They scrapped 5 and focused on 4. It all makes sense now. This does feel like two epic action films in one. They probably scrapped most of the dialogue for 5, and just made it an hour long action sequence in France. The last hour of this film is almost 60 minutes of nonstop action. Great film. One of the best martial arts action films ever produced from Hollywood. Incredible stuff.
So that's why JW4 has a long run time. It's basically the conclusion
Yeah, it very much felt like two movies that had to be made into one.
JW5 is confirmed. Stop running with this nonsense lie
This was a fantastic film. Props to the John Wick series for the consistent quality across four movies
its great how this film clearly shows that keanu still has it at nearly 60 years of age, and still the new matrix movie happened for whatever reason.
warner brothers is desperate
Really happy to see that Scott Adkins has finally been given a chance to shine!
I really hope studios paid attention. He showed a shit ton of range and obviously his physical prowess speaks for itself.
One of reasons i cant wait to see the movie, love Scott.
No less than he deserves
He was a lot of fun in that scene. Hell he ****ing STOLE the scene.
While I love Donnie Yen, I thought his character was almost cliche and gary stuish. Scott Adkins stole every scene he was in................. and then started doing Taekwondo in a fat suit. The man is a star.
I didn't feel the runtime. This movie was action packed and felt like it. A lot of movies have a ton of action, but it typically feels stale and slow paced. This movie was nuts. I'm taking my daughter to see it again this weekend, she's a huge John Wick fan! That nunchuck scene was epic.
As an aside, I really hope we get one more with Keanue Reeves as Wick, I don't like the last bit of this movie, although it is a fitting end if they choose to leave it there.
I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this film! Just came back from watching it a few hours ago. Also congrats on your editor role! So proud of you man
Also thank you for shouting out Scott Adkins!! I wish he was a more well-known actor as I think he deserves to be
The movie blew me away. Took me back to my childhood: Bruce Lee, sho kusugi, Chuck Norris. An action movie that doesn't pretend it's anything else.
Saw it last night…..
This is going to be a hard action film to beat this year.
This was possibly the best of the sequels.
Glad to hear of its quality. I'll probably check it out. With Part 3 I did feel things were getting a little long in the tooth (and absurdly over the top) and so I sort of hope this is a "finally". Hate to see good things getting milked to hell and back for all eternity so I'd prefer to see a series like this end on a high note.
The over-the-top stuff is what makes it even better though
The action, design, lighting, choreography are all out of this world! The dragon breath shotgun is insane as well as osaka continental and stairs in paris are retartedly good!
You know, age has little to do with physical fitness. If one is healthy and pretty active then it’s not really a surprise
JOHN WICK:Chapter 4 is not just the BEST installment ever of the John Wick franchise, but one of the GREATEST action movies ever made in the genre's history! A WORK OF ART 🙂
06:28 Your brief Keanu Reeves impersonation was spot on hahaha!!
I enjoyed it a lot. The Hotline Miami homage sequence was incredible. My biggest issue is that this movie has the weakest dialogue of the whole series. That said, it more than makes up for it with THE best action.
Not every top down view with guns is Hotline Miami you know. There are hundreds of games that came before it in the 80s and 90s.
Really sick of hearing about Hotline Miami as if it's the only thing in the world to ever do this.
This isnt even the first film to do this!
@@dannypatrick9361 oh I know. I played a ton of them back in the day, Ikari Warriors, Commando, Smash TV, Robotron, etc. That said, this was definitely closer to modern retro throwbacks like Hotline Miami, Neon
Chrome, or Jydge than any of the 80s or 90s overhead shooters… what with the way it was shot, frame, tight corridors, lighting, tactical gunplay, the crazy environmental realism & damage, and the music and such. Though one COULD make the argument for Loaded.
I have absolutely adored the John Wick series since I saw the first opening weekend in the cinema. I think you could easily cut 20mins from 4. Snip the last 1/4 off most of the fights to tighten them up and reduce the whole Berlin middle to a third.
The more you trim that fat the better.
