Unless you're in the US, there is the new Renault Twingo, Rear wheel drive and rear engined, but if you're from the US, the Smart Fortwo which will be launched there shares 70% of the parts with the Twingo.
I am a proud owner of a 1998 Mexican Bug. Since I was a kid I was surrounded by aircooled VWs as most of my family members had one: 5 bugs, 1 Brasilia, 1 Kombi. I set myself a goal to fulfill my dream of having a brand new one here in Mexico. When they stopped producing it in 2003, I literally cried as I had no way of getting my bug, since I was 18, in high school, and I didin't have a job, and if I had it, by no means I would've afforded it. I bought my 98 3 years ago and I'm trying very hard to keep it as preserved as possible. Though if I ever buy a 2003 in pristine conditions, then I will be able to fulfill my dream.
+montgomery scott I bought my 1980 Mexican Beetle in Celaya Mexico for a window airconditioner and two large Barbie doll houses. I have had "Max" for 6 years now and I have had nothing but a major repair every month I have had him. So far completly rebuilt the engine, rebuilt tranny from mexico, end of the mastercylinder blew the brake light sensor out. Since it has only a one chamber brake system had no brakes. Brake line blew out. 3 clutch cables, carb, dizzy, engine fan, fire, I have learned more about automobile engines than I ever did owning a 1950 ford a 1966 ford a 1954 chevrolet a1955 Buick. It hates me!
I just bought my 3rd beetle (74 super conv) it my first one since 1995( 74 super hard to) which I've always missed 1st was in highschool 1988 it was a "59" but with this new one I'm happy as can be
One of the greatest videos i've seen. Long live the Volkswagen. If you never driven one of these, force yourself to do so. It might just be the last car you ever drive.
Chicken, make sure you drive the original versions, air-cooled. You haven't lived until you've driven something with the pedals coming out of the floor! HAHA...quite a sensation.
i had an option a Honda Civic in an exelent condition or to buy my old beetle, and i got the old beetle, not exactly perfect, i had to repair a lot of things from brakes to the engine and even so, i love my bug, is something i can not explain, i had a Geo Prizm before but it was a car this is something more, and alway is a joy ride in my bug,
"It might just be the last car you ever drive" Correct because the engine is in the back, they don't have airbags and the engine will come smashing through the back to kill you in a collision.
Gunther Ultrabolt Novacrunch yes has a the engine in the back as the Porshce, Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Bugatti and the air bag only increase the posibility of you survive 10%, i do not see your point, and besides that is car that you actually enjoy to drive. and if you get one you will love it and never want to drive any other car,
Most manufactured car of all time = Toyota Corolla. The beetle was at one point, yes, but not for twenty years or so. Flat four, not straight four. Love what you guys are bringing us with the car videos! Its nice to actually learn the history of the car too!
+Craig “ToyotaYoda” Kulig i was hoping that someone would remember that the beetle is no longer the most sold car in the world. also it hasn't been quite 20 years yet only 18.
Craig Kulig That is true, the Beetle is not the most sold car of all time, but it is the most sold car model, since it stayed pretty much the same over its lifetime
i do drive one of those last generation of beetles made in Mexico in 1995 and i for me is the best car ever. and it will be with me for as long as i live, is more than a car, is more than a mean of transportation, is something else, and i am proud to own a Volkswagen beetle. Mostly fond memories of both my high school teenage-years Beetles...had a 1967 beetle that I rolled whilst racing another beetle...then a 1974 Super Beetle tnat I fantasized as a 911...complete with metallic silver paint, simulated Fuchs 5-spoke wheels and a mini ducktail...
Cur8or88, I'm glad you pointed that out. I thought 'wait a minute', but then I just watched a clip on the last VW bus and they were using straight 4 water-cooled engines. In the US, and as far as I know world-wide, they were using flat four technology until 1979 here. I don't know about when/if the Mexico plant went to the in-line 4 engine with water cooling. Interesting video though. I had a 1974 Super Beetle. Funny how then it didn't see that slow....but in retrospect, wow, my TDi is a race-car in comparison. :-) Happy memories.
