I am so excited to be rolling out a brand new series all about small spaces! We’re talking furniture pieces, best studio apartment layouts, outdoor terrace and balcony ideas, tiny bathroom upgrades, even Feng Shui tips for your studio space where it’s one giant room. Kitchen storage hacks, bedroom styling hacks… I hope to cover all of your major issues when it comes to designing a small space.
Let’s get rolling with this first video in my SMALL SPACE SERIES- it’s all about furniture pieces that work overtime in small spaces. Consider your existing furnishings and ask yourself “How else can this piece be used?” If it serves double or even triple duty- it’s a keeper! For almost 20 years I lived in a very small and awkwardly designed 1930s row house in Wash DC. Even new furniture designed for tiny places would not fit right (seats were too deep) so I finally started to choose period pieces from the decade my house was built. It worked like a charm! Now we are in NYC and getting ready to move again to a new huge 3000 sq ft house in southeast VA so all the tiny furniture has to go because it looks like doll furniture. Oh well!

Tiny living room and dining. Am concerned about maintaining a walkway and placement of rug in a small narrow space where the entry will be on one side (the right) and the seating area unavoidably on the other (the left) when there is a fireplace at the right corner forcing traffic to the middle left to get to the dining room and kitchen which are at the back end of the space. Space is a mere, 147 inches wide with a fireplace wall of 67 inches wide..... I need your help!!!

@@JulieKhuu please advise if it is ever acceptable to place a hanging light off center over a round dining table in a small space. The table runs off a small rectangular living room and the dining room is approx 89"W x 128"L. Was thinking of doing a banquet seating with round or oval table if I can. There is also a walkway to a deck through this small dining room. Thanks for your insight.

@@JulieKhuu I’m in the process of hiring a contractor that will draw up a 3D design and re-arrange my furniture. I’m going to use the longest wall in the living room to place the couch. After everything is re-arranged, then i will decide what to donate that isn’t working in my space. It’s just very overwhelming because I’ve lived here for over 30 years and while i like the location, i have little space as it is a small one bedroom.

It was great! I wouldn’t think to go for a long sofa but with this I am confident with one that goes with the width of my wall, also the big area rug is something I wouldn’t consider with the size but thanks for confirming both! Now I can confidently opt for a big rug! Also love that it is confirmed that a small round dining table works and a big light pendant also works!!! Super valuable and encourages to go more daring than usual!

So for a small 10x10 bedroom. We have just a twin bed, night stand, desk, and chair for furniture. Would a 5x7 rug work? I plan to use a day bed against a wall w a TV hung on opposite wall above desk so there is space mid-room to move around. It also has to be a walkway thru the room.
Depends on the area you’re trying to define Teresa. If it goes under the bed only, sure 👍🏻

Thank you for acknowledging that sometimes the couch has to go against the wall! There's so much advice about pulling couches out to seating areas/arrangements and maintaining ease of flow and movement between furniture. And my response is always: okay, but which? I mean, I can do one or the other, lol.
I always prioritize what the sofa has to face then place it accordingly 👍🏻

Great video Julie, In the summer, Wendy and I travel on our Catalina 30 sailboat, 175 square feet of living space, now that is small, we usually travel with another couple, and our dogs. More to the point, we love Sarah Susanka's "Not so big house" books, Sarah spent several seasons aboard boats in San Francisco. Everything you say in this video is what we practice on the boat. Including Mirrors, we installed plastic mirrors because we cannot have glass on the boat, but the effect is the same.

10:35 TV is a bit too high for comfortable viewing - it looks like it was hung to match the top of the larger art piece and leave art space on the console - but this studio apartment is done up beautifully:
The tall white lamp in front of the gray blackout curtains? *chef's kiss. Wide aisle, lovely blond flooring with nuance. Variations on black, gray, and blue-gray with white. Lovely, clean, functional. Nice blend of soft fabrics and hard surfaces. Nice rectangular space to work with, too, minus those two little bumps at the end, that actually give the room a nice little layered look when painted the same as the rest of the walls.
I like a lot of the eclectic sets and bold accents in other images you share, too.
14:17 Again, TV is too high compared to couch placement - unless you watch TV standing up. Hang it lower, and put art above it if the space above feels too big.
