I don't know about everyone else, but the discs on the right side are very difficult to get out. I went ahead and bought some empty cases to put them in
Looks great but I’m a little disappointed at the lack of bonus features. I was expecting audio commentaries for all the films, as well as both versions of each film.
Angus Lamont Getting both versions of each film would’ve been nice, yes. But in classic Godzilla style, ToHo doesn’t own the rights some of the American cuts of their own films.. including whatever bonus content those releases came with, which is a shame. Angus Lamont Criterion has commentary for pretty much all of these films though and they’re the most in depth ones you’ll find. They might be on the disc. If not, some are online.
If you're talking about dubs when you mean "both versions", you don't collect much Criterion. Criterion doesn't usually put dubs in their releases of foreign films. Ever. It's a complete shock we got as many dubs as we did. Dubs don't hold any value when it comes to the preservation and showcasing of films as they were intended to be seen (which is Criterion's whole reason for being), in fact, dubs do the exact opposite of that. Devout Mothra Follower Devout Mothra Follower he wasn’t talking about dubs. With that being said, I agree. However, dubbing wasn’t initially meant for disrespect. The first Japanese film to get dubbing was Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon.” Originally, the planned on using subtitles, but opted against it to appeal to a wider audience (literacy rates and what not). So initially, during that era, if a film were to be dubbed, it was considered an honor on the studios’ part (despite how cheesy it is and how poorly said dubbing has aged). Keep in mind too, if you have the Barnes and Noble discount card, that they run 50 percent off the Criterion films about twice a year. I got my Zatoichi collection like that, costing me $99 instead of the list price.
Criterion hasn’t said anything about an individual release, we’re just assuming it won’t happen, which why the fans are just making smaller boxed versions. We’ve been keeping an eye out tho, just in case!
Killer looking collection...! Can’t wait to get my hands on it. One thing, all the focus on the incredible art and not a single name drop on who did each page.
Scratching a blu-Ray disc to the point to where it skips and is useless is a hard thing to accomplish. Long as you’re careful, they’ll be fine. Plus, Criterion wouldn’t toss something dangerous into a product like that, especially for that price.
It is not worth it IMHO unless you just don't have these films already. The transfers are no better than what was previously out there, even on DVD. The book is beautiful though, the films (the transfers) are not.
For anyone to say this is to big is just crazy talk.As many discs that is included what kind of packaging would they have preferred ? A cheap case? I think this set and its packaging is amazing. They made this special signifying how treasured these movie's are.In this case bigger is definitely better and well worth the price.
Seeing as how SONY still owns the rights to both the majority of those series, I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon.. unless criterion buys Sony out lol
@@ShinRobjira Heisei ill be looking forward to. Sony could always make a set with their movies. Millennium would be a after thought as there are pack DVD's already with all of them. Is this set in better remastered a bit at least?
Let’s not forget Miramax owns Godzilla Vs Biollante, miramax is now owned by Disney. So who knows when we’d see that movie again & Sony just gave up the rights to Heisei Ghidorah & Mothra so I cant seem them doing a Heisei set at this point. Millennium series wise I’m pretty sure they have everything.. so if anything maybe that. No clue. The Criterion Collection do feature new transfers of the movies, while good they’re not AS GREAT as they could’ve been, due to Toho being really restrictive with their content. As of now, Showa era wise, this set is your best bet.
Should have mine in the new few days, I’m tempted to buy a second one to keep sealed. A few years ago I would’ve never thought we’d get a blu ray release like this, let alone from Criterion. Pretty cool that they made it their 1000 spine too. Hope to see the Heisei and Millennium series get this treatment eventually.
Steven Lornie Because I know I’ll want a pristine copy. While I’m sure that the material used on this release is of high quality, but I do like to watch my movies and there’s also kids involved in my life. Over time I know it’ll get dinged and scuffed up so as an enormous fan it’ll ease my anxieties of having a copy that I know is in good condition. Also, as someone who loves owning physical media I know that prices can skyrocket in the secondary market once something goes out of print.