Like art, true appreciation of this vehicle occurred when production finished. People bought this car mainly because it was cheap and reliable, like the Toyota Corolla of today. It's the history of the vehicle people appreciate. I can guarantee you no one would have a old air cooled beetle as a daily driver to get you from A to B........ The VW golf platform does this perfectly to meet modern standards. Imagine driving a MK1 beetle down the M6 everyday lol

Can't wait for mine to be ready in the summer :D anyone who's reading this that hopes to have one someday, it will happen, you just gotta work for it :)
5:04 LOL! I can't remember the last time I saw anybody pushing a car to a gas station. In fact, I can't remember anybody changing their own flat tire (even if it comes with the car).
The spirit of the Beetle is very much alive. However, its no longer in production. Its alive in the millions of Air Cooled beetles still on the road today that survive with the largest aftermarket of any other production car in history.
That’s not a Beetle...it’s a sad attempt at an bored rebirth....sometimes, you just can’t improve upon perfection, and to ever try, is to welcome failure. I was born in 1968...so we had quite a few Bugs in the family, but my favourite was my older sisters semi-automatic (remember those? Changing 3 gears with no clutch/ so much fun!). She’s 6 years my senior...in the winter, living Toronto, we;d wait until a snow storm, Hope in her Bug, and go snow drifting off the back of the car and she did circle after circle, as the little engine that could, did, and I went flying into many a fence! Lol! But those wonderful, heartwarming memories ONLY belong to that are of Beetle, and that wonderful sound those 2 little mufflers made. I bought the newest beetle last year, and was so disappointed, traded it in for a Porsche, because the new Bug is basically a cheap copy of one, so I figured, why it but the real thing?, and I sadly realized nothing will ever compare to my sisters Bug, which was totalled by her now boyfriend at the time. He got hammered, and thought it wise to see how fast he could get “that Nazi mobile’ (as he called it, and he was born in Germany!) to go on the highway...until he lost control at 130km/h, hit a concrete centre divide on a sharp corner, was ejected through the sunroof (that leaked constantly) 250 metres, landing in a field filled with hay, and walked away without one bloody scratch, but the Bug aka Herbie, was now a flattened chuck of steel! Wish Herbie was the one that hit the hay, and idiot brain the concrete! Dammit I miss that car so much....that was over 30 years ago, and I still love that car, but I just can’t find one in decent shape here in Toronto, and I’m no mechanic, so I’ll drive my little sports car (don’t be impressed, the bank owns it, I just pay a small fortune each month to be allowed to drive it!), but if I find my Herbie, I’d ditch the Porsche in a second, and relive my youth with my sister!
@3:17 the narrator is wrong ; VW did honor the stamp book savers before the war later with eventually getting cars. I remember reading it in A book that quoted A credible source.
Although the spirit of the beetle will never die, it will take a corporation that sees profit as an afterthought to build a true successor to the beetle. To be honest, it might even take a closed capital corporation to do that.
EDIT: This comment is about the New Beetle that is demonstrated from 6:46 of the video. VW China is recalling New Beetle produced between 2012 and 2013. This is the beetle that has a non-independent rear suspension that will snap. The same suspension is fitted to 580,000 examples of Sagitar, Jetta for Chinese market. 40 failures have been recorded on Sagitar, featuring entirely disconnected rear suspension beam off the chassis. Such a death trap.
you ignorant!, the beetle has a non multilink independent rear transaxle suspension ¬¬ if cars in china had failed suspensions it sure is because of the horrible build quality and quality control they have in china
BIOGENA Oh yeah, explain this, sunshine: VW recalls 1.1 million cars in North America, China over suspension issue Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:15am EDT (Reuters) - German automaker Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) said it is recalling more than 1.1 million cars in North America and China to correct a potential problem with rear suspension parts. VW said it had received no reports of accidents or injuries relating to the issue. The company said Friday the recall covers about 442,265 cars in the United States and 126,000 in Canada, including 2011-2013 VW Jettas and 2012-2013 VW Beetles. Earlier Friday, VW announced a similar recall in China of 581,090 locally made Sagitars, a Jetta variant, as well as Beetles, over the same issue. A VW spokesman declined to say how many Jettas and Beetles may have been recalled for similar problems in Europe, Mexico and South America. If the affected cars are involved in a rear or side collision, they may suffer a cracked suspension arm which, if undetected, could lead to a crash, the company said. Dealers will inspect the cars and either replace a broken part or install a metal support to protect the part. VW chose to give Chinese market non-independent suspension to save money, and it bit its arse nice and juicy. And some those suspension that failed did not subject to collision at all.
