bag and beautiful running top!!❤...not run since as my back is in agony just waiting too see physio... You did the right thing stopping I did the wrong thing carrying on... But that's what runners do...🙈All the best much love from glasgow... #keeponkeepingon... 🏃🏼‍♂️😁🤞x

As an “older” runner (45) I have suffered quite a lot of injuries myself in the past few years. Despite preventive physio, power training, a technique coach. Injuries are tough. A very speedy recovery and hopefully you will be injury free after this for many years to come. 🙏☀️

Hi Ben. As a doctor and a runner I wish you well. Disc bulges are very common in the lower back as the bones aren't directly on top of each other so they are shaped more like a cheese wedge. This makes the L4/5 and L5/S1 discs the most common to bulge (the bottom 2 discs). They bulge out backwards into the spinal canal and press the nerves which is why you get the pain. The vast majority of these will correct themselves with time so I hope you get better soon. The annular tear doesn't usually mean anything clinically. Good luck with the recovery and hope to see vids of you getting PBs soon

  • @michaelcannon7640
    @michaelcannon7640 24 дня назад +18

Ben, as someone with some knowledge on this, most adults have some degree of disc bulges in their back. Sometimes little things can cause them to become symptomatic. I recently had a long drive for work followed by a mentally stressful day of sitting in a court room that ended with another long drive home. Was about 14 hours in total. The next day my back was aching bad as well. It got gradually better. This is typical for me. I’m not nearly as good of a runner as you, but like you, running is good for my mental health. Nevertheless, I did take some extra rest days. I bet you’ll be back and running in no time. You might consult with a physical therapist. I’ll bet you they can give you some exercises to help prevent any long term problems.

I am a runner with a bulged disc in between my L5 + S1. In fact I actually injured myself in a non running related situation. I’ve been able to manage for the past 5 years now through comprehensive daily stretching and warmups. I hope and pray that your outcome will be the same. There are days where my back hurts very seriously when I wake up but a few stretches gets me right as rain. Cheers mate. Hope the best for you!

Speedy recovery Ben! I'm a neurosurgeon at the University of Szeged, Department of Neurosurgery, if you need any answer or help (and also a long time subscriber)! I'm recommending you personalized McKenzie physiotherapy and maybe decompressive manual therapy on first hand. Runners weakest point is usually the lower back what we may need to strenghten as well (Kettlebell for example, as you also had videos with!) Wishing you all the best!!

Hi Ben. I’m 63 and been running seriously for 15 years. I’ve lived with the same back problem for 20 years. Every now and then it rears it ugly head but I’ve learned as I’ve got older not to wait until it does before I see the physio and now go to see him regularly ( every 3 months) for general loosening of the spine and mot and it’s paid off. Also since I turned 50 I’ve introduced Pilates into my routine which has definitely helped. My physio is great believer in staying mobile as much as possible after back injury and I’m certain that helps. Hope you get better and we see you back to running soon my friend 👍

I have the same issue. Traction has helped me. The vertebrae are pulled apart for a few seconds at a time, allowing the bulged out part of the disc to regress , relieving the pressure on the nerves and thereby the pain. If your condition persists despite your efforts, this is something probably worth looking into.

Running really is unforgiving :( I accidentally jumped my load too quickly with speed work and sprints and hills and I’ve been out for months due to muscle imbalance in my hips and legs. Have been doing PT but I really messed myself up. It started out as a tweak in my back and that was rooted from my hips, and led to a sharp pain in my knee. But I have been doings lot of hip exercises to try to balance things out. Just something to possibly consider of where an imbalance could be? Could maybe get a professional to assess your strength and see? Obviously do what’s best just hope this helps and gives something to consider. If not just regardless wishing you a speedy recovery :) cheers man (sorry for long comment :/ )

Remember one thing Ben. Life isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. You are quite young and it would be a shame to try to rush through rehab on a serious injury and possibly end your competitive future. Listen to your body and next time running hurts, stop! Don’t be a hero, it usually doesn’t help. Pain is your body telling you something is wrong. I don’t mean muscle soreness, which is often painful, but real, honest pain which comes from injury. Know when to say when. Pushing through just isn’t worth the risk. Take care of your health! Take it from someone who knows. And I learned the hard way.

