Florida is one of the only places on Earth where plants and animals from temperate forests mix with tropical ones, most places have deserts or mountains in the way. In some places in central Florida you can see orchids and mistletoe growing on the same tree. That’s why I love it so much.
I love it too! Florida is such a gem and the flora and fauna makes this place even more special! We are lucky to have such a unique environment and ecosystem in Florida! :)

He owns a tree service and is constantly finding wild orchids in felled trees, especially after a rigorous hurricane season. So thrilled to save these beautiful little guys - Epidendrum rigidum and Encyclia tampenis!
@OrchidsByBryan btw, my husband is finding these little beauties in the southeastern corner of Pasco County, a bit more north than the Everglades. That fact only gives me hope of their survival in the wild. 🤞

This was an adventure. I do my own swamp walks in the general area as well, looking for orchids. I have found plenty of Tampensis and Vanillas but I have never encountered Epidendrum nocturnum, Cyrtopodium punctatum, or the mule eared Trichocentrum orchid. It’s cool to know that they are still out there surviving.

I worked in the arctic. Not a plant growing more than a couple inches above the ground in many places. But there were willow trees spread across the ground that were probably a hundred years old. And there were orchids, I identified 3 unique orchids. Harsh winters but 24 hours of sunlight in the short but intense summer. It is amazing what is out there if one takes the time... I would love to visit Florida....

Your enthusiasm is what compelled me to comment. Most of the people I worked with on the slope were there for the money and saw little but a bleak wasteland around them. There were uncountable flowers in the summer, colorful, tiny, delicate looking but so hardy and thats just the one part of a thriving ecosystem that gets down to as cold as -50F for 9 months of darkness a year then explodes with life as the sun comes back. Much the same generally can be said about Florida or anywhere really, if you look and try to understand its mostly amazing. Live in the moment. Thanks for your reply.

Nice. I know a lot of locations in the everglades and mangroves that have native orchids. Brassia caudata, Vanilla dennisoniana, Vanilla barbellata, Cyrtipodium punctatum... They're great to see in the wild
Missing and most remarkable is the ghost orchid. The plant is little more than green worm like roots hiding in the bark with no leaves, but the flower is huge and spectacular. Where we found them there were so many even those not blooming at the moment could be easily noticed.
It’s true! I intentionally wanted to highlight the other wonderful and endangered orchids in South Florida! I hope to do a video about the Ghost Orchid in the near future! :) the ghost orchid is absolutely stunning!
I found them under short palm trees in partial shade or full shade! They like hydric hammocks (palm or fern forests) in Florida! National Park and National Preserve staff are very helpful in finding recent sightings especially in the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp! But it takes some exploring and “treasure hunting”! But so rewarding when you do come across the flowers!!! :)
Your pretty lucky with your Otter sighting. I have only seen 2 in 15 years, and 1 was in the canal behind my house. The other was near Noble Hammock (on road to flamingo). Between controlling some python populations somewhat and restoring water levels, they have comeback a bit in last few years.

Yes! The otter was a HUGE reward to our adventure! A very curious little fella that startled me more than an alligator! Haha :)