JackpodyDK Aha, VW China is recalling imported Beetles produced between 24/4/2012 to 14/7/2013, exactly the batch you mentioned. I was talking about the new Beetle in the original post, not the classic ones, in case anyone wonders.
You never specified the model Beetle and yo're on a video about old Beetles. You also said "This is the Beetle" as in that Beetle in the video. You're seriously not making any sense.
I heard "straight 4"...Try "Boxer" or horizontally opposed. This guy, although a great host, has no idea about the mechanics of the old Beetle. He refers to the drum brakes being challenging. I could be wrong, but by 1977 front discs should have been standard. If the brakes (even if they were 4 wheel drum) would only be difficult to deal with, if they were not working properly.
Hello, congrats about the video , very nice! What do you say me about the car VW BRASILIA , its very popular here in brazil but I dont see this car in USA. Do you think this car is ugly? Thanks!
Vw superbeetle was my first car and seeing it now still makes me cringe. As your first car you both love and hate the car at the same time. Eventually it turned to all hate. Now a 1985 Honda Rebel is my daily driver and I love it.
Ronald de Rooij I was trying to spell out how it should be properly spoken in English, sadly I do not know phonetic script, like what is in a dictionary... The presenter butchers the pronunciation ironically right after saying "or in German..".
Damian Yoss Yeah, you are right. The problem is that the English language does not have the long "a" and the "g" that the Germans have. Would Folkswaakn do the trick?
This commentor needs to do some homework , this is a FLAT four, not a "straight" four. A "straight" four would be what I would call an "inline" four, totally different. Also, 0-60 NEVER took 30 seconds, maybe for you, but my 72 Super Beetle had 60 HP, no air, 4 speed manual, it only weighed 2100 lbs or so. It wasn't fast, but it was fun to drive.
VW definitely NEEDS to go BACK to the REAR engine, RWD layout in the New Beetle. If they want to SELL more cars. The powertain is already available from Subaru.
VW should have just kept the old beetle look. They can make modifications with their new lines of other cars but should have left the beetle alone. It seems like thry aint even paying attention to what the consumers are saying lol... 🤨
beetles just cant be replaced by anything ellse, same hapens with other nature maste. pieces .Its sad to see costly, unreliable and complex cars bearing the name.
5:23 WHAT a straight 4 ? Come on
it's not the only mistake-he says the 2CV has a modern version-it doesn't
Also, 0-60 mph was more like 15 - 18 seconds, not 35! My 1970 1200cc was faster than that...
mk win I agree...my beetle was not that slow, and mine had 48 HP not 30...
i see everybody noticet that :D
Boxer flat 4 NOT a straight 4!
The new Beetle is good but will never replace the original. I say VW go back to the original design(rear engine, rear wheel drive)and I'll buy one.
Unless you're in the US, there is the new Renault Twingo, Rear wheel drive and rear engined, but if you're from the US, the Smart Fortwo which will be launched there shares 70% of the parts with the Twingo.
Canada doesn't have this Renault as they are not sold here.
They still do
It's the Porsche 911
Not even close. If I had the cash I'd buy a 911. Please don't compare these two cars!
david dykeman But you can still have the smart Forfour, which is a Renault Twingo badged as a smart.

Still work ed for years just fine air cooled no need for antifreeze
Actually the "new" front engine beetle does have an in line 4.

VW definitely needs to go back to the rear engine, RWD layout in the Beetle. I would have no trouble buying one if that were so.
Then you would get into Porsche amounts of money for a chassis like that. And to be honest, we have 911 to cover the gap the Beetle has left :P
Mzn T No you wouldn't. Where do you get that from? The Renault Twingo is rear engine and it is far from Porsche money.
I exaggerated... a lot :P

The factory in Mexico is in Puebla not "Pueblo" Nice video btw , love the bugs or like we call them in Mexico the "vocho"
@5:20 So the Beetle has a straight-4, huh?
Ya , straight sideways
Its a bugs life love my 68 bug. thats a super beetle.
$6 for gas! Outrageous! ;) Great job guys! Keep it up.

VW recalls 1.1 million cars in North America, China over suspension issue
Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:15am EDT
(Reuters) - German automaker Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) said it is recalling more than 1.1 million cars in North America and China to correct a potential problem with rear suspension parts.

It's a flat four engine not a straight 4 lol whoops
they also made convertibles in the karman factory until 1979
Thanks for using the Metric system
Germany was not defeated, the treaty of Versailles simply blamed and placed responsibility on them
What could that thing _possibly_ have to do with vintage Fender musical instruments? It's about as logical a combo as Rocky and "Shamrock Meats".
