From 72 year old fellow artist. This man amazingly puts into words what all artists lived and live. From childhood, to becoming the "draughtsman" to becoming the fulfilled artist. Young artists take heed its a whole way of life that grows and grows and grows.
You are not only a great artist… you have something that it's very unusual when a person has such a talent: the taste and pleasure of teaching and a touching unpretentiousness ❤
Thank you Mr. Lustenhouwer. Fantastic lesson. I'm an artist of many years and still learning. Interesting to learn from your experiences among different people in different countries. And your portraits! Wow!! I have been commissioned here in East Africa severally for paintings but if I paint like you, I will always have work. Will improve. I am self-taught and my problem has been to apply the right colour in the right place as you said - but also to do it without fear. Thanks. Ben Ben
Xi have learned so much from what you post on RUclips , I even take still pictures of your work so I can study them and use them as a guide. Thank you so much.

Wonderful to hear your life story and Journey as an artist Ben😊, I love painting and creating however frustrating as a beginner painting can be ,I remind myself to enjoy the process and improve.

Wonderfull wonderfull work. Astonding the expression of the faces. i could just look at your paintings for hours - and i hardly ever said that - thank you for a young artists inspiration
My instructors referred to themselves as craft persons because they didn't feel comfortable with the term artist. A craft person works at a craft and is constantly learning. Seems to me the word artist comes across as finished. Your paintings are full of life and energy. Conveying the closeness between the child and grandfather comes across extremely well!
@@lustenhouwer I am sure a lot of people feels the same way. I am really glad I found your channel, I even shared it on my fb account. Stay safe always
Fantastic channel, I subscribed right away. I rarely do portraits myself, but I can see your work is on an incredible level. Amazing brushwork, amazing colors.
I have been a carpenter for 45 years and now am ready to start painting . After leaving school I wanted to go to art school but my father refused , so we have a role reversal desire in common.
Hola Jose Muchas gracias por tu mensaje. Ya estoy en él. Ojalá en febrero mi primero en App Atore. Una demostración de más de una hora en que explico todo. Un saludo desde España.
How in the world did the old masters do portraits? Hours of sitting? I listened carefully to your explanation of working from photos. I found myself feeling relieved as I never could gert my children to sit still for a sketch ( I wrote I had 8 children 5 sons three adopted girls). I hated school so when my kids were little, I taught them at home giving me great insight and allowing me to be free with my kids. The are adults now and I have time to learn so I turned to wanting to be more of a draftsman not just a happy accident painter. We did not travel but lived a simple life in the country 18 acres. I want to work from some of my photos of my goats, sheep kids and life around that time from my photos. The movement of the sun always changes the character of the model which I find frustrating which is why I can proceed with photos and not feel guilty. My husband is a physician and can do many creative woodworking, construction, gardening, airplane model building things. I mention that because I agree with your thinking of yourself as a draftsmen a very humble perception of yourself. Art is everywhere in society: creating portraits, music, innovation in science, building a chair. No reply is necessary I thank you for your insight.
what beautiful work you do, I am struggling changing from acrylic to oil, I find it very challenging but feel I need to advance to oil to have more control of my work. your video just confirmed that for me...portrait perfection. warmest regards, Jean
I completely agree with painting from photographs. For ages I felt like my work was 'cheap' because it was from photographs but you soon realise that you can't capture human emotion so immediately
No entiendo nada de lo dices Ben,pero me encanta tu modo de trabajar y la luz que sacas en tus retratos,un día de estos hablamos para ver si me haces uno. Seria un orgullo para mi. Un saludo.
Great Mr. Ben! It is indeed heartening to see your wonderful control over oil paints keeping them fresh and clean! Also happy to find someone painting from photographs, unlike the purists who abhor the idea of using photos! Tell me one thing,do you use tracing papers or enlargers etc. for the initial outlines as I do? Warm Regards, c.s. pant
I really liked the fact you touched on the fact you consider yourself a craftsman rather than an artist. I would consider you a master craftsman. I also believe the label of "art" or "artist" is stifling. If I want to create garbage, all I need to do is set out to create "art." Art is so subjective and it can lead to sloppiness as you seem to have found in art school. I also went to art college in the late 70's and the type of "art" they cultivated required required little discipline and much interpretation. As a person into representational art, I also consider it a craft. The art comes from the expertise in the craft, like , as you alluded to in the interview, a finely crafted piece of furniture or a finely crafted boat. That requires discipline and not just the interpretation of the crowd that's in style. I don't have to interpret your paintings. I enjoy them at first glance. They aren't photographs or photographic representations. . They are very beautiful paintings with much skill ( craftsmanship and, and dare I say, artistry), and the glimpse of the world though another persons eyes. I enjoyed your interview very much. You are a great teacher and thank you for all your work in making all of this available.
sir u word touch me... 30 is still young for portrait... i was very discourage because i cant do portrait, i dont have painting background but i always knew im born with it. whenever i paint i lost hold of the time... thank you very much
Yes, certain things can be easy. But keep in mind artists are able to achieve this privilege (as I like to call it) through talent and hard work. The average person cannot do this therefore it is extremely difficult. Another thing I'd like to mention is while every artist has his or her own preference in regards to creating a portrait, exaggeration should never be undermined because it is a form of creativity. We must always strive further than painting what we see in a photo. That said, you, sir, have an excellent way of handling paint (oils I assume).
You paintings are wonderful, you are really amazing painter, ths for teaching us how to paint portrait which I do need to learn how to paint portrait more. Wishing you n yr fam are having a great week. Regard, Lily

waaooo master sensei you inspire the shit out of me after this im gona take those oils again with less fear than before ..... i always leave those two white dots for last its magic
Ben, are there any rules for adding light spots to the eyes, like here in the final scene? Or is it more spontaneous? Seems like spots on the right side of the eyes would be the best place here. I can be wrong of course.
This is what I usually do more or less. When the light source comes from the left I put the lights on " eleven o'clock" When the source comes from the right : " One o'clock. if you understand what I mean.
I live right between Alicante and Valencia, I've been painting for about 6 months. Do you have a studio where your paintings are on display? Do you give one -on-one lessons at all?
