  • Olympiakos survived OAKA hell & won against Panathinaikos for the 18th time in the last 19 tries. But what exactly allowed the Reds to come away with a victory? In this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas analyzes the Greek Derby: the new Vezenkov in Alec Peters, the huge importance of Nikola Milutinov in this game & the performance by Kostas Sloukas.

At the last play he had Juancho ready to shoot it, but instead went for a floater (if you can even call it that) from the 3 point line with Canaan all over him 😂 Panathinaikos will regret paying so much for a player that puts himself first over the team.

He is a player that is clutch and can take important shots when needed and he can also play defense, while Sloukas cannot. Honestly Sloukas leaving was a blessing in disguise. Panathinaikos overpaid for Sloukas and simply lacks the personnel to play good perimeter defense. Vildoza cannot play alongside Sloukas because of that and Grant is their only really good defender. That will be an issue all season long. Yesterday Olympiacos scored 15/32 3p shots and if Larentzakis and Papanikolaou weren’t frustrating to watch, it would be a much easier win. Nice vid!
    Pao at this stage looked scary. It's not a "team" yet, but there's great prospect, especially with Mitoglou to replace Lesort / Huancho. There is a definite gap there and both Papapetrou and Mitloglou can help, though still Pao does not have a secondary center of high caliber.
    Vildoza does not impress, but Grigonis does so. It's not just his difficult shots, but the timing showed mental fortitude.
    In terms of defence? Well, that remains to be seen, the prospects are not great there. I have to stress here that Euroleague is brutal and if you have weaknesses they will be exploited.
    Olympiakos on the other side, looks even more scary. I will dare say that Miloutinov & Fall combo is one of the best in the league. Yes, Tavarez is probably better than either of them, but together they look so solid and strong.
    I see that Olympiakos has picked a great deal of players that showed prospect in the shadow of better ones, or while playing on lesser teams:
    * Walkup is top-class and notice how he shot without any hesitation - the same player that teams gave 1 meter gap to shoot last year and he didnt dare!!! He is just getting better and better!
    * Goss can play the 2nd guy, but he can adapt to being the first or close. He didn't look scared taking big shots and so far he has delivered on all the preseason and initial games.
    * Peters wow! Losing the Euroleague MVP only to have his backup who played little last year be the MVP of the round! Impressive work on his body, he used to be weak defensively! As people say, if you want to become a great player and earn money, go play for Bartzokas at the '4' position!!
    * Sikma looks totally out of place for this team. It's early I know, but this looks like a terrible risk! He is too slow and i can't fathom what he can offer to the team that we couldn't have found on a more versatile player who can help on the center position more.. Olympiakos does not really need his passing..His slow feet got effortlessly exploited on the very first game. Not sure how this move can be salvaged.
    * Fun fact about last offence, the question we all had, Canan was screaming for a pass, Walkup rose to the challenge and i'm sure Goss could have taken that too. At least people want to take responsibility. Now can they actually score? We'll see..

    Sloukas is a good player but basketball is a team-sport. With his play he actually proved and showed why coach B was right and he was not using him more than 20-25 min.
    Big players dont realise that after 31-32 no matter how much training you do, you lose weight ... noone can beat time! Thats why he was so prone to mistake, from tiredness he kept losing balls and did so crucial turnovers that cost his team the loss. Pana played slightly better than my team, had more choices (Fall was not playing, so Milu was the only center) but Sloukas cost them their loss
    For the sake of Greek basketball I hope we see more games like these, without idiot fans spoiling the fun and the joy. It is a game and not a war, for gods sake!

    It's crazy how people base their whole opinions on one or two moments. Because if PAO didn't make simple mistakes in the end they would have won. And now because of one or two moments Olympiacos is unbeatable now. I should stop reading these dumb comments, not good for my brain. 😅

      what 2 moments? We beat you easy in neutral ground 24 points difference and we beat you with 2 starters missing (Fall , Brasdeikis) in your home court. 20.000 statues at the end. Oly better in all stats

  • @critter0
    @critter0 9 месяцев назад +2

    Ataman's style of play doesn't fit Greek teams who are used to play more defensively. I don't know if he is going to succeed but every other coach like him Kazlauskas, Pini Gershon failed at that style of Basketball. Coach Bartzokas needs players of that type and I was very puzzled when the name Mike James came up. he had one prima donna in the team, Sloukas, which he had trouble managing. Bartzokas needs soldiers not stars.

    • @wonderlandian8465

      What you are saying makes no sense. The roster Ataman build is specifically made for his style of basketball, this isn't the national team.

  • @georgiosladas3106

    Ataman véry slow in his responses. Mpartzokas is very smart. At o.t he could put kalaitzakis high pressure on Yuokap to destroy his creation. He could put the fresh Antetokoumbo on Miludinov. Oly played such hard defense and pao does not score. He had to respond with high defense he did not.

  • @ruriram

    Sloukas playing too much on his own. Very similar to what Vildoza did when he was on the court. Both of them had to share ball a little bit more, especialy with Grigonis shooting well in the game

    We shouldn't forget that Panathinaikos lost the victory in the last shot. So easily the result could be different. Then what would we say about the players and who made a great performence or not? I believe Panathinaikos made a big game, but Olimbiakos wan the game in the end, because of his bigger experience and better shooting in the overtime.

  • @DioTkS
    @DioTkS 9 месяцев назад +1

    It's too soon for any conclusions, Panathinaikos is a one-month team, they haven't been trained on more than 8 times all together, even though has showed the potential of this team, forcing Olympiakos to extra time, with all the respect to Olympiakos on how good team is. PAO needs to improve the perimeter defense as they don't have strong bodies to make it easy and learn how to break the screens. On the offense, they have to learn how to play pick and roll the guard with the center, I counted at least 3 times sloukas and lessort failed to communicate therefore the turn-overs, also the spacing and ball movement are a problem. All these problems are problems of a new team. I hope at the end all the athletes will remain strong and healthy for a nice competitive season.
    P.S. I am a PAO fan

    Just few days before in the greek super cup final, Olympiacos destroyed pao with 24 points on the head.
    There's no sloukas revenge or anything. Too much hype for a role player. Goss or Walkup are ten times the player sloucash is.
    W/o Moustapha Fall, without Mckissick essentially and with 90-10 help from the refs.
    I don't even count Brazdeikis as an absence.
    18-1 wins against pao in the last 19 games.

    All I am seeing is that Pao is at top level so early already. If they find chemistry by March, then watch out. Time is on their side more than most of their opponents. Imo Mitoglou was a bigger miss for Pao, than Fall for Olympiacos.

    • @wonderlandian8465
      @wonderlandian8465 9 месяцев назад +24

      lol imagine saying Mitoglou was more important than Fall. Olympiakos was playing with literally 1 center the whole match. If Oly had Fall it would have been another 20+ point blow out again, because the one quarter PAO build a difference , the 2nd one, Oly was playing with Sikma at the 5. Imagine if it was Fall. 20 point difference again

      Fall was THE most influential payer of any team in the EL over the past 2 seasons. Meanwhile, Mitoglou was shooting junk. Papapetrou & Brazdeikis were big losses for their teams, but PAO should have won a game where Pap had one of the worst games of his career, Larry & McKissic lost their minds after some calls they didn't like and Olympiacos ended up with just 5 guys they could trust. Both sides will propably improve massively over the next few weeks
