This is just such a clever way to knit socks. I'm definitely trying it on my next pair. I also want to have a go at choosing some detail stitches. Thank you so much for this tutorial x
WOW! I just found you day as I was looking for tutorials on how to do afterthought heels. After watching this video and learning so much, I had to go watch some earlier videos. I found out I just missed a KAL for shorty socks. You are an amazing teacher and so friendly. I now feel like I can knit a pair of socks that will fit. I knit a pair about 5 years ago that are so big they fall off my feet when I wear them to bed to keep my feet warm. Knitting a pair of socks that I can wear is a goal I have for this year.
I've watched a lot of videos on the afterthought heel and this is the first that really addressed what is happening with the 2 stitches left on each side. I'm so grateful to you for teaching this method so clearly! Now to go make my socks 😁
Your thoroughness is astounding and thanks to you I finished my first pair of socks and I posted in the FO thread on the forum, along with a picture. I just cast on my next sock on DPN's and am going to knit a tube, top down, and using the markers without the waste yarn is my next heel! Can't wait. Thank you so much for all of the time you have put into these tutorials! Hearts and hugs to you from Fern in Minnesota! My fear of socks is gone, vanished and besides that I am now thinking of beginning color work. I really do need to finish the scarf I have as a wip first! Thanks for helping me realize I can do anything. All it takes is a village of talented teachers!!!! I'm looking forward to passing on what I have learned...
Thankyou so much for doing this tutorial, your heel without the waste yarn is truly beautiful, I have done the afterthought heel this way before and I MUST say your tutorial was just so clear and very helpful bravo, We can always learn a better way of doing things in knitting this was truly a joy to watch thankyou again for taking the time and effort to show us how this should be done, very well done thankyou!
Denise, thank you so much for all the details of your tutorial!! I love having all this information in one place! You’ve given me the courage to try the afterthought heel!!

@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Exactly. I use twisted st8tches all the time. Twisted stitches and crossed stitches and the right size of needles will make a thick and thin cheaper yarn look good when knitted, better than it deserves to look. . I M speaking of not socks and of bigger gauge yarn on that.

Hello Denise. This is my second video of yours that I'm watching. It's so nice to see your lovely face. I am currently knitting a set of "fore-thought" socks. I only had 100g for my socks, so I ordered extra yarn to knit the heels and toes. The fore-thought heels allowed me to budget my yarn for each sock (50g per). I loved listening to your talk of the hows & whys.
Thank you for this video demonstration of the after-thought heel. I like so many other knitters probably would not have had the confidence to try/attempt this type of heel. Your demo makes it so clear and actually make it look not as daunting!!!! I will be trying as soon as I get my two sock WIPs done. thanks again!!!
Thank you so much for watching Melinda and for your wonderful feedback!!! It means so much to hear that my tutorial is actually helpful to knitters. That makes me so happy!!
Love the waste yarn idea have such trouble following which row I have to pick up, specially with sock yarn. So now I'll be using waste yarn with every sock . Thanks . Oh you ramble a bit .
Hi Helen, You’re welcome! I’m glad that you like the idea of using waste yarn. It is a very helpful tool when Knitting afterthought heels! And I apologize for the rambling. It’s what I tend to do and how I teach. If that bothers you, that is the beauty of the Internet and RUclips, finding other viewing options that suit your needs.
Hi again have just done the waste yarn on the second sock . It is just wonderful picked up the stitches in record time . Now knitting the heel. Once again thanks for this idea.
Thank you! Thank you! For this great video. I knit socks toe up and have never done and after thought heel. But After seeing this video I will definitely try it. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of your podcast. You’re a great teacher!
Just a hint, for picking up heel stitches, use one or two sizes smaller (DPN's are good for this) than used for the main socks! That way the sts are a lot easier to pick up and you don't get that buldge as when using the same size as was knitted. You can leave them on the smaller needles, as when knitting back across the row, you will use your original sized needles as used for knitting the main sock.....!
