I’m doing sustainable van life, I’m not traveling all over the place. I just refuse to pay somebody high rent or be subjected to being dependent on gas and electric companies with the punishing fees. Better quality of life when you know your money is not funding someone’s pockets and I get to save , invest and enjoy life so much more.
Hmmm, for the woman who said she wouldn't recommend van life for elderly people because they might have to go up on the roof or underneath the van sometimes . . . hahaha, my partner and I are 80 . . . we hike challenging terrain. We work out at a gym 3 times a week . . . so I'd like to challenge her statement . . . not all elderly people, are not created equally. I normally wouldn't post a challenge however I'm tired of elderly people being marginalized . . . believe me, there are more of us out there than you think . . .
I'm tired of presumptions based on age. U & ur partner "s fitness levels for ur age must be in the upper 3% of people raised in developed countries --Northern Hemisphere, Western world cultures with 9 to 5 sedentary jobs/professions where people no longer regularly engage in work that strengthens their physical bodies. On top of stresses and minimal natural light exposure. So we get to 60/65/70 yrs old and our bodies are SERIOUSLY depleted from the realities of our generally accepted, often very well-acknowledged & high "status" or socially rewarded or lauded positions and all of a sudden (or soit it seems, the never previously realized , slowly accumulating damage to internal organs, the saropenia muscle loss is so insidious and damaging...PLEASE TELL US...now what does a mid-70s female, former college & professional athlete; 70 hr per work week, pro bono, consumer protection, solo litigator...do now? WE ALL HATE being marginalized/invisiblized/dismissed by our very youth-oriented culture as do u folks but if 90% of us never had the opportunity to have both health-promoting employment/enuf time to commit to consistent aero and muscle-improvement and maintenance...what can we do to get (or return) to how we were when we could do what u can still do in ur 80s? Plz don't rail at being culturally presumed to be less than we are bcuz we ALL experience and feel pain at that but we definitely do NOT have the rare pleasure of being in ur physical condition in (or when we get to) ur age. Then what...??!
AND NEVER EVER ADD ur amusement "ha-ha's" to someone who expresses important REAL LIFE concerns that the VAST majority of elders will be or are affected by strength, agility, balance, far more than u & ur partner. And having a partner in all of this is a HUGE benefit; yet many elder women are embarking on this lifestyle alone. So ur response is "ha-ha...we can do it all" offers NOTHING but more messages of elders inequality, failures to be good as you.
I get what you are saying but I also understand what she was saying. I walk over an hour every day but at 73 after extensive back surgery it is really hard to get on a ladder or bend down to get to a black water connection under an RV. I just decided to get a small class b (after 2 class c’s) with very few bells and whistles that can break. Solar, laveo toilet and hopefully very few times I have to get up on the roof. Here’s hoping I can continue to enjoy the great outdoors for a few more years.
I appreciate every single person who donated their time and knowledge, very thankful I stumbled on this video! I feel bad for the gal who made the comment about elderly folks, I don’t think she meant it to be taken, or interpreted, as being rude, disrespectful or dismissive to a specific age group. In her experience she wouldn’t personally recommend it for everyone, just her opinion and I don’t quite understand why so many folks are hating on her for that, or bashing her personal views. Beyond that, thanks again for this video and information :)
I am a Building Engineer working in the heart of London. I am in the process of moving out of my apartment and into a Ford XLWB Transit. You better believe that I am looking forward to that liberty and freedom. There will be no electric, gas, water, council tax, or rent bills but will spend limited amount on the van.
For me, finding a place to rent/put the van was the key. I found a private driveway to rent for $200/mp. Next I found a van for $1;000. I did a no build with just the basics and six month later my set up is working for me. (I’ve never driven the van I only use it as a camper).
As I’m getting older and not able to work like I used to, a tiny home is definitely in my future. A small bus or large van could work. I see my stuff all around me in this rental and I get overwhelmed by just how much stuff I have. Much of it I use as far as furniture and clothing and candles etc. but I want to be able to live in a tiny home.
