- Rotrex Supercharged 1990 NA Mazda Miata Review
Today I got to drive a 1990 Mazda Miata with a 1.8L Swap and Track Dog Racing Rotrex Supercharger Kit. This car made 245whp and was great fun! Enjoy!

i'm running the same power numbers but with a 1.6 turbo. i do wish the power was more linear but when i'm having fun the turbo lag is hilarious. awesome miata, thanks for making this video
Haha yeah I know what you mean. Sometimes the turbo lag just adds to the experience and is good fun! Thanks for watching the video!
Gotta love the rotrex! It's very efficient and being centrifugal, it's not crazy harsh on components. I ran a c38-92 on my auto acura tl and maxed out the supercharger at 12.7psi. Made 484whp and 385wtq at 11.7 psi on the dyno. Sadly I broke a sleeve but man was it fun to drive! Peak power at red line naturally as the more rpm = more boost = more power
Those are some impressive numbers! I bet it was fun as hell while it lasted.
Looks like an awesome car! My favorite is when ever you start going hard and Nick immediately stops talking and starts to casually hang on for his life. I'm very familiar with that feeling 😂
Jonathan Barlow lmao that you are!
Nice review buddy and nice car Nick!
Thanks broski! Loved this car!
Glad it was just a squirrel and not a deer!
I freaking love the door panels!
They are pretty sweet!
That passenger sun visor hang tho lol Was the very first thing I fixed when i bough my '03. Was so annoying
Uriah Siner I just took mine out, they’re useless if you’re taller than 5’5”
@@alexchulzhanov Mine work well for me, especially when driving home on the highway directly toward the sunset
I sat in an NA miata recently and I'd have to remove the sun visors if I got one. At 6'1" they actually block my view of the road, even when folded up.
Would’ve been nice to get a full build over view of the car
Christian Lopez we’ll be releasing a video on this car on my team RUclips channel The Slip Angle with track testing and more details of the build. Check out the channel if you’d like. We are doing an ultimate Miata shootout series to compare different set ups. This was just a quick street drive. I Did what I could with the time I had!
DriveItRyan oh nice I didn’t know you were part of there crew I’m gonna have to wait for that video to come out. I’ve been trying to get more info on the TDR kit but the only info I can find is on the kraftwerks kit.
Christian Lopez yeah I talked to the owner about that. You have to call up Trackdog Racing for information on the kit and they’ll build it for you based on your needs over the phone.
new sub... love the content and edit. great to see a Miata review
Driftin Smurfette thanks for subbing! I’ll sub back. You a local ct guy?
@@DriveItRyan no but im near lol NJ . any advice or buyer tips for 1.6 Miata supercharger. such as must and don't
@@DriftinSmurfette My personal miata isn't supercharged yet, but I would do ARP headstuds and upgrade your clutch beforehand. A coolant reroute with an aluminum radiator isn't a bad idea either. Give trackdog racing a call. They'll help you put together everything you need!
I still want one even though they're very expensive
Very expensive?
The track dog racing kit costs $4900, it’s quite expensive
@@ericsson_motorsports "quite"🤣
I'm curious to know what engine management you used on this car.
i want those low profile headlights eventually
Hope you all enjoyed the video! Who else is running a rotrex kit and what are your thoughts?
Do you prefer this to a turbo?
@@WindingMaster I haven't driven a turbo Miata, but compared to other turbo cars I've driven, it feels like N/A, with a bit more power, especially up top. You don't get that big rush of boost, but definitely quick. It's really a matter of personal preference.
okterrific29 well said!
WindingMaster I have always loved turbo cars. This was the first rotrex car I have ever driven but I do have to say I love how progressive the powerband is. I think I’m going to do a rotrex Kit on my Miata though. It’s less harsh on the drivetrain and internals since it doesn’t make massive amounts of Torque down low. I hope this answered your question!
Thanks for not posting a generic response like most would. I also appreciate those things about it. Is it a restricted kit (sounds like it's not) & was it a C30-84 blower or C30-94 (I'm guessing -84)? Is the mid range sufficient enough to keep up with most quick comparable cars or is there more to be desired? We don't have the Trackdog kit in Aus but I'm thinking it may be worth the extra cost to get one here. When you do yours & Quinn does a K-swap organise another shootout... That should be epic! Subscribed!