That was a clear demonstration, thank you! I had my knitting and I did it with you, 🤣 it was funny when We were getting ready to insert the cord to hold the stitches, my adrenaline was up and you start talking about how you store your needles. Hilarious 😆
I absolutely enjoyed this video and I didn't pass out when you cut the yarn! Thanks for sharing and I might get brave enough to do it for myself one of these days
Excellent demo! I love the no waste yarn method hands down! I have a pair waiting for the heel and just started my first toe up sock which will also get the afterthought heel. Having a ball🤗 Thanks so much for Sharing!🌻❣

@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast I'm watching this again. I've gone back to knitting, and i really want to get a handle on all the sock constructions. I am finishing the second sock of a pair with afterthought heels and a gusset. The gusset is pretty small. THe waste yarn is knit over the sole stitches and gusset, and then purled back decreasing to the original stitch number.
Thank you so much for this! You have inspired me to be more brave when I knit my next pair of socks... and go for a after thought heal without waste yarn!!😱✂️😀🙏 Again, thank you for taking your time to do this🙏🏼💗💗💗
Inspiration wow so happy to find you your passion inspired me to try a new heel I learned heel flap and gusset from my mom thanks so much Hannah from the Cozy cottage crochet linked your tutorial so glad she did this link😊

The knitting jargon can be like learning a new language😃😂 Example KAL, ADVENT calendar etc. 🙄 can you one day to a video explaining a few. Thanks so much
Thank you. I really enjoyed this video. I did not know you could do an after thought heel. The stripes are fantastic. Beautiful. I will have to try one 😊🧶🌈
If you put your waste yarn only in the center 30 stitches and knit the one on either end with your regular yarn like you did the other side of the sock, and then still pick up the full 32 top and bottom, it will be closer to the Kirby Wirby technique and not give you holes, and you don't have to pick up Edge stitches.
so with the waste yarn method, couldn't one just go in with the waste yarn 2 sts on each end and it would come out the same as the "cutting" method? Just when putting the knitting needle in above and below the waste yarn, go 2 sts on either side before taking the waste yarn out???? Thanks for your help and generosity in showing this. I have not viewed Part 1 of your Sock Talk videos yet. but will before I make a sock. I have arthritis in my ankles and there for that area is quite thick. So I hope to find some method that works. I would hope the "after thought" would work since I like how it works. Any thoughts on this for my situation? Thanks again.
Hi there. I LOVE your videos. I would just like to request that you turn your volume up when recording. I was born with a hearing problem, but my iPhone volume won’t make your videos as loud as I’d like. Don’t know if anyone else has hearing issues too. Thank you for considering this. ☺️
iheartchkns - I turn on captions- (on right side with 3 dots, when you put video on pause. Tap the 3dots and the tap on captions) I also do this when I’m somewhere & don’t have my EarPods!
Love, love, love your videos. Working on my second pair of shorties. Quick question though...the fish lips kiss heel is my fave so would u still do the 15 rows ribbing, 15 st st then the heel? If you don’t know or haven’t tried it no problem just wondering.
Thank you so much for watching parts one and two. There is no part three because the short row heel that I wanted to teach was a paid for pattern. I also decided to switch over to my No Fear Sock Knitting classes. And I talk about the absence of a part three in my shadow wrap, short row heel tutorial. That is essentially part three.
Hi, I wonder what was the purpose of sliding the waste yarn stitches to a another needle (43:40)? I didn't get why that was done. Thanks for the nice video.
If watch a few minutes past 43:40 I explain that I am demonstrating the Waste yarn method. That is why the stitches are moved to another needle and then knit again.
Hi Leslie, The afterthought heel is placed where you want it go. If you like the leg of your sock to be 4 inches then knit to that length, place markers, I usual knit about 2 inch or so past that point then go back and cut in and knit the heel.
I'm now thinking what happens if you don't put the waste yarn throught all stitches and keep one or two stitches in each side of sock to prevent holes. So, maybe, knit one or two rounds without decrease to make more stretch.
