I don't understand some wood craftsmen. Glue is supposed to go on both stationary piece and jointer piece before they're assembled in the same way you put Anti-Seize on both nut and bolt, or PVC glue on both pipe and joint. This is why; -depending on which piece of wood you apply the glue, as the jointer piece slides in, the glue is either being pushed or wiped away. And by the time the jointer is fully seated, half of its glue is gone. However, if you put glue on both pieces, as you are sliding in the jointer piece, it's being met by fresh glue from both front and back of the joint. Sure, there will be more push out, but you can save that in a small plastic bag and force the air out. You can easily prove this by taking an extra-long joint piece of jointer material and put glue on it and tap it in. Then immediately from the side, put a clamp on it and tap the clamp out. Look at the glue coverage. It will be 50% dry on the joint piece. I was taught this by a craftsman long ago and tested this out myself to prove it to myself....
All I did for a summer job was to assemble drawer boxes. It was a no brainer job. It was all set up with jigs. But we used walnut dowels on 1/2" white oak veneer cabinet plywood boxes. and had a dowel every inch. It looked nice. Plus it's stronger than splines

@@balla2828 To expand on the explanation: if you just cut miter joints and glue them together, the joint is mostly end grain to end grain, which is very weak because none of the wood fibers extend through the joint.
By cutting slots and adding splines or wafers, you’re gluing long grain to long grain-a much stronger glue joint, plus you have the mechanical strength of the spline across the miter joint.

So this is perfect!! I was wondering if I'd have to use plywood of some type but now I can stick with hardwood and add those wafer joints.