How come some superchargers whine and some don't.
Pewwbz the Rotrex is a belt driven centrifugal supercharger. Think of it as a belt driven turbo, which is why it makes similar turbo noises. Roots style superchargers are an entirely different design and tend to make that classic supercharger whine you are thinking of.
@@DriveItRyan ah I see thank you. 😊
what is the pulley size?
Do you have AC and PS???
Great Road when there is no traffic!
Indeed it is!
I have a 1973 mini I want to put a rotrex in. It's a nice compact install bit I do have reservations about reliability. Should I?
All I can say is that I am going to try it out! This kit was on a friends car, and so far he hasn't had any rotrex related issues.
The most dope!
How hard is it to find someone to install and tune them I got a 6 cylinder commodore
Depends on where you are from but these Rotrex kits are relatively straight forward to install. I’m not sure who makes a kit for the commodore though.
Does supercharged have better response & low end than turbocharged? Does it require more maintenance or checking as modified? Is there now a difference in reliability?
Depends on the turbo id say. i switched from an C15-60 Roxtrex Supercharger to an EFR 6758 Turbo. Eventho we have a difference of 200 HP (Rotrex Kit made 200 HP, EFR will make 400 HP) and a hell lot of boost difference, id say the EFR response is equal to the Supercharger. You can go with cheaper Garrett Turbos or TD04. The EFR hits fullboost at 2800 RPM and got the power to push through the very end (7500 RPM). The Rotrex need RPM to work as well. under 2500 RPMish it doesnt do shit.
I tell everyone that superchargers are the only way to go for fun. Turbo charging ruins the driving experience thats with every car ever made
Has that Rotrex given you any problems? I wanna buy the kit but it seems that the Supercharger doesn't last more than 2 years
I've been in touch with the owner of this car and he hasn't had any issues with the Rotrex. I believe you just have to make sure it is getting the proper amount of clean oil and it should be good!
At 11:41, the most awkward moment for 2 dudes in a Miata.
lol I was just trying to figure out why my go pro shut off :(
can you get a kit for the mk2.5 1.8?
Thanks for the video . ? Is this a kit That you installed ? I like a supercharger but alo t of guys r putting turbos in the miata . thanks again .
MrSprintcat this was my buddies car that I just reviewed, but I liked it so much that I’ll probably be installing this kit on my Miata!
That's cool . I here the turbo can beat up a motor.😂
Great review ! I don’t suppose you know the 0-60mph time?
Not off hand, but it feels quick! I'll have to ask the owner to come back for some more testing to get the exact numbers :)
Hitting a deer would kill
Cool Mac yes, yes it would
does it really have belt slip at only 7000rpm? I was thinking about a rotrex c30-94 on a b18 vtec 8500rpm. maybe that's not a good idea
I'm not sure if it still slips at 7000rpm's. I think he mentioned it only did a few times during dyno tuning.
More powerful than what Eaton blower? The M62 and TVS900 will both make at least as much power as the Rotrex and they will produce considerably more power and torque thru the entire rev range. The Rotrex is the WORST of both worlds- it's a supercharger with continuous boost lag all the way to redline. Makes less torque than a turbo or supercharger and less power everywhere except at 7,000 rpm. Why anyone would think the Rotrex is a good choice is beyond me.
I have a good reason: idle. The Rotrex kit doesn't require you to move the throttle body to before the supercharger, which would, such as with the MP62, force you to move the idler control valve way out of the way. The combination of a huge volume post throttle and a huge volume in the lines around the ICV leaves you with a car that absolutely hates to idle. The low end torque of an MP62 is quite the kick though.
@@gerardgeer642 idk, my M45 car idles great.
@@Carguylogan MP62s don't.
@@gerardgeer642 you don't have to move the TB pre charger for roots SC. You can run a bypass between SC intake and exhaust when TB is closed
I ran a rotrex on my stock 200,000+ k20 swapped civic. Made over 500 hp to the wheels. 3 years of nothing but abuse and track passes and not a single issue with it. And it's instant power. 10/10 would do again.
To me its seems someones out there selling make-beleive. Has someone dynoed this
The owner has dynoed the car and it made 245 whp. No lies here!
What's the 0-60 time? Has the owner reinforced the engine ?
@@Peugot905 no need with a rotrex because it doesn't make much torque