Great tutorial, Denise! I greatly admire how you share information about other designers and ongoing KALs. I love striped socks, but have a high instep. Afterthought, fish lips kiss, and cut in heels do not fit as well as socks with gussets. Do you have any advice or thoughts on how to preserve the integrity of the stripes around the heel area AND have a great fitting sock for a high instep? Thanks, FrettyBetty
The heel pocket looks So narrow with 20 stitches across at the end of the bull’s-eye. Which heal do you think It’s the average yield the best. Which cup? I understand that the afterthought he’ll looks great with self striping Yarn which I use. Is there a demo of other heels with self striping yard to see how they look? I guess I could look at pictures somewhere
You can definitely look at pictures and fit is a very individual thing. One type of heel may work for one person and not another. It's all about experimenting/sampling to find the one that works for you.
When you talk about knitting a four rounds even before decreasing, does that include the first row of knitting (where you pick up the extra stitches)?or do you include the row? Thanks for your help!
Enjoyed your video, but I am looking for a demo of decreasing the heel itself. It seems like heel placement takes precedent, while I struggle with what follows. Still searching . . .
Hi Kay, I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling. Most patterns do explain how to knit the heel decreases. They are the same as standard wedge toe decreases. Once you've picked up all the stitches, knit one or two plains rounds, more if you want to the heel to be a bit deeper and then start decreasing. Knit 1, SSK, to the 3 stitches before the end, k2tog, K1, repeat on the other needle.(if using 2 circs or magic loop) Knit one plain round. Repeat these two rounds until you are down to approximately 10 to 12 stitches. Then do the kitchener stitch or Finchley graft. Hope that helps...if you need more help let me know.
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast Thanks very much for taking the time to explain for me. I've become a visual learner watching youtube, and the demos I saw that day sped through and frustrated me. I don't like reading patterns so I memorize the techniques. I am happy to hear from you and let you know that I am now one heel and one toe away fron finishing my first pair of hand knit socks! Keep up your good work and stay well.
Thank you very much. I think I understood everything. Know I just have to practice. :) One thing I am wondering about ... what beautiful yarn are you using?
I've watched so many sock tutorials and this one absolutely made everything so clear to me! Thank you so much! Also would love to know what kind of set up you use to film your hands?? I cannot manage to work out a set up for other art related video content I try to make. Thank you again, I am going to make some socks!
Thanks for this video. It is very helpful. I usually knit 16 inches before starting my toe decreases. Now maybe I can try making real socks versus tube socks.
Thank you for the information on the extra rows before starting the decrease rounds - I have an instep so high that my foot is almost like a brick [as high as it is long as it is wide - yes I have an EEE width - sigh] so even a few extra rows than you recommend could allow me to try the afterthought heel - they have always been way too tight across my instep.
Can you explain what is so precious about Instagram? I don’t know how to use instagram , so I miss out when mention something have on there. Sorry but I can’t seem to be able to figure it out.
Using Instagram is a very individual experience I find a lot of inspiration there, tons of it actually. I wouldn’t use the word precious to describe Instagram. It is a social media platform that has good and bad to it. I follow accounts that inspire me whether that’s with knitting or sewing. I follow a lot of yarn dyers so that I know when certain things are going on sale or will be available. And I follow what fiber friends are up to. Including events, festival, celebrations, etc. RUclips is a great source for learning the basic ins and outs and the functionality of Instagram. And then it’s just having fun going down the rabbit hole and finding accounts that you like.
Just tried the shadow wrap heel and it is fantastic. Can that technique be used with the afterthought heel? I like the idea of easily being able to replace a heel !! 👍
Hi Denise once again brilliant tutorial I was just wondering if you did the forethought heel but didn’t put waste yarn in the first two and last two stitches but still picked the left leg of the stitches above and below them would that give you the same result without holes as the afterthought heel? Also have you seen the RUclips video by Andrea Mowrey about putting lifelines above and below the waste yarn to make picking up easier
These are great tutorials! I have knit lots of toe up socks with afterthought heels, however, I typically do not use self striping yarn. Any suggestions of how to keep my eye from jumping to the wrong row when picking up stitches? I prefer not using waste yarn but I have a hard time staying on the same row when not using waste yarn. Hope this makes sense.
