The busiest level crossing in Hampshire, on the South Western Main Line near Northam Junction and Northam Depot, near Southampton city centre. This crossing has four tracks with a slow line and a faster line for both directions. The level crossing has four LED warning lights with rare and old ‘GWE’ barriers. The barrier arms and skirting have been replaced within the last couple of years, which has saved the complete replacement of the barrier arms and units themselves. There are bells held within the GWE barrier units. This crossing is by far the busiest in Hampshire, with up-to 21 trains passing in an hour, equating to one every (just under) 3 minutes. This makes it one of the busiest in the UK. Whilst filming for around 45 minutes here, the crossing spent more time closed than raised, and there was a consistent build-up of traffic. There are signs stating that long delays can occur, and that vehicle engines should be switched off. The longest closure filmed was 8 minutes for 5 trains! Certainly an interesting crossing.
There are two consecutive closures in this video! The crossing was raised for only around 15 seconds before being lowered again, on two occasions in a row!
    Thanks For Watching!

WOW! I don't think you've ever done a video featuring a triple closure at a crossing with the vintage bells before, so this video is unique and perfect timing too to catch it! ;-)

Thank you 😊 I think this is the only time I have caught this. It is the busiest road crossing in the UK so there are constantly trains passing

I got 6 trains in one closure at Lolham L/C yesterday and the total time was around 6 minutes for one closure

Great video! Cool how it was up for such a short amount of time twice in a row there. Pleasantly surprised that the retro equipment (i.e. the barriers and bells) has remained in for so long given just how busy with trains it is. This part of the SWML is quite the bottleneck seeing as it goes back to two tracks into Southampton Central station.

Thank you 😁 I’m surprised it hasn’t had any sort of upgrade as it is so busy. Regardless, makes it a very cool crossing the way it is

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I think there might be the small matter that; the two tracks to Southampton Central, go in part in a tunnel under Southampton City Centre,
This has historically been a busy crossing even before the Northerm Traincare Facility was built; this site was previously sidings used (presumably) for trains heading into Southampton Eastern Docks.
ℹ️ For though that are not local to Southampton; this crossing is just to one side of Northerm Junction, at which trains either head towards Southampton Central (↖️) or Southampton Eastern Docks (⬅️ via Chapel Road and Canute Road Level Crossings - "Rare, Massive crossing...") and St Deny's Station which sees trains (via the Up/Down Slow lines) heading towards Fareham (↘️) or towards Eastleigh, and onwards to Romsey/Waterloo (➡️ via the Up/Down Fast lines). Arrows in the context of the open shot.
Apologies if I sound like an anorak, but I am Southampton born and bread...

No wonder why this crossing has so many red light jumpers. Drivers and pedestrians.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel

Yeah you can kind of see why people don’t want to wait as there’s so many trains. However, that isn’t a good excuse for running red lights and obstructing lowering barriers.
