"New York doesn't crap on other cities 'cuz it doesn't need to" may be the most perfect line ever uttered. I'd love to put it on a t-shirt. Tom, your videos are the best quality videos about New York City bar none! Thank you.
Enjoy all of Tom's videos! I'll have to say, I'm living my life vicariously through him. He has a wealth of information on every neighborhood he walks through . Honestly, the best way to explore is on foot or cycling through it. A car or a bus just doesn't give you the same experience. I feel like I've been to these places from watching his travel videos.
The High Line is one of my favorite places to go when I visit! It's a terrific walk in any season. It's such a wonderful treasure, it never disappoints!
Tom is my favorite New York City tour guide because he actually knows the history in depth, and that really enhances his walks around the city. Anyone can walk around the city with a video camera, but it's the information he gives on the history and culture that make it so much more interesting for people who are not from New York City. And he does it with a sense of humor. Terrific!
Only a few people will understand and appreciate that the Meat Packing District will forever be Nelson Sullivan's neighbor; he is the godfather of first-person walking videos. Tom you walked right by his old house. Amazing how much this neighborhood has changed great video Tom
Absolutely. I found his videos on youtube a few years back. He documented an amazing period in time for NY and the people and culture there. They really are invaluable.
I believe 5 9th Ave Meatpacking is a house Gallary now and yes He Was Nelson a RUclipsr in the 80's a visionary man filming around the city days and nights was frieds with RuPaul and all of them, Great times and video Tom.
Nelson Sullivan's videos are probably THE most extraordinary first-person documents of 1980s New York City. I've lived here all my life and am a licensed NYC sightseeing guide, and I tell people to watch Nelson's videos every chance I get. The human quality in them is priceless.
I've lived in NYC (specifically Manhattan-Upper West Side) for the past 40 years and I've NEVER walked around the Meat Packing District.... craaaazy, I know. I've been down 14th Street in a car heading towards the West Side highway, but never on foot. Thanks for showing a native New Yorker a part of the city he never knew. Appreciate you pal 👍
You walked right by Nelson Sullivan's house at Gansevoort and Ninth Avenue who is largely credited with being the first pre-internet vloggers. He documented a lot of street scene video in NY in the late 70's and early 80's and lots of video from RuPaul's early carrier in NY and Atlanta as well.
Tom i hope you reading this,,,,,,,,,,came home from store i had pretty much a bad morning noon day i just wanted to get home i only go out if i need groceries palm springs pretty empty now,,,so i seen you posted this new video WOW!!!! i just love seeing your videos you made me laugh so muchhhhh but very interesting every thing you say of history of nyc you know so much is so good i love it you made my day now please never change how you are very handsome to,,,jijijijij dont worry im 66 yrs old i consider you my son,,,well keep up the good job you do for us and please stay safe i know you do,,,,,,,and thank you again we love you here in my home,,,bless you
I liked your reference to ho much Manhattan has turned into a haven for franchises. A friend from NYC told me that if I wanted to see what Manhattan used to look like, I should go to the Bronx.
I cannot believe how much info and fact's this chap has - Tom you are brilliant. Love your passion for your city. Hollywood - sign this chap up - quick! :-)
Its actually nicer seeing streets empty as you get to see more of the, buildings, shops and art whilst listening to Tom. Relaaaaaax, I've got my mask on. Chill.
Speaking of the Titanic, the “Jane Hotel” on Jane Street in the Village, housed some of the survivors. I stayed there once, Beautiful hotel, has a lot old world charm😊
LA native here. I never felt a rivalry with any city. When I can get away I love to visit Chicago. Tom makes me want to go back to NYC and give it another chance! So bummed Gem Spa couldn't make it 😭😭😭
I visited a restaurant called the Florent Café there in the late 80's early 90's. Great place....the food was awesome and Bruce the host was a sweetheart. My good friend brought me there for one of my birthdays...
Every time I'm in NY I spend sunday afternoon at the meatpacking district. Get something to eat. Check out the galleries. I was there for an art walk that takes place on and it packed. Great job Tom!!
Liked that bit towards the end where you mentioned how NYC is about small businesses and family owned run places. Too many cities in the world is full of chain restaurants and businesses.
Hello, my dear, new friend. Here it is 10.03 pm and I signed up to your channel because I think your cultural stories are interesting. Thanks for culturing us. Hello. Take care. Stay safe. 😊👍
I left New York a year after the high line was built. That is was one of the fastest growing developments. I've seen action kids video on it and I didn't recognize most of the buildings.
I can totally see Tom standing under an awning in the Meatpacking District showing off his goods. And by that, I mean knowledge of course. Not his meat. Great video!
No point in daring us, no one does or gives more..... FOR FREE.... FOR BLOODY FREE...Thank you TD.... Hopefully I'll be back in NYC next year and will defo book a personelised tour... best ever.... and more SICK PLUGS.....
Cool videos! My wife and I visited this area of NYC in summer of 2015 and ate at Hector's diner almost every day because it was so cheap and close to The Jane where we stayed. We were able to go in Hogs and Heifers bar before it closed, also walked the high line the whole length. Awesome area of the city to visit but could not imagine living there! We also biked the whole time with the free loaner bikes from The Jane Hotel.
Good way to spend my lunch half-hour, Tomas. I think you should run for office. Or propose that NYC has an Ambassador of its history. Have done the Hi-Line twice, once in the snow. Lovely walk, all of it. Thanks for a great tour.
Tom, you do an awesome job on giving us the history of New York City. When everything gets back to normal , and my family can visit the city again . I hope you'll be doing tours , and I never miss a video. Thanks again !! Have a great week
There are many great cities out there and we dont know how and when they will recover. People can have an opinion but there is no city that can ever have the diversity and vibrancy and that intangible feeling that nyc and its neighbouring boroughs had and will have again. It truly is the main crossroad of the world.
Love the channel. As a native New Yorker and growing up mostly in GV/Meatpacking (87-97) it makes me super nostalgic. Fun fact: Tina Turner filmed the video for “what’s love gotta do with it” across the street from my building on Horatio st. RIP to Dizzy Izzy’s bagels.
Very good educational, historic tour and humor along with the funny sound effects and video shots. Bravo, Tom and Phil! Wishing you both profitable, very happy and peaceful holidays.
Just found you yesterday and have taken about ten of your virtual tours so far! Great work! Great insights! And I'm glad you're doing it in a socially conscious way, speaking the truth about corporatism and gentrification. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
I really enjoy the pace of your videos and your energetic way of explaining literally SO much about NYC. Mystery man Phil must be exhausted keeping up with you!! Lol. Thanks for giving us all our NYC fix while we can't visit from Canada ..... yet. Can't wait for your next video, or Phildeo?