Here in bay area renting a room with shared bath is 900-1500 a month. An apartment is 1700-3000 for a one bedroom or studio. Save up an emergency fund for your maintenance. AAA. Rent a space say400-600 a month and gym etc is still about 800-1500 a month but it’s yours and ladies need to be extra safe.
Oh, I really, really like the people that you included in this video! Diverse opinions and perspectives, well put & non-judgemental. I totally agree with the gentleman that recommended building the van yourself so that you know every inch of it & know how to maintain it. Not the 1st time I’ve heard that, and makes so much sense. I also agree with the gentleman who isn’t interested in contributing to the wealth of already financially secure people. Canada’s housing shortage was avoidable and is shameful. Governments across our country have failed miserably. Loads of clues & forewarning ignored. Ugh🇨🇦
You’re much better off living van life where you can live comfortably than giving all of your money away just for rent & have no money left to buy groceries I love my van life
I think living in a van is doable for one person but personally I would definitely not want to live with another person . I must have my privacy. Also it is okay to live in a van if you have a high ceiling to actually stand comfortably. Oh and would have to be very clean and organized at all times. It could be very cozy too. Living in a van could save you lots and lots of money…No high rent fees to pay would be absolutely fantastic!!!!!!👍☮️
I hate to tell that one lady but van life is for older adults because we can’t afford rent!!!!!!!! Get a grip on how everyone is in need of housing now.
@@serenityjewel I’m disabled and do just fine. I recently seen a paraplegic from Canada living in a van. She was on cheaprvliving channel I believe it was a few months ago.
@@adventurebythemile I saw her too. She had a reasonably strong upper body to lift herself up, she had her van set up in a way that worked for her, and she asked strangers for help when she needed it. I’ve also seen other younger people in wheelchairs doing vanlife. I’ve also seen many older people, including people in their 80s, doing vanlife. That being said, I’ve also seen elderly people who could barely walk or pickup a folding chair who probably shouldn’t do vanlife. Everybody is different and what we struggle with is different. So again, as long as someone is in GOOD ENOUGH physical health to make it work, they can do vanlife.
Rent got outrageous so I've been doing this 26 months now..... because I'm forced to!!!!!! And I'm not physically able to work! These people show this whole van life as being glamorous! The hell it is!!!!!! Faaaar from it!!!!! ESPECIALLY during the winter!!!!!!
You need: Pee cup, need water, a bath bucket optional, need portable solar battery power bank, need some tools, need a either a portable battery charger or jumper, need sleep cushion, need portable air compressor for tires,
You need clothes, personal hygiene stuff, and a bed, which can be anything from blankets and a pillow on the floor to a frame, mattress, and sheets/sleeping bag. Everything else is optional.
Try to set aside an emergency fund. Also aaa. We also need help for people who need help fixing tires, and the rv or van to run and be movable so you don’t get towed away.
Good luck to you & your son. I hope that someday , somehow you can become more financially secure. It’s getting tougher & tougher. I hope that you both are at least in good health 🤞🙏🏻❤️🇨🇦

Great video. The best part that I love is the people who say they want to live free from capitalism but, they are actually living in the very best that capitalism has to offer. Absolutely hilarious non- critical thinking. I simply cannot stop laughing. Nonetheless, vanlife has awesome possibilities.
Not the best capitalism has to offer at all. Just because someone is using the tools that their society has built doesn’t mean they have to align morally with the means to create these things.
@@DiegoNorena_ whatever you have to tell yourself to feel better about actively using the products of capitalism and claiming at the same time that you don’t align with it morally. @ yeahs that’s true but for me personally I’d say the current state and scale of capitalism is the problem. Capitalism has its pros but sustainability is even better and I don’t think that they are mutually exclusive but we gotta get to a point where we can have both.
