The history of Iraq/India/east Africa/north Africa/levant was connected long long before Islam. They had trade and the influences were clear from ancient Indus valey to ancient Sebaa' (Yemen) .. The earliest depiction of an oud was in a ancient Iraqi relief from about 1800 BC then Egyptian from around 1400 BC. That does not mean though that it couldn't be influenced by the east at these ancient times.
