steven cates What an American is right!! I remember by chance hearing his speech several years ago and wanted to listen again so here I am. I remember his speech so moving! God bless him and his recognition of this great country! The United States of America. May we continue to be blessed.
How wonderful to watch this. I am ever-honored to be related to this talented man (His sister, Josephine, who he mentions in his speech was my great grandmother). I absolutely love his advice, "Don't follow trends, start trends!" :-)
RonBeam and that is what someone told him when he was sick and discouraged and was quitting on life. And he got up and created Mr. Deeds after that. What a God given gift he had.
What a beautiful ceremony. Mr. Capra directed my favorite movie ever, "It's a Wonderful Life". I met Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu Bailey) in 2006 in Seneca Falls, New York. She was beautiful and charming. She spoke very highly of Mr. Capra and Mr. Stewart.
A very touching, deeply moving speech. A great man and a great artist, who always understood the human soul in all its aspects, in all its shades. His films are eternal on account of that, and on account of his superb command of the medium.
A real man who invested wisely in his God given talent, who understood the eternal dimension of our existence.Very early, he show the impact of his art,- to thousands of souls-, steady in his ideals, his films are pure light.Mr Carpa thank you for everything ,hopefully we meet in the light...a greek friend.
Mr. Frank Capra gave the most eloquent honest and touching speeches of an AFI award that I have ever heard. I love the advice where he says do not follow trends but start them start. His movies will move you and go on forever
Outstanding! I wrote down the key points of his speech for anyone who is interested. THE ART OF FRANK CAPRA is based on: “The Love of People” The 2 Ideals of “The Love of People” 1. The Freedom of Each Individual 2. The Equal Importance of Each Individual Words of Advice: • “Don’t Follow Trends, Start Trends” • “Don’t Compromise, Believe In Yourself Because Only The Valiant Can Create” • “Only The Daring Should Make Films” • “Only the Morally Courageous are Worthy of Speaking to Their Fellow Man for 2 Hours Into the Dark”
Oh My God. This Grandmaster of cinema ist STILL at it! I'm not an american, but he gets me crying just recalling his first sight of the statue of liberty and his fathers words. It's a scene done so often in movies - but here's the real thing. And it's moving to realize that it's STILL the real deal. Thank You, Frank Capra
All those actress, actor's and director's were the best of the best of the golden season of Hollywood. Very talented and classy people who never been see again.
How wonderful to watch this. I am honored to be related to such a talented man (his sister Josephine, who he mentions in his speech, was my great grandmother). I love his advice, "Don't follow trends, start them!" and "Believe in yourself." Wise words, indeed :-)
I so wish that Hollywood today would follow Capra's advice: "Don't follow trends!" How many superhero movies with robots, car chases and explosions with not so talented actors do we need?
This Is My Top 10 Capra Movies: 1. Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939) 2. Its a Wonderful Life (1946) 3. It Happened one Night (1934) 4. Mr Deeds Goes to Town (1936) 5. Submarine (1928) 6. You Cant Take it With You (1938) 7. Lady For a Day (1933) 8. That Certian Thing (1928) 9. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) 10. Lost Horizon (1937)
God bless you, Mr. Capra! What an amazing human with a huge heart! I love all of your work! Wise words, don't follow trends, make them! My favorite director ever! Much love to your family. I know you are missed! So thankful we still can enjoy your art!
Frank Capra, through his films, his life, and this speech, embodied everything it means to be an American: someone who came from humble origins, but who had the dream, the drive, and the ambition, and the honor, to do what was needed, in a free society where he would be able to do it. Legend.
Frank Capra was a unique filmmaker. Capra had the support of a Poverty Row Studio Columbia and together they made film History: It Happened One Night, Los Horizon, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, State of the Union, It's A Wonderful Life and with great stars: Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Ronald Colman, Claudette Colbert, James Stewart, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Jean Arthur magical stars!
Capra is acknowledged by the film industry to have been one of the greatest directors of the 1930's and 1940's, with a series of memorable films including Mr.Smith Goes To Washington, It Happened One Night, Lost Horizon and It's A Wonderful Life. Even his last film, the re-make of Lady For A Day entitled Pocketful Of Miracles with Bette Davis and Glenn Ford was charming and entertaining. Had his health not intervened, Capra would have presumably made additional films into the 60's.
Shame though, that his speech was as sincere a a contrite politician. Have you read Frankly. The Un-masking of Frank Capra by Joe McBride? A very different picture emerges of this supposed " man of the people".
Wow, if you didn't get choked up at the end of the at speech...you're a goddamn terrible American. That three minutes was like a Frank Capra movie all on their own.
It was a great speech, filled with a love of country, perhaps exemplified by what only an immigrant could feel. Capra praised his stars, great cameramen like Joseph Walker and editors like William Hornbeck. My only disappointment with the speech was his not mentioning Harry Cohn, the man who gave him his chance to make films the way HE wanted to make them. Yeah, I know, Cohn deserved his title of "His Crudeness." And, the two men had a falling out in 1939 with Capra counting the days when he could "escape" from Columbia Pictures. But without Cohn giving him a shot and giving him artistic freedom, Capra might have never won three directing Oscars and two Best Pictures. Again, great speech, but also a little disappointing, too.
Capra is my idol, his autobiography is an incredible read. What a fantastic career.
“ And for America, just for living here, I kiss the ground, thank you very much “
Tears😢
Tears in my eyes - what a speech - what a man - what an American!

What an incredibly beautiful speech and in stark contrast to Hollywood of 2017.
