Fun fact: Catherine was offered the main role for the film, but turned it down because she wanted to sing “all that jazz”
Don't blame her

Poor Katalin (aka the Hunyak)! She is the only wrongfully-accused killer. (Note the white scarf in her dance sequence, while everyone else’s is red). Corruption and prejudice won, all because Katalin’s English was limited, and she didn’t have the cash, with which to bribe the scum bag Billy Flynn

Fun fact about this musical: Catherine Zeta-Jones was pregnant while filming it (and she looks 10 times better than my current non pregnant 20 year old self)
Lol it took like over 9months to film and then several months to distribute and then play in the cinema and then get nominated for an award where she's performing the song while heavily pregnant.
How did we conclude she was pregnant DURING filming again?
No she was pregnant when she won the Oscar. This is impossible for her to be pregnant while filming it
Facts. Catherine zeta Jones is just beautiful, simply beautiful that's all there is. Dancing her cute butt off while pregnant and shes still beautiful and fierce
Filming for Chicago concluded in March 2002. Carys Zeta Douglas was born April 2003. That math ain't mathing.
Have you read some misinformation or did you make that up yourself?
I like how Watkins was able to turn this murder trails into art. It also shows a lot about society’s obsession with women’s beauty and drama. As a Chicagoan, I never seen Chicago and after seeing this video, makes me what to watch it now.
Tiffany Reene-I would highly recommend the movie adaptation of the musical. I first saw the movie when I was a teenager, & Chicago has been one of my favourite musicals ever since.

Nice research, but it goes to show you that you can make a musical out of anything. About 5 or 6 years ago an aquaintance told me a musical had been made out of Silence of the Lambs. He then sang me a sample. I was gobsmacked.
what is the name of the musical? the silence of the lambs one
@@lauraabreu9288 He told me it was Silence of the Lambs-the musical. I never followed up because it didn't interest me.
A successful musical is different than just making a musical. Silence! The Musical was not successful.
@@Traci1978 1) Thank you for the follow up. I didn't know the name of the musical. I was gobsmacked that someone would make light of murder.
2) Silence, the movie, is an aquired taste. I found it gripping but my mother wouldn't see it on fears of it being graphic.
3) A movie producer's fear is that the person he selects for the score could ruin the movie but if silence can be set to music anything can.
4) Much hyped plays have opened on Broadway and closed the same night. That doesn't mean people won't try. Cats was a hit on and off Broadway for decades. The Cats movie, despite an all star line up flopped bad at the box office. Recently binge watching a 1991 TV series I heard a joke-anything with cats in it is guaranteed to flop. Yikes!!

I'm so tired of people disrespecting a creators work just for money. They waited until she died. Just like Nickelodeon did with Stephen Hillenburg. It's disgusting.
What happened m
who gives a shit, she's dead! and thank god for it-- we would'nt have had such an amazing work if it weren't for it!
so true
I wouldn't say they 'disrespected' it per se, but don't forget they brought to light 'a true crime story of two women' that shows just what lengths people will go to to get themselves noticed.Selfish purposes behind it all, perhaps. But people can look at it and see where someone made a truly SELFISH, SELF-SERVING choice to save themselves. A real rags to riches story, sort of, which Gwen Verndon and Bob Fosse saw the potential in to bring to the stage and eventually the screen.
To be honest, the broadway musical (and film based from it) is more respectful of the authors original work than the two films made while she was alive.
I don’t think it was till I saw an episode of “Deadly Women” that covered the actual case. You can call it one of those almost too crazy to be true, but that’s true crime for you :)
What episode?
Season 14
Killer intellect
Richard Gere should have got the Oscar for Best Actor!
Sadly he was blacklisted due to his denouncing of Chicago. He was the only one not nominated.
Love this musical! I think it's a tie between Chicago and Cabaret as the best Kander and Ebb musical.
Ha! Me, too. I have both on DVD, and re-watch whenever I need a lift.

Leave it to Ms Mojo to find it!
There is a great book I listened to on Audible last summer called "The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago" by Douglas Perry. I suspect it was the main source of info for this video. Very interesting and very informative.

I never knew that there were two other movies that Chicago was based. I will have to find them at the library . Thanks Ms. Mojo.😇

The Six Merry Murderess of the cook county jail
Hi, Miss Mojo 👋🏽😄
Hey there!
Beulah Annan is buried in Daviess County, Ky
I prefer the live musical to the movie, I saw Robin Givens as Roxie, a hilarious South African actress on loan as Velma, and the actor who play Mr. Peterman on Seinfeld was excellent as Billy Flynn.
"Chicago" is one of the few movie musicals I prefer over the stage version. Stage productions have better performers, but I felt the movie was presented better.
The original staging presented the story as a series of vaudeville acts as fits the era. I've never seen that entire production (just publicity excerpts) so I can't judge it.
I did see the revival, and it just felt flat to me. Black costumes and mostly bland staging. I found the movie framed as movie musical numbers from Roxie's point of view more engaging generally.
@@tophers3756 The movie is closer to the original Bob Fosse production than the stage revival. CHICAGO was written to be performed as if it were a vaudeville show. Just about every number imitated a star or routine from vaudeville.
Hi Ms.Mojo Nice Video!
Damn that jazz music .
OHMYGOD THEY USED A CLIP FROM DRUNK HISTORYYYYYYYY
It's interesting to note that Belva Gaertner's crime was committed in March, Beulah Annan's in April, and the Leopold and Loeb murdered Bobby Franks in May. A month a part in 1924, all in Chicago.
Excellent research and well presented, snappy video. Thank you.

During my senior year in high school, Ashland High school in Ashland Oregon did Chicago the play. For a high school play, I thaught they did a good job.
"they both reached for the gun, she got to it first while he started getting dressed".
I love this musical💋
I had the honour if playing Amos Hart, a life time ago.
Mr. Cellophane!
Richard Gere was the miscast that kept the movie from being fully iconic
Who, do you think, would be the right choice?

Wao..love the musical play of Chicago..incredibly art..
Wait. Chicago was based on a true crime story, but the Broadway musical (and subsequent film) were both inspired by the 1942 film Roxie Hart starring Ginger Rogers. I don't know how this detail was overlooked.

"Chicago" was a good film, but "The Pianist " should have won the Best Picture Award.
Harvey Weinsten made it possible.
