Right now, I'm only rocking free vsts, but my favorite trick to lofi is to take an audio sample, warp it down to half the size, bounce out and stretch that thing back to it's original length, gives you a great sound that really compliments analog sounds or warble
I'm a big fan of free plugins, so I use Klanghelm's MJUC Jr a lot when I want some retro-style compression. Building your own RetroColour style Audio Effect Rack in Ableton is really fun too, as most of the individual effects can be achieved with stock plugins or free VSTs.

RC20 is amazing. I got the arturia mellow fi recently when it was free and I like the wow on that one more than anything I've tried. Deco is my fave hardware lofi tool.
This is not usually done in lo-fi, but I find that subtle micro-tunings based on our normal 12TET can also give sort of that saloon piano vibe to any sound, when combined with the right distortion etc. I HIIIIGHLY recommend ''Surge'', it's a free open-source FM synth that supports any tuning you'd want out of the box, it can make some nice bell/e-piano type sounds that lend themselves well to this. Hi Bad snacks, name is Ray (Floatwithme) a Dutch composer. I love your channel and glad I subscribed. You breathe music and runs trough your veins, we share intrests. Keep up that amazing work in all you do. Nothing more then respect. Cheers Ray :)
Thanks for your review! The Vulf Compressor is my favorite one. It works amazing on drum group. Also I use the Vinyl Strip by Audio Things to get some lo-fi vibe on my instruments. You can easily to change the age of vinyl record, add some dust or downgrade your sound.
"Cassette" by Wavesfactory is an absolutely superb tape emulation with tonnes of control (even has a control for how many times the cassette has been previously taped over!). Absolutely sounds like taping stuff off the radio as a teenager. I love it
Hey Bad Snacks! Just wanted to say I love your channel and find your demeanor super relatable compared to most production based channels. Looking forward to any new content & music you create 🙂
The piano loop keeps reminding me of Big O. Snacks starts a soundclip- Roger in my head: "One day, forty years ago, every person here lost all memory of anything which had occurred before that day. But humans are adaptable creatures. They make do and go on with life."
i started to lo-fi cause i find it easy to make jazz melody (the irony of it cause jazz tends to be on the advanced chord structures) And then using vinyl to see how chill it sounds lol Came here through youtube suggestions and very glad about knowing your channel!
Great video thank you. My personal go-to's would probably be the RC20, UADs ATR and Studer tape machines (I guess that's two but I am counting as one), Waves Abbey Road Vinyl (but the J37 is excellent), WavesFactory Cassette (this is awesome, similar to the Klevgrand), TAL DAC (a little secret squirrel but I use it on loads of tracks to get that 12bit drum sound a la SP1200 and MPC60) and an honourable mention for the D16 Decimort. It does crack me up that in the 80s, 90s and 00s I spent hours trying to get crappy recordings to sound great and now I spend hours making really great, clean recordings sound crappy. Thanks again.
Can somebody help when I use izotope vinyl in a music it crashes the music and it doesn't play audio. And when I remove izotope from effects the music plays again
I downloaded Izotope Vinyl a few weeks back and let me tell you, that plugin changed my life with lofi tracks. It's a very simple plugin that can add a huge amount of depth in your sounds, I would highly recommend it!
to ableton suite users: the m4l plugin "color" is a tape/vinyl emulator that is great. several types of "vinyl" to choose from, age settings, various wobble controls, a limiter, eq, and phaser.
Very helpful video! An idea for next time - maybe do a quick A/B of the dry/wet signal at times so we can hear how it is affected by the plugin? Regardless, I really enjoy your music. Keep it up!
Did you get the updated Izotope Vinyl? It got a major facelift, still free. Love RC-20. Also Sketch Cassette and Reels, both high-quality and affordable. But I highly recommend Decimort by d16 for bit crushing / saturation, Devastor as well for distortion. Anything by d16 imo is in the same league as RC-20.
The only problem I have with Izotope Vinyl is that the "wear" strips your low end and AFAIK there's no way to turn it off. If I'm using it on drums or bass to get that oldschool dub record feel, I have to use 2 sends w matching hi/lo passes, then use Vinyl on the high-passed send and mute the original track. Kind of a pain. Can't complain too much tho b/c it's free.
Been a fan every since my homeboy introduced me to you at a show you did in Hollywood. I use your tracks for my live streams and let as many people know about you as possible. Great to see you still doing your thang! Keep up the great work and can't wait for your next album. And J37 is MONEY!! I have that plugin and used it on almost every song I mixed after I got it. It's really great sounding. ✌️💀

Awesome thanks so much! Been really diggin the Vulf compressor, J37 & RC20 since you recommended them back in our April lessons, thank you again! Also having the Vulf compressor & RC-20 on XLN’s Addictive Drums makes for some really killer drum sounds..linking that up with a midi e-drum kit makes ya feel like you’re jamming in a time machine, very cool. Cheers!
Another good one for lofi mastering is Ferox. Its a free tape emulation plugin that just feels pretty nice. Theres also this free VHS effect that Reaktor has that seems pretty similar to that J37, just as a VHS sound instead of tape.
I know the Izotope Vinyl is free, but my go-to vinyl emulator is Klevgrand’s DAW LP, something about the presence and hiss seems really realistic. Love their DAW Cassette too.
The sad thing about Izotope Vinyl: All these years and still no darn randomization option. You should be able to have the pop and hiss appear more randomly instead of just looped.