I think the fights towards the end were the strongest (barring Osaka) and by cutting other parts they really could have leaned into the great Warriors tribute with weirder factions and amping the tension as the clock ticks down
Just came back from it. Had a terrible experience (one of the worst cinema outings) Some random kid ran in and screamed what happens at the end. Another got up and said "This is crap blah blah." And 3/4 of the way in (closer to half) some POS started using a laser pointer on the screen at random non stop till the end just to piss people off. I honestly don't know if I ever wanna go see a movie at the cinema ever again. At least, not so close to its premiere.
I honestly don't know if this is any good now or I just have a tainted view of it. However I do feel part 3 could have been cut down and half of this (or a bit less) was cut out and placed in that one to make this a trilogy and ended it there.
That Last Kumite announcement made my night!
Seeing the into of the film you're working on reminded me that you are yet to review JCVD's classic - Legionnaire (1998)
It's the perfect fit to promote the upcoming movie 👌
Excellent, fair, review…as always.
I have already seen the film but I was still taken off guard by the spoiler filled recap before making any mention of a _review_ .
I don’t think it’s the best movie action ever but it certainly had the best action of any movie ever lol.
Nice review Oliver. My wife and I watched this on our big screen at home last week on our day off. We loved it. Great cinematography and score, also some of the great John Wick action scenes. I was doing my own head in about who the German fat man was until I realised it was modern action legend Scott Atkins. We had a great time with this movie and yes, we did pause to go to the toilet and grab a beer or two :)
Oooo looking forward to The Last Kumite!
scott adkins should be in that if not jcvd
Thanks for the spoilers..i know your used to present the general outline of retro movies but common...
Congratulations Oliver Harper on your new editing gig!
Let John Wick RIP now 🙏 and no more sequels. I am so exhausted and tired after this one. The first one was best followed by the 2nd.
This last one is better than 3 but it is exhausting. I don't want to hear Keanu talking about his dead wife like she is the last angel on earth. And I don't want to see John Wick fighting in space or with zombies next. Please end it here for everyone's sanity.
The 4th one is just so tiring and no emotional appeal or much of a plot. Everyone shoots like it's raining bullets hiding under business suit. It's just too ridiculous. And there is no logic at all anymore. He constantly gets hit by cars and falls out of buildings and he just gets up and fights like it was merely an inconvenience.
And the endless bad guys who keep getting killed over and over in the same way over and over and each bad guy waits their turn to be beaten or bitch slapped. It's like WrestleMania.
I thank Keanu and love the guy. He's great actor. But I simply cannot believe it anymore when I see him punch guys twice his size and they act dazed while they punch and beat him and he treats each like a pat on the back. Come on... Am I the only one seeing this? It's like fake wrestling.
It had a good run and let's move on.
So this movie was delayed 2 years? It already felt like we got to a 4th movie fast but that would have been even quicker
4:50, haha I had no idea it was Scott!
The problem isn't how long it is but whats in it if there is anything wrong.
John wick -best
John wick 2- Straight hell fire

I enjoyed it (Donnie Yen's blind Caine is brilliant) but I agree with criticisms about the exhausting runtime. Remember when John Wick was and 1 and 45 min? Those were the days.
I absolutely LOVED THIS and I defined going to watch it again, I love it so much.
Congratulations on being able to edit that movie🎉
Where do I skip to to avoid all the spoilers because jesus christ.
Oliver a superb review as usual. I went to see the movie today and is spectacular
I've heard this one pushes John into superhero status, lol, that no matter what damage he takes he keeps on going. We saw that start with the second movie, it was ramped up more in the 3rd and now we have this one. I personally still hold the 1st as the best of the lot. It was shorter, tighter, more real to life and worked on all levels, but as with anything in Hollywood if something makes money the studios push for more and more till they have squeezed the last dime from it before chucking it away.
Think of him as Batman lol
@@ViolentCabbage-ym7ko Well, he does have that deep voice, lol :D
Keanu was perfect for Spike Spiegel years ago. At least now he got that cowboy bepop death.