Lovely ♥
THEY KILLED THE LITTLE BUG!!!!!!!!!!
For a channel that calls itself Carfection, the information provided was far from perfect.
Exelent video
I heard "straight 4"...Try "Boxer" or horizontally opposed. This guy, although a great host, has no idea about the mechanics of the old Beetle. He refers to the drum brakes being challenging. I could be wrong, but by 1977 front discs should have been standard. If the brakes (even if they were 4 wheel drum) would only be difficult to deal with, if they were not working properly.
6:53-6:59 Does this look similar to a scene from Herbie fully loaded?
Hello, congrats about the video , very nice!
What do you say me about the car VW BRASILIA , its very popular here in brazil but I dont see this car in USA. Do you think this car is ugly? Thanks!
+carfection please make a video review featuring the vw polo
I liked the '66 I had over 50 years ago.
I love my 1967 beetle
1.2 litre straight four engine eh? Funny, I thought it was a flat 4 boxer.
Can someone explain to me why Fender, the guitar company, is written on the fender of the new beetle??
Fender doesn't make car audio equipment so it partnered it Panasonic which does the hardware side and fender did the software part of the system.
Vw superbeetle was my first car and seeing it now still makes me cringe. As your first car you both love and hate the car at the same time. Eventually it turned to all hate. Now a 1985 Honda Rebel is my daily driver and I love it.
Most influential car
It is actually pronounced (folks-vawg-in) not (volts-wag-on)............... Wouldn't have a problem with it if the host didn't say "or in German...."
Well, both are incorrect actually. I would not know how to spell it out. So I canot do better.
Ronald de Rooij I was trying to spell out how it should be properly spoken in English, sadly I do not know phonetic script, like what is in a dictionary... The presenter butchers the pronunciation ironically right after saying "or in German..".
Ronald de Rooij In fact most English speakers do this.. pronounce it as if they are saying the English words volts and wagon.
Damian Yoss Yeah, you are right. The problem is that the English language does not have the long "a" and the "g" that the Germans have. Would Folkswaakn do the trick?
+Ronald de Rooij no it's Volks fagen with a long a
4:21 you hooked me 7:05 you lost me..
"James May's Cars of the People" - anyone?
Is he standing on the set of the 3rd Indiana Jones movie? You know, when they get on the motorcycle?
RIP New Beetle
A straight 4 wtf. Some weird English beetle perhaps
I want a 1967 VW beetle.
hey XCAR ! wheres "Singer Vehicle Design: Porsche 911" video ???
+XCARFilms Could you imagine a Singer VW beetle.
I agree with him about the up! car - too bad we Americans can't buy one!
VW should have just kept the old beetle look. They can make modifications with their new lines of other cars but should have left the beetle alone. It seems like thry aint even paying attention to what the consumers are saying lol... 🤨
The name of the engineer was "Porsche", not "Porsch".
5:20 a "straight four engine" ? Am I really the first one to notice this mistake?!
*_54 dislikes have no hearts_*
Never in the creation of puff did any VW Beetle have a straight 4. Can we take any of this documentary as correct ?
beetles just cant be replaced by anything ellse, same hapens with other nature maste. pieces .Its sad to see costly, unreliable and complex cars bearing the name.
At 5.20 did he say straight four?
What year is this beetle
Porsche was born from the Beetle...seen the documentary
ferdinand porsche first designed the beetle and then he made is own company porsche
If the guy with glasses doesn't talk I turn off lol
The "new beetle " is no BEETLE !
I beg your pardon? a STRAIGHT four engine????
it was not humble beginning, KDF Wagen
Thats not the Type I, that's the Typ 11 !!!
Is that a Porsche steering wheel ?
I have a BMW beetle 2003 convertable
When you said "straight 4 engine", I left the video... Hint: research about the subject you're dealing with!
Straight 4? It's a boxer engine, how could you make this mistake?
STRAIGHT 4?!?! Don't you mean "Boxer" 4 Cyl engine? ¬¬
It's about time they ditched that flower power bullshit. no car needs a vase in it.
bring back the Karmann Ghia!
you mean a 1.4 liter flat four
A straight 4 engine? Not a Boxer?
a 100km a not all models traveled at that speed some at 40 km
It's Puebla, Mexico not "El Pueblo" lol!
