- Marabou jigs are a great way to catch pressured trout. While they see a gillion tiny flies on 6x, they are rarely presented with anything 2.5" long, scooting along the bottom with a tempting breathing action even while sitting still on a sand or rock bottom. The ability to land even large fish quickly without overly exhausting them and a single barbless hook make it a great alternative for spinning gear fans, and it works everywhere we go, including here on the Frying Pan River, in Colorado. I fish the 1/8oz jig on a 6'9" ML power, XF action St Croix Avid for accuracy and sensitivity, Abu Garcia Revo X, Berkley NanoFil 6# for castibility and feel, and a 12" Trilene 100% Fluoro 6# leader for transparency and abrasion resistance. Gently tickling the bottom is the key to generating bites...finesse is the operative term.
Awesome tailwater bow! I've been planning to tie up some jigs and give it a go with a bobber like they do for steelhead up north. Your method of tickling the bottom looks like a winner too! I'll be trying both methods this year.
Always cast upstream bring bait lure jig down stream fish look for easy meals.
wow what a fish
What rod was this on? Love Troys stuff.
Chad Lachance uses
St. Croix rods exclusively, mainly Trout Series.
UL or L what length??
Do you tie these yourself?
Actually a buddy ties them for me.
Just curious, being a fly fisherman I think this would be a fun alternative for spin fishing!
That is exactly the idea, Dalton. We caught several fish on fly tackle and tiny nymphs that morning, and then switched to the spinning gear and a marabou jig simply for a change of pace. Also, spinning gear is a great way to overcome windy days or high, muddy water.
Dude! Fish! Big! Fish! Dude!