Just came back from seeing this in IMAX - my first time seeing a film in the format and my oh my I’m SO glad it was JW4. It’s a visual treat.
Scott Adkins is always good value. I didn't recognise him! I saw it last night while exhausted and didn't feel the length as it were. The Marquis de Graumont was great, although at the end I kept being reminded of Owen Jones for some reason.
I really appreciate you mentioning the photography and cinematography. I think this is the best looking film in the series by far.
Watched it last night. Planning to watch it again this weekend and also on Monday (this latter with my son).
I just watched this last night, it didn't feel long to me- though some of the fight scenes reminded me of endless gauntlets in video games where the bad guys just keep rushing in- wave after wave -
it was a blast! Fire Shotgun Blast!
Was hoping to see Halle Berry back ( ? maybe she is ? ). After seeing the videos of her training for pt. 3 I was disappointed she only had a few scenes in the film. For pt. 4, for me, the high bar to hurdle was the knife fight from the beginning of 3, will it deliver?
Will there be a part 5?
"Bloated run time"? The Tracker was essential for the movie! The length is just fine. For one thing, they were greenlit to make 2 movies (chapter 4 & 5 back-to-back); but decided on just concentrating on this movie alone. So, they had enough material for 2 whole movies and instead made it into one. And make it the best they could.
Were the "The Lord of the Rings" movies too long as well? Movies are as long as they need to be to tell their story/show the vision of their creators. It is an easy cop out to complain about run time.
I did not feel the length. I was quite capable to "nip off to the toilet" as well. Just gives me a chance to go see it again!
Funny how well this is doing, despite the "bloated run time" while shorter run-time movies are still failing. It is not the run time, it is hte quality of the ENTERTAINMENT. This is a very entertaining movie, period. Therefore, the run time means nothing for viewers.
The movie also has amazing cinematography and the colour timing is amazing!
I fell asleep for maybe 10minutes in the cinema, at one point without any pause it was a bit too long. For me it lacked consistency and plot in the storyline. I wished we discovered something deeper about JW and the characters.
I really liked it, it was a bit long, but totally dragged you into it's universe. Me and the missus couldn't help but laugh at some of the outrageous fight scenes!
I do hope this is the end for John Wick though, it was a nice way to round up the series and I don't think any of the characters really warrant a spin off.
It just got too silly with the whole world after him.
I can't wait to see this! It's already at over 200 reviews with 96% positive aggravated at Rottentomatoes and a 78 weighted Metacritic score as of writing this which is an incredible critical reception. To think the original cut was said to be closer to 4 hours.
Love your reviews. Just right 👍🏽
The runtime was fine! Movies used to be 5 hours long. The movie was as long as it needed to be!
Great review. This is a perfect way to go out but if this one makes big money, I’m sure we will get a Chapter 5. The first movie is still my favourite, then this.
I actually didn't like it surprisingly. You feel it's run time. John Wick has like 6 lines basically. They recycled the dog attacks from the 3rd one. John actually got that Japanese woman father killed by High table by doing what he already knew (if you help Wick we will shut down your place). Wick has to do side quest like a video game to get in back with Belarusians (sigh) . Adkins looks like a Dick Tracy villian from the 90's movie. Everyone dancing around while men are killing each other like a video game backdrop? Donnie Yen was great , Skarssgard was okay but movie is not as well done as other three.
Can't wait for Ballerina. Ana stole the show in No Time to Die.
Scott adkins was awesome he should play MCU kingpin character
Hopefully it's better than part 3 because for me personally that film was a bore to sit through. Part 1 was great because, aside from nicely choreographed action scenes, there was an actual story that one could follow with dialogues between the various people involved. Part 2 was already more leaning towards the action and part 3 was utterly unbalanced where there were so many action scenes it actually became boring to watch.
As bad as trailers are with spoilers this review really takes the cake
This is the most perfect john Wick Movie, and Keanu Reeves Magnum Opus in the Action film Genre.
The actions scenes are the greatest in the entire franchise and eclipse nearly everything we've seen Keanu do in the Matrix Movies.
Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada's Duel was the most emotional moment in the film for me and I cant wait to see what Chad Stalhelski does with the Ghost of Tsushima movie.
My favorite character in this film was Mr. NOBODY due to how he compared to Caine and John wick on a thematic Level in this world of assassins.
This was the most Beautiful film in the series with the music, the Score, and the way they blend this opulent sense of Grand Beauty and color into each film.
wait what, these movies have a writer?
It was phenomenal. I'm not sure if it beats chapter 2 (my fave) but it's close and when I watch it again it may well win out. Superb movie.
I disagree with Oiver:
*The running time was fin for me. I paid for a good time, and that was what I got.
I wouldn't want a film cut for ruling time if it would hurt the pacing or story.
Maybe the director will come out with a shorter cut for those who prefer that.
*Mr. Nobody was interesting. I gathered he wasn't a seasoned assassin, at least compared to others, based on how he was dressed and how he was hesitant to kill save for those who were bad.
personally for me it was dragging out fights that went too long that effected the pacing the most, cut them down.
You don't need to see the same action repeated 20 times in 1 fight only for the next fight for it to have 20 more of another action.
The Osaka fight and car ones were the most guilty of this. Good fights tell a story in themselves and shouldn't be a slog.
If they feel long the overall movie will start to drag. Just my view
@@studioseppuku9454
I hear you.
Two nitpicks I had, w/o going into spoilers, are:
*John Wick falling down stairs to make a certain sunset appointment, which felt forced to me. Yeah, he was tired, but anyone could have stopped his or herself from falling down _that_ many stairs.
*Akira's revenge is left open.
The last kumite, if it doesn't have Bolo or JCVD, Jackie Chan or Dolph ? Then its not a true homeage.
it's 3 hours of action, but honestly the whole time it feels exciting. fantastic film. the scene with John Wick fighting the fat guy will always remain etched in my mind. honestly it's an outstanding film.
I don't care if this movie is 3 Hour long .i love every second of this movie and i gonna watch it again ❤
Never forget me wen u become a household name plis..... congratulations n I'm sure it's gonna b a nostalgic one, I'm pretty excited for "the Last Kumite"
Watched in 4dx last night - very enjoyable
It was good! A bit exhausting & and sum of the action scenes do kinda get drawn out, & overstay it's welcome.
They should do wick 5. I didt knew you can kill a person with a deck of cards
that poor 'Cuda
Accurate review.
I've seen the new John Wick 4 movie....and t didn't surprise me - dunn if that's a good thing or not. watching John Wick film now you will get EXACTLY what you expect- it did look stunning, set in Europe but with the movie being so long I was hoping for an epic last act as the film...but It was half way (this movie is LONG and FEELS it) maybe 30mins too long
..at 10 mins in I could swear I was watching the end of Parabellum (John Wick 3) they were in the same mirrored place where Jet Li died ...oh and Wick took off his belt (again!)
Well no4 should have been titled "longer faster longer"
#JohnWick4
#JohnWick5 "The Quest For More Money"
Went yesterday I’m considering going back
Likewise
With this film John Wick becomes the greatest action film series of all time. Not one movie in the franchise that is short of amazing.
You might be right
Everyone waited years to see John wick get his revenge on the adjudicator and she's not even in it?
Hear Hear Re Adkins..
I wasn't fond of the sequels, expanding the continental and explaining the mystery of the whole assassin organisation ruined it for me in the second movie and I was so bored watching the third one that I can't even remember more than half of the movie. I will eventually watch the fourth one, by I don't have high hopes especially because of its run time.
For me the first one was perfect, it felt "real", and the Continental felt more interesting because they didn't need to explain it, you could use your imagination and not delve too much on it. Also the small scale of the story was more fitting somehow, the suspension of disbelief was much higher, while in the second and third there is so much murder and shooting in the streets and everyone is fine with it, it's like the whole world is just one big assassination planet where it is normal to see people murdering each other.
