RUclips Video: • 5 Gallon Bucket Aeropo...
Materials I used:
- (1) 5 gallon food grade bucket from Lowes - $4.97
- (1) 5 gallon bucket lid from Lowes - $2.18
- (1) 1/2″ X 12″ cut-off threaded poly riser - Less than $2
- (1) Tube to half inch adapter at Lowes - Less than $1
- (1) Male/Female 1/2'' coupling - Less than $1
- (1) 360 degree 1/2'' plastic head threaded sprinkler head - Less than $2
- (1) 158 gallon per hour water pump (EcoPlus 185) - $14-16 -- amzn.to/1LEiRsS
- (1) Electrical timer from The Goodwill - $6.99
- (7) 3'' net pots from local hydro store - $0.35 each. -- amzn.to/1T7oxO4 (These may differ from mine)
- (7) 3'' neoprene (foam) lids from local hydro store - $1 each.
That is a nice setup. I like the fact that your "reservoir" is actually the bucket itself rather than a big tub sitting off to the side with all the piping. This is a very nice setup for those who want to grow indoors or those with limited space, like on a balcony or porch. Thanks for sharing.
Simple system, it's wonderful to see how to the future unfolds all these new grow systems.
Cool video,,thanks mate
Marty Ware (Australian Micro Farmer)
I saw the same video, It was inspiring. I'm trying to get all the parts together now to build one, I can't wait.
I did this from exactly how you describe, I needed some extra tomato plants. This is hands down the best method that is down and dirty, nothing can even come close, thanks for the vid!
Glad it worked out!
These videos inspired me, I used a 1/2in cutoff riser, .17 cents, and a 360 full pattern shrub sprinkler, .88 cents for plumbing
Nice, I may have to try it out. Thanks for the upload.
Good video and some great tips as well as correct technical advice
PVC leeches nasty plasticisers into hydro systems
uPVC is safe..the small 'u' means 'unplasticised'...basically the raw form, hard and black.... before toxic chemicals are added to soften and colour it
It should be pointed out that pvc plumbing parts ARE perfectly food-safe. It's only during manufacture or incineration of pvc that harmful toxins are released. The finished product is fine for plumbing of drinking water and such in your home. You DO however want to run away from it if it's in a fire, so don't ever try to burn scrap pieces, or even most plastics for that matter anyway.
That's so funny… I was thinking the same thing if we drink water from PVC pipes. Why is it safe to plant with it?
@@kimberlyjones4112 Bro Science is rampant in the grow community.
I picked up a head for a garden sprayer it works great and only costs like five dollars sourced it at princess auto Got the 44 dollar pump.
Could you tell me about the adapter that goes on the top? I bought the same pump, and I am having a hard time finding it. Thank you!
great video. good information.
264 is 3/8
Ok,question
Regarding the fitting at pump and adapting to 1/2" pvc ,I am assuming the fitting that comes with the pump is removed, and a threaded fitting replaces it,so the 1/2" pvc drops into it..glue then up 12" to the spray head.
Ordering online parts isnt easy but better than rumaging thru a store for parts.
I'm also looking at the 264 pump to avoid this
Thanks and good luck cloners
Awesome video bro!
"I got a all my equipment from lowe's." - huge exhale and sigh. Hahaha
I have the 264 and it has a 1/2"
Excellent excellent!! Your video was 1000x better than the other one. Thank you!
What is the name of the single sprinkler or how did you find it / $ and what did you use to attach it to the pump? thanks
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!
Great tips! 💚🌱💚
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Very informative! BTW.... Thank you!
How much water do you put in the bucket? Does it matter?
love the video dude,...very personalized. However exact sprinkler head I should be using because there seems like there are many different types of spray patterns and degrees, also pop ups as well?
Its not a pop up one. Super generic, it was nothing special. The cloner was built 2 years ago so I'm not sure what they got in the store now. Sorry.
Q: this method works fine for seedling? , how often the timer should be used on seedlings, also 30 on - 30 off? Thanks!
I keep mines on 24 hours this actually a hybrid aeroponic setup n half dwc and aeroponics
thank you
Mmmmppppttttt 😂
But seriously this was a good Idea thank you for sharing.