Scott McAree Invasion of Astro-Monster, King Kong Vs Godzilla, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all have their Japanese cuts and English Dubs. The rest are strictly Japanese

God damn it I hate when the disks are packaged like that! That’s how they get scratched no matter what! People say well people aren’t going to pull them in and out and watch them constantly. I do
Blu Rays have anti scratch coatings on them as part of the Blu Ray specification, so cardboard sleeves and digibooks aren't a big deal for Blu Ray. It's not great for DVDs though
Don’t people know if they have Barnes and noble they get it faster and cheaper without having to pay shipping and handling tax in mail I pass on this I have 32 Godzilla movies
A decent portion of the Showa era hadn't been reissued on disc for nearly a decade, officially at least. They were hard to find for good prices on top of that. The Heisei movies are pretty readily available in full aside from Godzilla Vs Biollante.
Son of Godzilla & Terror of Mecha-Godzilla averaged out at $100+ on amazon and eBay for a loooong time because no one had the rights to re-release them. Sometimes they went for even more than this set alone. The heisei series being scattered about double feature blu ray releases and random DVD collections from SONY for $20 or less really isn’t a problem at all.
@@ShinRobjira Terror of mechagodzilla was 3$ when I got it 3-4 years ago Just because amazon is overcharging and ripping everyone off doesn't mean the movies are worth that much
I was just stating some of the movies were hard to find, out of print and overpriced.. it happened more with the Showa era than the Heisei era, hence why this collection exists.
Milo 45 Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla, King Kong vs Godzilla all have their Dubs and such, the rest is all just Japanese.
Why do people want the English dubs so badly? I would think you would want the movies as they were originally intended. Unless, I suppose, you memorized the english versions as a kid, or enjoy looking at poorly dubbed movies. Otherwise, I personally can't see the appeal.
I guess it’s the sense of a true “complete” collection from those who don’t have the dvds, VHS copies or they just wanted them on blu-Ray.. which I can’t see not happening outside of this collection. As for those expecting the dubs.. the website and the trailer told ya what was coming lol
There IS no appeal, friend. Criterion doesn't usually put dubs I their releases of foreign films. Ever. It's a complete shock we got as many dubs as we did. Compared the discs in this from my brother's copy that arrived this week to the stack of the original individual blurays I have and there's really no difference in image quality and frankly the subtitles look better on the older releases. Soooo....gotta say awfully disappointed for the list price of this. Glad I didn't spend it lol.

For anyone to say this is to big is just crazy talk.As many discs that is included what kind of packaging would they have preferred ? A cheap case? I think this set and its packaging is amazing. They made this special signifying how treasured these movie's are.In this case bigger is definitely better and well worth the price.
I would have preferred the collection to be in a standard bluray set for fitting it in the collection and to take up less shelf space.
Is $112 worth the price?
Tasty Churro you’re getting the entire showa era on Blu-ray, some for the first time & with their original cuts, I’d say so!
@@ShinRobjira I've only ever seen 2 Godzilla movies and I've always wanted to expand into the older stuff. Hopefully I can get it soon. Thanks 👍
Universal should buy out Criterion.
how tf did you take the disks out
Great video!
What Region is the Blu-Ray set?
please be region FREE
Roughly how thick/wide is the spine?
That's a sexy KOTM Steelbook
will they make a Heisei series version? And a Millennium series one eventually?
Seeing as how SONY still owns the rights to both the majority of those series, I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon.. unless criterion buys Sony out lol
@@ShinRobjira
Heisei ill be looking forward to.
@@ShinRobjira maybe a team up could be possible. IDK how things work.
It just makes things difficult i guess. The demand is there thou.
The disc was made in Mexico, but we haven’t that discount 😔
Are they blu Ray or dvd
BluRay only
My favorite is Godzilla 1954 Godzilla king of monsters 1956 and king Kong vs Godzilla and Godzilla 1984 the return of Godzilla but I like them all
Damn thx for this bruh
Should have mine in the new few days, I’m tempted to buy a second one to keep sealed.
A few years ago I would’ve never thought we’d get a blu ray release like this, let alone from Criterion. Pretty cool that they made it their 1000 spine too.
Hope to see the Heisei and Millennium series get this treatment eventually.
Why would you keep it sealed? Waste of money.
@@stevenlornie1261 Are you the type of person that goes around policing what people do?
I want that book
Do all the films have there English Dubbed version?