Finally another person who get its it. Part one was amazing, the sequels were blah. What also killed it for me was that fact that JW went from being revered and respected to every punk thinking they’re better than him. I think they killed his character in the sequels. It’s a good thing part one has a good ending so the sequels can be forgotten.
@@UnapologeticIslam Yes, I forgot to mention what you just said but in the first movie he was Baba Jaga, this legend, the best among the best where even the villain was afraid and knew that it was probably futile to fight him. And the rules were clear do not kill in Continental and gold coins gave you access to unique benefits. There were no High Table and other ridiculous rules and people that contradict each other whenever it's convenient for the plot.
Wow.. Greatest action movie ever
Put a SPOILER TAG...
HORRIBLE START TO THE VIDEO
What spoilers? There is a lot I didn't reveal. A summary of the plot is not a spoiler.
@@OliverHarper That was a crap summary, please remove the non spoiler tag in the description. I wouldnt have watched the video if I that wasnt there.
@@MegaBizMan I still have no idea what you're on about.
I guess the fact that John goes back to Marocco to kill the elder. I also didn't know that beforehand.
No worries, mate. Still love your videos!
I hope this is the last one.
Classic movie
Chapter 3 was 5/8 mins too long, so I can see this being the same and for the same reasons. It's a passion project, and the budget was higher. It's hard to reduce something you hold dear, and when you have the extra money, it's hard to restrict yourself when the inner you just wants to spend every penny so you can put all your ideas on screen.
The easy way to fix this (if they do 5) is to drop the budget a bit as 3 was $75 and 4 was $100.
Totally convoluted plot. As you summarize it, it makes NO SENSE.
ana de armos??? 🤣
The movie was good but plotholes galore and pointlessly long.
👌👌👌🎥
Chapter 5 ? But John wick died
You should probably stop spoiling movies that are still in cinema without a warning.
That’s literally the start of the movie. XD
@@Kenshiro3rd Technically you are correct, it's 2/3 of the movie from the start.
@@adilator the part with the elder? No, it’s pretty much 5 min in.
@@Kenshiro3rd you commenting on a video you didn't even watch? he spoiled the whole movie except for the last act.
There is absolutely no reason for an action movie to be 3 hours.
Худшая часть из четырех. Дурацкий сюжет, повторяющийся экшен, ужасная актерская игра Киану Ривза.
Are we watching the same film? The movie was terrible.
The quality dipped sharply after the first, which is still a classic short but sweet revenge film. Getting revenge due to animals violence is a stroke of genius, but I just wasn't invested in the others which just dragged on.
There is no damn reason a film should be 3 hours long these days when people have less attention span, more options, & are not as interested in films as they are gaming. Greyhound wasn't even 90 minutes long. I want to see more flicks that use their timing more sagaciously.
These movies are getting too long, if you cannot tell a story this thin in two hours you are adding bloat to compensate for the script.
It's too long, I'll wait for VOD
Too long movie feels like video game fights
I'm getting really tired of how overrated these movies are. I get it that R-rated babies from the 80's just can't let go of the shlock they were "raised" on. But stop calling this a 10/10 like its on par with Die Hard or something. The plot of every John Wick movie is literally calling in a handful of convoluted favors to save his ass. That's it, every time. Oh, but this time on horseback!
Whoa, watch that edge, man. Don't want to cut yourself!
Yeah I think action genre of 80's was different, no CGI to rely on, no small minorities who will be offended by the jokes in the movie, cold war influencing most of the bad guys. Those era's standards and rating must be held different than of 2000's ,2010's and of course 2020's.
i saw the first john wick...i thought the story was paperthin and the movie was boring...so i skipped the sequels
Sounds like John's getting on your Wick my man 😂 I agree 👍
@@Ionisus lol why the hell are you here then..... john wick 1 was boring? lol..... do you fall asleep on rollercoasters too...... and you skipped the sequels...... jesus maybe action films arent your bag??? maybe the next MCU thing?
Boycotting this movie because it premiered in russia.
Cry more.
Lets goooo
The fat guy in a purple suit is a gratuitous ripoff of SPL, another (better) Donnie Yen film.