Can you provide details on the sprinkler head? I'm using a lawn & garden head and it doesn't seem to get all my 6 sites wet. To test it, I put a little piece of toilet paper in each net pot. 2 of 6 got soaked, the other 4 were barely moist. Not sure why it's not hitting all 6. Thank you
+DrDangerPuppy The only details I know is what I put in the description. It has a green disk type of head, wider than the diameter of a quarter. Hope that helps.
Great Thanks
also i would suggest getting a darker color lid white might possibly promote algae growth
George Jung I actually did just that. In my newer videos you'll see my new black lid with 21 clone sites.
Awesome!! looks good tho. gonna build myself one next week thanks for taking the time out to show us your version .
What keeps the roots from tangling.?? ..I did this n had to tear roots to get them separate...
I usually move them to pots once roots show so they never get long enough to get tangled.
What is a polyriser
What's the benefits of using a cloning machine such as this one compared to using vermiculite, a dome, a plastic tray, and separate plastic pod trays inside the big tray? The vermiculite setup doesn't require a pump and is all readily available at a hydro store or even a regular store. I've gotten roots as early as 8 days with that setup. I love the setup mentioned in the video but I think I'd use it more so for growing plants with nutrient solution and to not clone with. Help me out here.
I personally like this method of cloning because you can always see the bottom of the stem and frequently check whether or not you have roots. If the stem is always underground, its hard to know when/if you have roots or not. That's just me though. If you're successful with other methods then that's awesome!
Thanks for replying.
Thanks for replying to his Reply!
does the water hit the cuttings pretty hard or is it a pretty thin mist?
Doesn't hit them hard, it's pretty gentle. But it's definitely not a thin mist.
what type of plant did you have in your setup at the time of filming? looks like some kind of mint
Catnip
how dank was the aeroponic catnip?
The cat approved
Does the stem of the clones needs to be sumerge under the water?
+daniel Lamb Nope. Just sprinkled by the sprinkler.
Thank you! I am making one :)
Can I buy 4 black 5 gallon bucket lids with a 2 1/4 inch hole in the center of each sir? I'll pay $20.
Google 5 gal bucket lids and a damn hole saw drill bit. Sheesh
Instead of using a water pump could I use an air pump with a large air stone? The clones would be sprayed with water each time a new bubble bursts
Yeah you can. I had a smaller setup where I did that and it worked fairly well.
I have an air stone that I purchased for an hydroponic setup, but I like this setup better.
Q: I can take the plant to harvest provided that I add nutrient solution every 3 Weeks. I live in zone 8b and the summers get pretty hot. Where should I store my setup so it doesn’t get too hot? Inside the house or can I setup on my screened porch with a fan? Please advise.
You would need to keep on top of feeds much more often than 3 weeks if you were taking a plant further than clones, you'd have to stay on top of PH, EC Water temp etc etc. Also when the roots get extremely big they would no doubt block the sprinkler, if you really want to grow full size plants in this by far the best set up would be an air stone as a normal DWC. Could even clone with the aero like this then switch to air stone DWC when they've rooted.
can I make one just to grow a (1) plant from start to finish?
No this is for starting roots on clones, only use water no nutrients besides clonex or similar
Yes you can use this 5 gallon bucket method to grow a plant and harvest it all from the bucket. All you need to grow the plants in the bucket is proper liquid plant food for Aeroponic plant system as well as liquid solutions to adjust the PH of the water up or down. Then mix the nutrients into the water around once a week and drain the water and replace the water about every 2 to 3 weeks . You will need to test the PH of the water daily to make sure you are keeping it in the optimal growing range. Most of the time buckets are used as cloners and Big plastic totes are used the Aeroponic growing after that but either can work fine. If you are going to use the bucket for more than cloning you will want to devise a way to drain the water without removing the lid and plants everytime. I would recommend looking up other DIY Aeroponic videos to see more of the process of how to care for the plants.
Garden Pool has a LOT of good vids/info.
where did you get sprinkler head
+Snuffy Dawg I got it at Lowes.
Cutting a hole with a holesaw is impossible. Reversing the drill is the only way to produce a smooth cut.
does the water recycle itself?
