  • The Volkswagen Beetle convertible is a popular choice among fans of open-top driving. The first prototype was made back in 1936, but it was not until 1949 that volume production began. The convertible versions were always based on the most powerful and expensive Beetle available at the time. Drive It! puts the 1979 edition through its paces. It is driven by the 1.6-liter engine taken from the 1303 S, produced as of 1972. Delivering 50 hp it was the most powerful production Beetle engine of its era.

At 1st I thought this was the 78 champagne edition. I have Champagne edition version and have had it since it was new. It was my sister's for the 1st part of its life and then it became mine. I will never sell that car.

I have a 71 Super Beetle Cabriolet, and my dash and steering wheel look completely different.

1971 was the first year for the Super Beetle in USA. Still had flat windscreen and dash. Model year 1973 curved windshield and a more formal dash was introduced. As per VW advertising at the time : " Open wide and say ahhhhhh ...."

The Super Beetle in this youtube video is missing the signature enlarged turn signal/parking light clusters which are supposed to be mounted on the top of the front fenders. What happened?

Mexican beetle's started housing the turn signals in the bumpers.

'74 on cabrio Beetles for the US market had running lights in the indicators on the top of the wings, all other markets had the turn signals in the front bumper, as per the car here

Yes but that is for U.S…in-bumper indicators are original setup for Euro spec cars. There are many other actual problems here if you are seeking originality. The steering wheel, center console, wheels, the missing window stop rubber at the top of the felt channel…oh the ENTIRE ENGINE lol. Still a beauty and glad to see it showcased.

This is a restored car. While nice, it is not as original. That being the case, it is not representative of an actual Super Beetle. There are significant modifications including the engine, paint and fenders..