I got diagnosed with a herniated/bulging disc last year. It’s really brutal especially if it’s pressing against your nerve roots, which for me it was. I lost all strength and in my left calf and my leg was numb for about 7 months. It’s been a brutal injury to heal from as it put me out of running and cycling until just a few months ago. I gained about 15-20lbs and happy to say that now that I can cycle again I’ve lost that weight. Please be easy on yourself. If you have an annular tear that means the outer layer of your intervertebral disc is weak and you wouldn’t want to weaken it further and have a full rupture. If those contents spill out they have nowhere to go aside from being pressed on those nerve roots. That can cause lifelong pain and muscle weakness. My advice is to take it even easier than you think you should.

Hi Ben, very sorry to hear about your injury. It sounds like at least you can do some crosstraining, though a word of caution about the bike. Personally, I've done quite a lot of cycling in my youth, and it often gave me a tired lower back. I've even heard professional cyclists mention that, and of course yesterday Demi Vollering lost the women's Tour de France in part because her back still hurt, and you need a strong back when you're cycling up a hill. Long story short - be careful not to overdo the cycling 🙂, and I hope you have fun with your cross training activities.

I would look into those shoes you wear. A lot of recent studies suggesting the huge stack height leads to instability which may cause ankle, knee and back inuries. Some people are also saying that the high energy return from carbon plated shoes comes at a cost. They suggest that the extra energy is being absorbed by the back or knees. There's always a trade off with these things.

Oh, Ben, I feel for you. 6 weeks ago, I got pain in my quad, the next day shin, the 3rd day after getting up and going to the bathroom. pain in my right leg was so bad I collapsed. I spent a day in A&E on an ECG machine heart ok but think I may have sciatica. I eventually got an MRI scan on Saturday, and I'm waiting for my diagnosis. My osteo thinks it's L3/L4 in my spine and could be like you a bulge. The pain has now stopped in my lower leg, but I get stiffness and mild pain in my right quad, I've been doing a lot of mobility and S&C and stretching. I found on RUclips "run better with Ash" his channel is superb, loads of follow along content coverage whole range of workouts, stretching etc he is brilliant.
I can run without pain but my right quad gets a feeling like DOMS after 3/4 mile, so that's what I'm sticking with until my results come back. I wish you well and hope it mends OK.
    I'm 69 and miss running.

Ben, I ached just watching this. :( Pain is no fun, and that's especially true when it's coming from your back. (Says the longtime scoliosis sufferer!) And calling it quits partway through the race was, I wager, both the right decision AND the courageous one--because it almost woulda been easier for you to keep going out of pride...But then you'da really paid for it later. I hope you figure this out and vanquish it! We're sending you strength in the meantime!

Hi Ben. I’m 66 and had a duff back from overloading it at work for many years. Always gets better and running is the best for it.
Kept active and it will settle down.
    All the best

Damn that is a really bummer. It feels like you can't seem to catch a break. Well, if you would like to understand more about the complexity of back injuries --> check out Dr. Stuart McGill. He did a podcast with Peter Attia on 'The Drive' Podcast 287.
I have been dealing with disc bulges for over a decade myself. Haven't had a huge flare-up in a while. I do the McGill big 3 routine on a daily basis and make sure to walk daily. The body adapts, and I think you know this all too well. Good luck!

I'm sorry about your injury. I had the same 6 I am nowhere near as fit as you. I was actually unable to walk at one point i was given a steriod dose pack and 6 weeks with rest, physio and specific mobility work. Better than ever. Best of luck in your healing.

I had a similar injury myself a few years ago, the key is to LET IT HEAL. Its gonna be tempting to do more and more as you heal but DONT PUSH IT. A 4 to 6 week injury can turn into 8 to 10 weeks very easy.
