  • Brazil has been an important market for VW ever since it began exporting its iconic Beetle and VW van there back in the 1950s. Strong sales in the South American country helped make the German carmaker one of the biggest manufacturers in the world.

    I'm from the Philippines, this was the only Volkswagen model that was somewhat popular in our country other than the original Beetle and the Kombi van. For some reason, Volkswagens were never big here. You will be lucky to come across a Golf or Jetta over here.

    This is the VW Brasilia LS, "Luxury Standard" version of VW Brasilia and this is unfortunately not a joke. In Brasil 50% of the value of "all this Luxury Standard" was for the Brazilian government through taxes and only 50% of all this "Luxury Standard" went to the buyer. This explains why the Luxury Standard version had nothing luxurious. :D
    The low purchasing power of the Brazilian and high taxes, causes this situation, the automakers here create cars with versions that get to be funny. (nothing against the car, I would love to have one of these)
    Even today the Brazilian buys "VW Brasilia" paying the equivalent of a "VW PASSAT"
    I'm proud of my country, but there are still people who think that socialism and the best way ( WTF!! )
    (Sorry my english "Made in China") :D

    Concorrentes eram
    Fiat 147
    Chevrolet Chevett
    Ford Corcel

    The interesting bit is at the time the VW Passat was not that much more expensive than the Brasilia, but a much more modern car. I think a lot of Brasilia's sales were due to the Beetle's popularity at the time - the Brasilia was the "improved Beetle."

  • @fr_schmidlin
    @fr_schmidlin 3 года назад +1

    The VW Gol mk1 was just a shorter version of the Brasilia (codenamed "Brasiliete"), with the engine moved to the front, amongst other improvements. In that regard, the Brasillia outlived the Beetle by many years.

      Doginu I think the 412 had the flat style of engine fan & more cargo space?

    • @marciliofarias744
      @marciliofarias744 6 лет назад

      Doginu I think the VW 412 was already far superior to VW Brasilia. In a "brief expression" Brasilia is very similar to a Beetle until 1967 (of those manufactured until 1967 in Germany). Basically it is a "Beetle 1967" with different bodywork, with greater internal space and "superior finish" to the Beetle producing in Brazil. The engine, suspension and everything else is practically a Beetle until 1967 (try not to laugh :D ). Volkswagen in Brazil did not follow VW's improvements in Germany and VW Brasilia was probably a car to give "survival" to "production of air-cooled cars" (in a probable attempt of future substitute of the Beetle). I know it's a very simple car, but for Brazil's standard it was quite reasonable. Here in Brazil, my father and two uncles had this model of car and it was common on Sundays to see three of them parked in front of my grandparents' house :D
      This car was very well accepted by the Brazilian market and was discontinued to make way for the VW Gol (it seems rather the first Golf model and it had air cooled engine, but it was in the front of the car in the first years of production)
      I have never had a chance to see a VW412 in person, but from what I see it was a much superior car in every way except in the design issue (and sadly there are no VW412 in Brazil)
      (sorry, my English "Made in China") :D

    Why did vw not use the flat type 3 engine set up so it had a more useable rear luggage area?? That combined with the super beetles front suspension would have made this a very very useful car

      At that time , the VW Brasília's project wanted a compact vehicle. The type 3 engine , needed a bigger platform. However, later the Brasilian 'Variant II' was designed using the engine of the type 3.
