Thanks for the tips! I started out recently on acoustic guitar and this helps with some chords I have issues with that cause buzzing or muting, like D7. F I find hard for now. 😬 You also have to see what works best for your own hands.
The perfect video for me right now. I'm just getting back into guitar and learning Hurt by Johnny Cash and of course, there's an F bar cord that I'm really struggling with. I'm very encouraged after watching this and will definitely keep at it! ☺
One of my problems currently is that I can play the barre kind of okay by itself, but to do so I have to do all the things you mentioned, particularly rolling the index finger to the outside edge, and raising the third knuckle to get the finger pressed down on the strings, but when I do this and the notes ring okay, the other fingers are stuck way out in space and it is very hard to bring them around to add the rest of the fingering that is needed. For example, barre on 2nd fret, then trying to play g# and a on 1st string and d# on 2nd string. If I get these on, then the a on the third string of the barre starts to go dull.
Good advice, as always. Something I've been doing recently is playing open chords using fingers 2,3,4. Not easy at first, and I still play them normally too. But for part of my practice I just use those 3 fingers to help develop strength and dexterity. Any thoughts on that?
I can do regular barre chords but for the F7 the D string is muted or buzzing. It's been a year of practice trying to get rid of it any tips? I go do the Fm7 because i can use my 2nd finger to push down harder.
Hi Michael. If you've really been working at it for a year might be time to get some help from a teacher. I would be good to have your guitar checked out also.
The way I learned to play bar chords is by forming your hand into a shovel....almost like you are holding something, but bringing your thumb into the middle of your palm. Also realize that when you begin to learn them, you probably don't have the strength to do them for very long. I didn't. The more you practice, the better you will get! Don't give up.
Thanks so much for this. I have been doing things all wrong as a beginner, and your great tips should help a lot.
You're very welcome Paul!
Thanks!

Thanks Rami... nice to hear from you.

Thank you Tomas I keep trying..I have seen roll it back and roll it forward.. Can't seem to find my fit ..I will keep at it...
Nice to hear from you JoAnn. This is something that usually takes experimenting and persistence. It also helps to put lighter strings on the guitar.

I think that's a great exercise to help with bar chords. Thanks for sharing.

i see why the vid has no dislikes :)
Thanks Liam.
I can play them just fine on classical guitar, now i grabbed an acoustic with metal strings and i can't 😭 what is this
You just need to adjust your fingers to using steel strings, once they work up their strength your bar chord abilities will spring back!
Really good video and explanation. It’ll definitely help. You do know that you spelled “Barr” wrong 😂
I use two spellings -barre and bar as that is what people search for online. :)