I started knitting at the age of 7. I'm now 58 and have been terrified of trying socks for long enough. I have great concern about cutting my knitting and picking up those stitches. Could I hold the stitches on a holder or cast off and cast on the next row to have an opening to knit the heel in to? I know there'd be a seam, but it's inside a shoe and non-knitters wouldn't know the difference. Thank you for any advice.
Believe me my friend, I completely understand that fear of cutting your knitting! Yes, you can do either of the techniques you mentioned by keep in mind your “corners/edges” may not be as neat as you may want them. I encourage whatever makes you comfortable and gets the socks in your feet!!!
Hi I'm doing an advent skein this year and it seems if you cut in instead of putting waste yarn in, you lose a row of color. Also is there a way to do the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought heel
Hi Teresa, Yes, you do lose a row of color. So putting in waste yarn might work better for me. I prefer the thrill of cutting and it's works out a bit neater for me. That is the fun of knitting, having lots of options. Yes, you can knit the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought, you just have to graft the stitches.
True afterthought heels are when you cut your knitting to put in your heel. Forethought heels are when you put in a line of waste yarn into your knitting that will be cut to make room for the heel.
At last, someone that clearly demonstrates where to begin the afterthought heel and how to use the sock ruler. THANK YOU!
There are many others ---- did you look for them?

That’s great! I love captioning. I will do that. Thanks for letting me know!
Love, love, love your videos. Working on my second pair of shorties. Quick question though...the fish lips kiss heel is my fave so would u still do the 15 rows ribbing, 15 st st then the heel? If you don’t know or haven’t tried it no problem just wondering.
Your video was great. Not as frightening as I thought it would be. Will give it a try.
Loving on this video today and getting ready to snip snip snip!!
Hello Denise, I have watched Part 1 and 2 but am unable to find "EarthtonesGirl | Sock Talk Pt. 3"?
24:06 Hi Denise. Can you suggest where on a knitted cuff to toe “tube” the truly afterthought heel should be placed. I like a 4-5” leg.
Hi Leslie,
The afterthought heel is placed where you want it go. If you like the leg of your sock to be 4 inches then knit to that length, place markers, I usual knit about 2 inch or so past that point then go back and cut in and knit the heel.
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast thx for taking the time to reply.
That was amazing! Thank you and now I want a sock ruler. I am going to cut in an after thought heel on my next sock. Eek! 🤭🙀🤗
OK, now I want to know how you graft your heels because that doesn't look like kitchener. mattress stitch ?
It doesn’t look it, but It is the Kitchener Stitch! Thanks for asking!
Oh wow! I need to up my kitchener game XD
I'm self taught knitter and I knit just like you!
🤩I need smelling/fainting salts for that rainbow yarn! Ooooo! Where did they come from?🤩
(I am referring to the toe-up socks you will be demo-ing). Thank you.
Thank you Gail. The name of the colorway is Firework by Must Stash Yarn
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast 😻oooh! thank you!😻
I'm now thinking what happens if you don't put the waste yarn throught all stitches and keep one or two stitches in each side of sock to prevent holes. So, maybe, knit one or two rounds without decrease to make more stretch.
Now I'm watching this ideia. You're trully amazing!
So simple but unknown trick. Adding the waste yarn, keep the tail in front. I’ve knit with the tail more than once
Thanks for the trick!!
Thank you so much for this clear tutorial, you did a fantastic job!
No it does not include the pick up round. The instruction is pick up the stitches THEN knit four rounds even before the decreases. Hope that helps..
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast it totally does! Thank you!
Thank you! I finally feel like I can actually knit a pair of socks.
Enjoyed your video, but I am looking for a demo of decreasing the heel itself. It seems like heel placement takes precedent, while I struggle with what follows. Still searching . . .
