I remember when I bought my 44 mag S&W in 1987, i still have it too. I would fire it every weekend for 3 years while I was stationed at Fort Benning GA when I worked at the Airborne Jump tower as a printing press operator. I lived right down the street from the base range, sweet. I found that I could hold my arms and elbows at an angle to push the recoil up and not towards my body - I felt only 1/4 of the recoil. I still shoot that way today. I'm just saying. I mostly fire my 44 mag one handed with the same idea. The recoil has to be directed to to your side and not center (at you head - bad idea LOL). ❤
Hi Ron, I really enjoy your podcasts! On a recent podcast reviewing the 500 S&W, you asked for feedback from anyone that has scoped one. I have one with an 8 3/8" barrel that I won at a dinner hosting volunteer hunting instructors in Connecticut. My eyes aren't that sharp anymore, so I topped it with a Leupold Vari-X 2.5-8x32mm Extended E.R. scope with Leupold base and rings that replaced the rear site. I shoot the HSM 350gr JHP and Hornady 500gr XTP for target shooting and hunting deer and moose. So far, the Leupold scope, base and rings are holding up fine, but I must admit that I don't put a lot of rounds through it.
... still remember my 44 Mag and the first shots with wooden grips. The woods structure was later imprinted in my hand ;-) different grips made the trick later
If you are using a rifle you might as well use a real rifle cartridge. You run .308 and get similar power, far more velocity and pay less than half for the ammo when compared to 500.
I've dumped quite a few rounds through my 500, the same model shown here. I've always shot jacketed bullets, using the jacketed compensator. When you touch the powder off on that thing, it's not a task, it's an event of Biblical proportions. Loading a shovel-full of H110 behind a 325 grainer, you can see the muzzle flash from outer space. It's simply glorious. I've even two-fisted that caliber with my and my son in-laws pistols, it set me back about 6 inches straight south shooting at Bennett Mountain. The 2 slugs might have moved the mountain north a wee bit upon impact.
Well Ron, I have a TC Contender in a 45/70. I have killed a caribou at 150 yds. Bullet went clean through. When you pull the trigger, you are not sure which end of the gun you are holding. PS: I live in Alaska.
Ron I find your channel to be a wealth of information. I own the 460 Raging Hunter and now I find myself considering the 500. That thing looks like it will throw your vertebrae out of wack.
I have the same revolver, All in all I like the 460 S&W a lot better. Being able to shoot 4 calibers in one makes it very flexible. Not to mention it being the fastest production handgun in the world.
I have the 460 mag with a 10.5-inch barrel, and it's a tac driver. I have no trouble taking northern Michigan whitetail out to (my farthest) 143yrds. Yes, lots of practice and a good rest, and oh ya, a good scope, but the round is very capable.
I have owned my .500 S&W since 2004. I found only one scope and mounts that can stand up to the recoil and power. The Burris Handgun scope. 2-7x32. This scope has internal springs that are designed to handle the massive power of this gun. I sighted in my zero at 100 yards. It’s extremely accurate with 325 grain Hornady Rounds. However, if I shoot at targets much closer, say 50 yards or less, the vertical impact is off significantly.
Hi Ron, as an pistol instructor your form is good. As for shooting left you might try putting a little more of your finger on the trigger. I know if one doesn't have enough finger on the trigger it can deviate the round to either left or right. Anyways love the show and podcast. Thanks
I was watching this video thinking that I really don’t want to try the 500 out. I’ve got smaller hands myself… Then you remembered that I had a friend buy one of these back when they first came out. After firing off one cylinder, I was done. I’ll just stick to my puny little 357.
Get ahold of Scott at Kentucky ballistics, he can point you in the right direction to get 700 grain hard cast . Now Scout is a big ole boy, and he's the reigning king of big bore hard recoiling firearms. He's got a 950 JDJ, as well as a 4 bore rifle. Oh, his punt gun is beast as well. But if you want to acquire big bullets, he's got the hookups.
I own a 6.5 inch semi lug X-frame S&W 500 magnum revolver. It has a ported barrel with an expansion chamber at the end of the barrel. So actually 5.5 inches of rifled barrel.
I doubt one will ever see a worn out 500 S&W. I opted for the 5 5" version, I cant shoot well enough to justify the long barrel that maximizes the round. Even reloading this monster isnt cheap.
Lots of scopes can stand up to the recoil and that gun is drilled and tapped under the rear sight. I said this on your last video, but you need to shoot a F/A in 475 or 500 WE. The big 500 S&W isn't bad after shooting them. It isn't a power things. It's a weight thing (and no comp on them either)
My buddy let me shot 5 shots at 25yds 500 S&W bench rest +-3” group and NO I didn’t want to shoot it any more. Another buddy let me do the same with his 50 Desert Eagle with the same result!
My hand is already hurting. My 4570 with hand loads kicks harder than my 500. Either way I'm gritting my teeth especially out in the cold good grief Ron.
Always thought the 500 was a ridiculously silly handgun and caliber. Like big block Corvettes that end up wrapped around a tree the first time it rains
@Drmcclung Go back to your cats. If you're unaware, a stock on something with a barrel less than 16" is a short barrel rifle. That makes it a class 3 item, and requires a $200 tax stamp. Or 10 years in prison and/or $10,000 fine
Why is it when I go to look at a 500 s&w at the gun shop it looks like a giant bit of f**k-off in my 5'5" hands, but when Ron holds it, it almost looks normal!?
I'm thinking when a bear is charging you, you won't worry too much about sore hands as long as you survive the encounter, but yea it looks a handful of gun alright. Not for the faint of heart. As far as my " manliness" goes I'm OK with a smaller caliber.😅 I would like to try one out for size once though.
The 500 S&W was the most powerful revolver. There are a couple of companies now making revolvers in the 500 Bushwhacker cartridge. It's a 500 S&W on steroids!
The fact that you forgot to put your ears on shows that all your attention was on preparing for that recoil. Hope your ears weren’t ringing too badly after that.
Ron…..I don’t want to be “that guy” pointing out “you’re not wearing eye protection”, or something, etc. However, I own that model in the 10-3/8” barrel. I get it. It’s cold outside, and it’s a heavy handgun, but I’m cringing every time you hold that gun around the cylinder while cocking the hammer. If you had a mishap and your thumb slipped, your left hand would get mangled. The blast coming out around that cylinder is no joke! To anyone who wants to disagree with me….you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about! Lastly, if that gun comes for sale, pass on it as there is something wrong with it. Nice to see some handgun stuff. Now review a T/C Contender in something like 7-30 Waters. 😊
600 nitro would technically be the most powerful revolver, but good luck finding one. 500 bushwacker is also more powerful, but I dont think it has sammi specs yet.
Nice Ron. Throw one of those 3x Primary arms micro optics on there.. very clear, very small and rugged... Take care of your body brother. The pistol doesn't care😂
Time stamp? He covered the 500grain bullets but he clearly stated thats not what he shot and then covered the 440 and said clearly that is what he shot.
Remove the rear sight and the mounting holes for the rail are revealed, as far as picking a scope its no different then picking one for a hard kicking rifle, get one from a reputable brand instead of the bargain bin at Walmart and you will be fine.
I have a Leupold VX3 2.5x8 on mine. It cost me over $100 to sight it in. It has stayed zero’s for over 20 years of very little use. Not much fun to shoot.
Hey Ron, big E from Florida. What do you think about buying a small caliber pistol as a “training tool” to just get more proficient if you will. Does it really make any sense? I’ve been looking at getting a kel tec p17 (22lr) it’s a super light weight pistol with 16+1 capacity. They’re pretty cheap and I’ve seen some good things on them. (Edit that .500 looks like a real palm smacker) 😂😂
@jaydunbar7538 OK, but there's a pistol that's chambered for the 700 nitro express! My point was, isn't that going to be the more powerful of the two? Or did I miss something and the video was about the round and not the s&w 500 magnum 🙃
"The most powerful handgun in the world". Hmmm, that's debatable. The .460 S&W Magnum has a 250 yard point blank range (PBR). The .500 S&W Magnum can take game at a range of over 200 yards. But that's my opinion.