You Stand Alone in the depth of your vast knowledge when it comes to New York City Bro which is why watching your videos is so enjoyable. I'm constantly learning shit & I'm fuckin 50 so I thought I pretty much thought I knew all there was to know!!! Lol
I used to work in the building across from Chelsea Market (shown at :56). The second floor is the US HQ of Moët Hennessy, but they will be moving out soon. The entire area is great. I have to say that the Starbucks Reserve does have a great whiskey barrel aged cold brew though. Sad you didn’t point out the home of a true vlogging pioneer, Nelson Sullivan, which was to your right at 15:35. His videos documented so much of that area in the 80s and he was friends with a lot of people from the scene, including RuPaul.
Wow, it still looks like a bakery area and packing company area, still. It didn’t change. Lots of family, including me, worked in those industries for a period. Today, some have shows, or had shows on the Food Network in that Google building etc…. Nice! Thanks!
I think you are the best of all among the walking tours. As soon as I get some money, I'll contribute. Been assisting my youngest sister at the tune of $350 a month for a year due to pandemic. Now that's done I can assist (next month).
I was not expecting Spice Girls knowledge being dropped in this. Tom is the man.

I'm convinced you've seen all the sex and the city episodes.

Tom, @historychannel should partner with you and sponsor some special segments on your channel.
I agree ! ;-)
New York's finest and best, amazing actor, tour-guide, stand up comedian, ten points and sick plug sound effect in one!
Nelson Sullivan's former house is in that area at the south end of Ninth Avenue. He was a pioneer of street video.
I’ve watched so many of his videos, gentle soul