Lol maybe he's new to all this shit like me. Does it? I only saw the first 10 seconds of the video and now I'm in the comments section looking for "Extra" helpful comments before I actually watch the video. In order for it to recycle itself it needs a Water Pump going from the Rez to the top of the Growing medium right xD? *Just started learning about this stuff a few days ago.
Whats wrong with not using food grade is it the bpa?
+Mo I've actually heard people say it doesn't matter. But it's what the guy who made this build advised as well as a dude from a local hydroponic store insisted on, so I just wanted to play it safe.
+PhilanthroPwn Nice thanks for the quick reply!
you just don't want unnecessary things leeching into you're water... better safe than sorry
what it easy to scratch from the paint?
Yeah, super easy. I didn't use primer or anything so the paint would chip a lot.
sucks that they only have clear plastic
where did you buy the pump?
The pump and net pots came from Lowes too?
Kathie Bishop I got it at a local hydroponic store. I put a link in the description where you can get it on Amazon.
ToKeNhI The net pots came from a local hydroponic store as well.
Lol lucky! My stupid fucking City (in Texas) only has ONE Hydroponics store nearby. It supposedly has had over 3 more not too far but they're all "Permanently Closed" I hope this last one doesn't close. Even though I'll most likely order everything by Amazon (To avoid possibly looking like a fucking moron at the local store lol.) I'd still like for that place to stay open in case of any "Emergency Buys/Replacements" happen.
This a hybrid aeroponic system
Check out a device called the dewey mister it's cheaper and more effective than what your doing here. It will save you a lot of time and money. And it works great. Good video though
dewy mister is way more expensive, doesnt work as well, this method is far superior you run it 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off total cost for me was only 26$ for the pump, sprinkler, bucket, lid, net pots, foam, and clay pebbles. your house will be air conditioned so who cares about it warming water dissipates the heat so fast if you have a/c in your house it wont matter. i only use mine in the winter to grow and in the summer just to clone. move backwards and use the dewey system if you want to go through evolution up to this cloner/hydro machine. i would bet money your selling dewey kits cause they suck and are definitely more expensive i only see $9 for each dewey device thats a terrible price.
What kind of nutrients for this?
+Andrew Stang-Green Just tap water. I just wait for roots then stick em' in dirt. I never go to harvest in the cloner.
Is there no special solution the roots need?
+Andrew Stang-Green The cuttings have no roots. Therefore no nutrient.
Can someone explain the whole "clone" thing?
Say you have a really nice basil plant that produces a lot; Take a cutting (about 4 inches) of new growth, put it in an aeroponic system and when it gets roots, you have yourself a "Clone" of the "mother" that you can plant and get more awesome basil with the same attributes :) More predictable than pollination which is basically a random mix of mother (flower) and father (pollen) genetics.
Do you need food grade buckets? No, just make sure they are BPA-free which most are now days.
Can you grow a plant from start to finish? Yes but you will need to add nutrients once the plant starts growing.
The one main thing I will disagree with the guy in the video you refer to is that if you clone using soil you must keep the soil dry and only mist the leaves. I do it all the time in solo cups and it only takes about 2 weeks before the clone is ready to plant. Just stick the cutting into the soil and water. Check every few days and water as necessary. You do not want to mist the leave of tomato plants as this can lead to fungus growth on the plant.
Using plain tap water is fine for cloning but it helps to get the PH in the 5.8 to 6.8 range first. Most tap water is in or near the 8.X range.
Since I am moving to 99% hydroponics I will be moving to using a cloning method similar to this.
Also the water temperature should stay between 65 and 80 degrees F for best result in growing.
so yea.
do not use a drill in reverse to cut holes..just get a bit with finer teeth. it's cheaper than replacing the drill.
not hating, just thought ide mention it so people don't burn out there drills if they're making a lot of holes.
A good drill wont burn out
a cheap tripod will improve your quality
***** Thanks for the advice. I will consider it. I like to show things quickly from different angles.
you need air to lift the nute soln', not a pump. Look into dewey mister design. air wont change the temp of solution like a pump will.
Lol so at no point do you even show how you set it up instead of pvc? Waste of a perfectly good 5 min.