Scott McAree Invasion of Astro-Monster, King Kong Vs Godzilla, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all have their Japanese cuts and English Dubs. The rest are strictly Japanese
@@ShinRobjira Thank you. :)
Gooooodzoooooookeeeeeee!!!!
Hope the UK gets as good of a deal as the Half price Barnes & Nobel deal... 😕
Does anyone know if his has DVDs or if it’s just Blu-ray’s cause I don’t own a Blu-ray player.
Never mind I looked it up. It’s just Blu-ray.
Logan Jones it’s just a Blu-ray release.
You don’t have an Xbox one or a PS4 you could use?
I’m so behind on modern systems that the only modern system I have is a switch. Does a Xbox 360 play them?
Buy a Blu Ray player...duh!
Maybe someday. You all have a good night. Sleep well.
I think I'm gonna..... COMEEEE
Japans greatest @ 1:55 is "Made in Mexico" lol
I will seek ot out sunday
I called sunrise records and they said it was $220 is there another place I can go to not spend that amount of money for this that seems a little over price and kind of a rip-off for me..
Dark Magician 50% off at Barnes & Nobles, Amazon has em with a nice price cut as well. Either of those two are good places to purchase the collection.
Does anyone know which movies are in English and which are Japanese? It says that some are just Japanese
The Video Deity
Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all have their Dubs and original cuts, the rest are all just the Japanese cuts with no dubs.
@@ShinRobjira Thank you!
oh hey u got the shin chan buttzilla lol
WANT!!!
Are there digital codes for all 15 movies? Or it is just the physical copies?
Just physical, no codes sadly
"Godzillia Vs. CRI-TER-I-ON" (2024)
God damn it I hate when the disks are packaged like that!
John Herman my mummy movies and avatar movie got scratched if you got the book ones
Crap I missed the premiere😐
Don’t people know if they have Barnes and noble they get it faster and cheaper without having to pay shipping and handling tax in mail I pass on this I have 32 Godzilla movies
Criterion are fucking up packaging here. Same with notld. Nobody wants a crappy paper digibook.
Why are these the movies included? They're common as hell and have been easy to find forever
The 80s and 90's movies are what everybody wants
A decent portion of the Showa era hadn't been reissued on disc for nearly a decade, officially at least. They were hard to find for good prices on top of that.
The Heisei movies are pretty readily available in full aside from Godzilla Vs Biollante.
@@ShinRobjira The bulk of them are cheap in bargain bins but the 80s and 90s ones are always hard to find and cost 20$ or more each
Son of Godzilla & Terror of Mecha-Godzilla averaged out at $100+ on amazon and eBay for a loooong time because no one had the rights to re-release them. Sometimes they went for even more than this set alone. The heisei series being scattered about double feature blu ray releases and random DVD collections from SONY for $20 or less really isn’t a problem at all.
@@ShinRobjira Terror of mechagodzilla was 3$ when I got it 3-4 years ago
Just because amazon is overcharging and ripping everyone off doesn't mean the movies are worth that much
I was just stating some of the movies were hard to find, out of print and overpriced.. it happened more with the Showa era than the Heisei era, hence why this collection exists.
Are all 15 in Japanese
Milo 45 Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla, King Kong vs Godzilla all have their Dubs and such, the rest is all just Japanese.
does it have japanese closed captions? i guess not?
Dubs don't hold any value when it comes to the preservation and showcasing of films as they were intended to be seen (which is Criterion's whole reason for being), in fact, dubs do the exact opposite of that. Dubs are the reason Godzilla is a laughing stock among normie film buffs who aren't already fans of the franchise. Dubs are the reason Godzilla has the reputation he does that the Heisei, Millennium, Reiwa series or even the MonsterVerse has yet to rectify.
Dubs are a Plague on films, and complaining about the lack of them in a release meant for serious film enthusiasts is asinine.
It looks so great but I'm not gonna get it.
People complain about it being big?!? What's wrong with it being big it looks 😍 especially for it size
I imagine just finding a place for it seems to be most people’s worry. Which is understandable. But, c’mon.
Godzilla deserves that shelf presence!
just give me the Heisei Era collection
Would love a proper Heisei Era collection release. But with the rights as tied up as they are.. We'd be lucky to get more of what we already have. Such a bummer.