I telling on you to Jerry Miculek for slappin' the cylinder. 😆
@tonyb8791 ROTFLMAO.. now you mention it , getting Ron and Jerry together for a show shooting hunting pistols would be a great show.
I noticed that, too. Shame on you, Ron!
Hot 44mag can get uncomfortable. 454 is miserable for more than a few shots.... the 460 or 500 is just ridiculous. I'd have to pass.
Now lets do the same vid with a Big Horn Armory lever rifle.
Yup. A lever is where this and the 460 shine. I wish there was a cheaper option than the bighorn.
... still remember my 44 Mag and the first shots with wooden grips. The woods structure was later imprinted in my hand ;-) different grips made the trick later
Both the 44 mag and the 500 S&W really show there stuff from a rifle :) thats the best part IMHO about those cartridges.
If you are using a rifle you might as well use a real rifle cartridge. You run .308 and get similar power, far more velocity and pay less than half for the ammo when compared to 500.

Yes you can scope them. some models have a pic rail on them to mount a scope.
Thanks!

Love the 500 Smith cartridge
Wholly crap Ron, that’s a whopper😂😂😂 better you than me
500 Bushwhacker. Look it up.
Good video and great information.
Good watch Ron, we are not really allowed handguns in NZ except if part of a club and only ever used at the range.

I used to shoot my super blackhawk one handed really well. Now, arthritis has made it to where i cant two handed. Gonna miss her.
Ron got an early xmas present
Ron I have a tc encore in 500 s&w mag. You need to try out.
Was expecting 500 Maximum but is still cool! I'd only shoot this with a pistol brace so it doesn't fly out of my hand when shooting it.
RUT OH DIRTY RON 2 ...😊
My buddy let me shot 5 shots at 25yds 500 S&W bench rest +-3” group and NO I didn’t want to shoot it any more. Another buddy let me do the same with his 50 Desert Eagle with the same result!
Remove the rear sight and it is tapped underneath . When you heal up, try freedom Arms in 50 Wyoming Express
You'd better put a risk brace on for that thing
I think accuracy is you Ron I got the same one your using
My hand is already hurting. My 4570 with hand loads kicks harder than my 500. Either way I'm gritting my teeth especially out in the cold good grief Ron.
Holy smoke that's one big shot
Is your wrist hurting yet

I bought a 460 s&w about 5 years ago and the is an alsome pistol I bought it cause I can shoot 3 different caliber rounds in it
Got a Leopold 6x on my bfr 500
Those things hurt
4570 in the revolver is more powerful.
That thing has to have something going on with it for multiple people to have issues hitting a target at 50 yds.
What about shooting the same ammo in a 24 inch rifle? Would it be capable of bringing down a cape buffalo?
Just imagine what you would get if you shot good ammo like buffalo bore at 1650fps
Since a bear can run like 30 mph a second 500 magnum shot doesn't seem possible. I think id choose the 44 or the 41 mag.

The 700 nitro is a rifle cartridge, jamming it into a pistol does not change the design parameters of the cartridge.