Hi Kay,
I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling. Most patterns do explain how to knit the heel decreases. They are the same as standard wedge toe decreases. Once you've picked up all the stitches, knit one or two plains rounds, more if you want to the heel to be a bit deeper and then start decreasing.
Knit 1, SSK, to the 3 stitches before the end, k2tog, K1, repeat on the other needle.(if using 2 circs or magic loop)
Knit one plain round.
Kay Murphy You’re very welcome!!
Awesome video. Thank you so much! 🙏🏻❤️
You are so welcome!
Thanks for this video. It is very helpful. I usually knit 16 inches before starting my toe decreases. Now maybe I can try making real socks versus tube socks.
I'm going to try the afterthought heel today. Would knitting your shadow wrap short row heel work with this?
Yes, you can knit the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought heel. You just have more stitches to graft at the end.
I'm so happy the extra rows were so helpful to you!!!
How did you find the 1st and last stitch for your heel? total newbie here Thanks
I'm a visual learner. Great tutorial but I would like a tutorial showing the heel being finished, not just the first few rows.
I hope you can find another free tutorial on RUclips that better suits your needs!
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast hi yes another lady showed the whole thing thanks. Your tutorials are amazing. My brain struggles lol 🥰
very very fine instruction, thank you from a danish girl:)
Kirbywirby's name is Cherie! She is one of my favorite stripe yarn dyers.
Just tried the shadow wrap heel and it is fantastic. Can that technique be used with the afterthought heel? I like the idea of easily being able to replace a heel !! 👍
Love your enthusiasm!! Again, yes it can be used as an afterthought heel!
Hi Denise once again brilliant tutorial
I was just wondering if you did the forethought heel but didn’t put waste yarn in the first two and last two stitches but still picked the left leg of the stitches above and below them would that give you the same result without holes as the afterthought heel?
Also have you seen the RUclips video by Andrea Mowrey about putting lifelines above and below the waste yarn to make picking up easier
These are great tutorials! I have knit lots of toe up socks with afterthought heels, however, I typically do not use self striping yarn. Any suggestions of how to keep my eye from jumping to the wrong row when picking up stitches? I prefer not using waste yarn but I have a hard time staying on the same row when not using waste yarn. Hope this makes sense.
Thank you for your knowledge and encouragement.
Hi Teresa,
Yes, you do lose a row of color. So putting in waste yarn might work better for me. I prefer the thrill of cutting and it's works out a bit neater for me. That is the fun of knitting, having lots of options.
Yes, you can knit the shadow wrap heel as an afterthought, you just have to graft the stitches.
Thanks so much for answering my question. Have a blessed holiday 🙏
@@teresayoung4145 You are very welcome. And I’m my response I meant to say “might work better for you”. I apologize for the error.
Great video!
Thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed it Peggy.
41:35 Hmm.. I'm thinking the waste yarn can be knitted across using a DPN so there'll be no need to transfer the stitches after.
Great idea!!!
Love your demonstrations. I kinda think you talk too much in the rest of it, but on the whole I love your videos!
Wow thanks so much Karen for that insult followed by the lovely compliment! If I talk too much for you simply move on.
@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast …but then I’m afraid I will miss something! Lol.
Love how you teach! TY
Thank YOU Carrie!!
That is genius, cutting a cardboard foot shape
Excellent! Thank you!
I have to share, you are beautiful and your demonstration makes me think I can really do this.
I am so happy to watch you do 🧦 I am so excited to make more socks with you ❤️🧦🧦
Thank you this was a very informative video.
True afterthought heels are when you cut your knitting to put in your heel. Forethought heels are when you put in a line of waste yarn into your knitting that will be cut to make room for the heel.
Thank you so much for that clarification!!! So sorry if I wasn’t clear enough when explaining that.
Thank you for this Video, I have never done after thought heel, I do the W&T, for my heels, can I still do that?
This setup works for me! Ta
Can the shadow wrap method be used for the heels?
Yes it can.
