I'd probably try to use quarter inch or five sixteenth machine nuts and bolts instead of the rivets, which don't seem sturdy enough for that application. On the end grain, install a flat metal bracket for the bolt to pass through to prevent wear and potential split out. 🤔
There's literally no force on anything here, this'll work just fine. I wouldn't have done it like this, but it'll work for a long time. Sure, if you run into it it'll break loose, but those boards would probably snap anyway.
Yeah, it’s obviously flimsy from the video and is definitely more so in person. The brackets are a great idea for not having to ever rip the whole thing out or replace a board when the one of those pine boards cracks or breaks from something bumping it or kids or something.
The end result looks very nice, and the rivets are certainly a cheap. on the fly, option. But if I were spending the money on nice wood, I would have would have upgraded to some small steel dowel pins and plastic washers for the base to ride/float on. Otherwise, nicely done mister!

Rivets are very durable and would definitely out last wooden pegs. I'm no carpenter by far but I can customize vehicles. I manually popped 250 rivets in a L88 Corvette hood scoop once; trust me. The inventor didn't have me in mind 😅

This should work on this guy's end, over time the wood will dry out and run the risk of splintering in that spot. That or the holes will expand over time for rubbing on that rivet. Just to be clear for everyone else as well, those rivets the installer used looked aluminum.

Wood drying out causing splintering? What? What does it matter if the rivet is aluminium? Are you worried about galvanic corrosion between the steel pin? Look up commercial window shutters, they use plastic pins that aren't that much thicker than that steel pin.

Nice work, the wood looks like it set you back a fair old bit, tropical hardwood is not cheap anymore, if I was to build that I think I’d of maybe upgraded the rivets to stainless steel dowels , that wood if brought in the U.K. would set you back about £250 -£300 . Wood is just so damn expensive these days . Nice build well thought out something so simple that has practical use.
How did you jam it up to the ceiling . . . my limited knowledge of geometry says that you can't. Because the hypotenuse is longer than the height of the triangle.
